From the President

Happy Independence Day from Jen and me. We are

235 years into this little social experiment of ours. Despite the best efforts of our enemies and a great many of our elected officials, we are still plugging along. It’s great to be an American! If you haven’t been to an Appleseed event, please do so. It’s a very unique opportunity to get in touch with our heritage. June was a really rough month as I spent all but 3 days away on assignment. The good news is that Jen and I were able to celebrate her birthday (I won’t say which one) together in Orlando at our favorite restaurant, The Ravenous Pig in Winter Park. I have provided a couple of pictures to add some spice to my column. Both are of the Airport Traffic Control Tower at the Orlando International Airport taken from mid-field. Next AAF&G “Gun School” This Month

Calling all provisional members! If you’ve been working on getting your provisional card signed with your 3 shooting activities, here’s the last piece you need before you request full membership at the end of your six

month provisional period. Rather than reinventing the wheel, we use the NRA’s Home Firearm Safety Course. For experienced shooters this course gave seasoned shooters an opportunity to get reacquainted with different actions. For an inexperienced shooter or a single discipline shooter, it’s a chance to handle other kinds of guns. The course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and explains the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. Details: (from the NRA course description)This is a four-hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. Students are taught NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning; care; safe storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports. Students will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, course completion certificate. The course and the materials are at no cost to our provisional members. Other members are welcome to attend for $25. This course is scheduled for Sunday, July 24th at 1 pm in the club house. Pre-registration is required. Please email Meg at [email protected] to save a place.

We had a shoot on June 18th for the Wounded Warrior organization on the Nancy B. Eccles Memorial Rifle Range. This event was organized by Brian swift, William J. Palk, and J. Andrew McKinney. In addition, steve Allen and Greg Nolte rounded out the event with their expert assistance. A special thanks to the volunteers and to Andy for generously providing the ammo. Jen and I provided for the catering from Red Hot & Blue for the shooters, families, and AAF&G volunteers. We continue to make progress with the Trap field and as you read this should be at permit submittal. We suffered a minor setback in schedule as the tornadoes in Alabama all but destroyed the office of the engineer used by the net manufacturer. I realize that this is a short column for me, but chalk it up to a quiet summer. Stay safe and I hope to see you all on the ranges and at meetings.

The Junior Rifle Program starts at 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. every Sunday. The team members practice each

Sunday from 10:30 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. The Junior Rifle Orientation Classes for July 10, August 14 and October 2 are full. At this time, I’m not taking any more students for the program. Please contact me next April, 2012, to see if I have the space to add other students. My email address is [email protected]. The AAF&G Junior Rifle team shot in the Annual “Libby” match on June 11, 2011. The team members Nathan Moy, Zackery Anna, Michael Kurtis and Courtney Cowger each shot 160 shots in the prone position. This year they changed the match to be sanctioned so the shooters could add to their NRA Classification. Congratulations to our team for taking 1st Place with a 6214 out of 6400. Nathan Moy took first place junior with a 1589-14 and Michael Kurtis took second place junior with a 1585-82. Zackery Anna took second place Intermediate Junior with a 1542-47 and Courtney Cowger took first place Sub-Junior with a 1498-31. All received individual plaques and a team plaque which is always presented to the Coaches. Thanks Brad and Randy. Remember the Friends of the NRA banquet will take place on October 1, 2011. Our AAF&G Jr. Rifle Program has been fortunate to receive six grants from the NRA Foundation. The NRA Foundation supports Youth Shooting. Have Fun Shooting & Remember —Youth are our Future!

Building a Folding Target Frame for the Plinking and High Power Range

Here are the instructions for building a target frame that will last a long time and insure you have something to shoot at when you get to the range. I

have built hundreds of different types of folding frames and this one has worked the best. It is simple, sturdy and only takes about an hour to make.

Here is the list of materials needed to build it. You will need a total of 18.5 feet of #2 premium pine 1"x 2". These are sold in 8 and 10 foot lengths at Home Depot for $2.45 per foot. I use the premium pine instead of furring strips as they hold up better and are straighter. If you need to see more detail of the assembled frame, just zoom in on your computer. The dimensions of the cut pieces needed to assemble the frame are as follows.

2 pieces 33" long 1 piece 18" long 2 pieces 40" long 1 piece 21" long 2 pieces 19 1/2" long

Hardware: 4 carriage bolts size ¼" x 21/4"– $.17 each2 cut washers ¼"– $.11 each4 Wing nuts ¼"–$.98 per bag of fourBox of 3/8" wood joiners–$1.55 for a box of 158 #8 Construction or Deck screws 2 Inch–$1.94 box of 204 #8 Construction or Deck screws 1 Inch–$1.94 box of 20 Basically you will be building two squared off U shaped sections. When completed, the lower section will fold into the upper section. When extended, locking bolts will be inserted to hold the frame up when the wind is blowing. Some assembly notes are as follows: In addition to screws, add wood glue and wood joiners to each joint. This will make stronger joints and your frame will last longer. To prevent cracking, drill pilot holes before inserting screws. Start by assembling the two 40 inch pieces and one of the 19 1/2" pieces into a U. After you make this, measure 27" from the top of the frame and secure the 21" piece across the two legs. This is the lower limit of your cardboard backer. About two inches in from the side, drill two 1/4" holes to store the locking bolts. (Reference picture 1, 2 and 3) Next, assemble the two 33" pieces and the other 19 1/2" piece into another U. Once this is finished, measure six inches up from the lower part of the legs and install your 18" piece. This piece will support the lower legs. (Reference picture 1, 4 and 5)

The NRA Basic Pistol Course that was completed on Saturday, June 25th was another success for AAF&G.

Of the eight students, 4 were provisional members looking to document a demonstration of safe shooting pistols, 1 was an AAF&G board member and experienced shooter getting easy documentation of qualified training for a Florida carry permit and 3 were slightly experienced or novice shooters looking to learn about pistols and how to shoot safely. All of the new people are solidly interested in membership after their class experience. The class was composed of 5 men and 3 women with one husband /wife duo. Ages ranged from 35 to 74 with half under 45 and the other half over 60. Two students traveled from Bowie, one from Crofton and one from Pasadena with the rest from Annapolis zip codes. Surprisingly, with a class this size, we had one left handed shooter and 2 cross eye dominant shooters (left eye dominant but right handed). Using a patch over the left eye worked for the novice shooter and the jury is still out on the results for the more experienced shooter. At least now he knows why his shots are sometimes inconsistent. The evaluation forms show “range time” as the most beneficial part of the course followed by cleaning and safety.

This time we shot as just one relay on the Plinking Range so we had it tied up until 11:15. Fortunately, we were leaving the range as the first members were arriving to do some serious Saturday plinking. Thank yous go to steve Love and the IDPA shooters. Steve assembled and positioned the targets for the practical exercise and then returned the sticks to the IDPA program. He also put his RSO credentials to extra use by distributing ammo and coaching the students. Brad Quintal fixed the dinner on Tuesday evening and shared some of his knowledge of semi automatic pistols with the students. We put his RSO creds to good use as well on Saturday with coaching and ammo passing. My personal favorite gun cleaning demonstrator, Brooks Wuerdemann, had the students elbow deep in cleaning the guns they shot. He also showed them alternative techniques and products available today. (Not everyone thinks of Hoppes cleaner as perfume.) We also used Brooks and his RSO status on the firing line. With vacations and the other usual summer activities we won’t have another NRA Basic Pistol Course until the fall. The next course is scheduled for September 20, 22 and 24. Watch the SCORE for details.

Meg Clarke

the upper frame. (Reference picture 6). Now, insert one 1 inch screw above and below the two bolt holes on each leg. This will prevent cracking when the wind is blowing and putting pressure on the upper frame against the locking bolt. (Reference picture 6) Now insert one stove bolt from the outside in on the top, through the bottom, add a washer and a thumb screw. Do this on both sides and you are finished. (Reference picture 6). If you take a 10 inch piece of wood and section it diagonally, you will have a set of wedges to jam the leg against the PVC pipe in the ground making it more resistant to moving in the wind. (Reference picture 7) Now you have a frame that will give you many hours of enjoyable service. When you shoot holes in the wood frame of the upper half (and you will) it is easy to just measure off a new

piece, unscrew the old piece and insert the new.

Have fun and shoot safely.

John Michelli

Now, take the top part of the frame and drill two 1/4 inch holes 2 inches up from the bottom of the legs. This hole will be your pivot hole. Next, measure one inch down from the first hole and drill a second hole. This will be your locking bolt hole. (Reference picture 6) Now lay the upper frame on the floor and place the lower frame inside the lower legs approximately 3 1/2 inches. Now you are going to drill through the upper leg holes into the lower leg holes. When you are finished, you will have two holes on each side of the upper and lower frame halves. NOTE: When drilling these holes, it is important to insure that both sides are aligned on the same plane. If not, the lower frame will not fold properly into

YOu MIGHT BE A GuN NuT……

- If you know the range of every tree in the neighborhood.

- If you plead with the gun shop to hold a rifle/shotgun

until you have space for it.

- If your girlfriend/wife is jealous of the time you spend

with your guns.

- If you ever accidentally seasoned a steak with FFFFg

black powder.

- If you own a guns you haven’t shot yet .

- If you carry concealed at the beach.

- If you name your kids after your guns.

Watch for more next month!

HIGH POWER RIFLE sHOOTING MATCHEs

The June AR15 Match on June 4th had a nice turnout of 10 competitors. Once again John M. improved his score over that of the past few months. However, it appears that David H., Mike K., and Andy M. are in a position to take the lead away at some future match. Watch this space next month to see who can edge out the top gun and win the July match!

The June Vintage Rifle Match on June 11th, however, had 18 competitors and eight pretty full relays. Roy H. regains his position as high scorer but with a 97/4x, using his M1 Garand, but it looks like Ray A., Jr (relays 1 & 4) and younger brother Steve A. (relays 2 & 5) might be gaining ground, so again watch this space next month to see who comes out on top.
