the start of the race Parts of the hare theme and tortoise theme are
heard together Played quickly with a plodding bass (the tortoise?) Pedal bass used (held on bass note) at times Hare theme heard in a rising figure passed around
the instruments and changing key Hare theme appears fragmented at the end and

counter melody above Tortoise theme becomes more optimistic and is
transformed into a major key Trumpet fanfare figure heard quietly (victory on
its way?)

Timp crescendo as the hare realises what has happened (angry?)
Chromatic rising figure as hare jumps to his feet
Repeated motif from hare theme is heard then dies away.

Part 9 - Conclusion
Music returns to opening pastoral scene Calm ending this time without the hare theme
interrupting the calmness.
