Part 5 – Race starts and tortoise gets left behind A snare drum roll and chromatic rising scale signals

the start of the race Parts of the hare theme and tortoise theme are

heard together Played quickly with a plodding bass (the tortoise?) Pedal bass used (held on bass note) at times Hare theme heard in a rising figure passed around

the instruments and changing key Hare theme appears fragmented at the end and

Part 6 – Hare lies down and goes to sleep Music slows down in a descending chromatic

pattern Low, sustained bassoon note and quiet

cymbal represent sleep Pastoral theme from the beginning gives a

peaceful atmosphere and provide a contrast to the busy race music.

Part 7 - Tortoise catches up, overtakes hare and wins race. Tortoise theme heard in bass instruments with

counter melody above Tortoise theme becomes more optimistic and is

transformed into a major key Trumpet fanfare figure heard quietly (victory on

its way?)

Part 8 – Hare wakes up!

Hare theme is anticipated with glockenspiel note (waking up?)

Timp crescendo as the hare realises what has happened (angry?)

Chromatic rising figure as hare jumps to his feet

Repeated motif from hare theme is heard then dies away.

Part 9 - Conclusion

Music returns to opening pastoral scene Calm ending this time without the hare theme

interrupting the calmness.
