Welcome to join the dog familyYears make people old. The New Year has begun. Bamboo just
became the Hash weekly newspaper editor-in-chief, and his doodling has made people burst into laughter. In the first issue of the New Year, our newspaper publication name created by our forerunners has not only been changed to “Hash Trash,” but also specifically provides that “no copyright and free reproduction.” The front-page headline was “Taipei Hash Has Got One More Dog.” Let’s congratulate the former Grand Master Aqua who handed down the baton in 2009 to join our dog team.
The slang “former Grand Masters are as many as dogs” has been popular in Taipei Hash for over a year. It sounds just perfect in the locals’ ears, but our foreigner friends may have totally different feelings. I once saw locals making a great deal of effort to explain this slang to a foreigner in English. That foreigner just winked and shrugged. I am not sure whether he really understood or not. Perhaps he had some questions in mind: Are there more people or dogs in Taiwan? Also, every week in Taipei Hash’s pursuit game, aren’t there more than 200 dogs chasing a hare? There are indeed a lot a dogs, and in terms of role-playing, isn’t everyone a dog? Is the slang “former Grand Masters are as many as dogs” applicable on Taiwan or Taiwan Hash? Perhaps neither of them is applicable.
The subject of dogs originated in 10/25/2008 on the way to Puli in Central Taiwan when we were about to participate in our Special Run. Those who sat at the last rows chatted about former Grand Masters. It happened to be that 5 to 6 former Grand Masters were sitting in the rear of the tourist bus. On In was inspired to create such a dictum as “former Grand Masters are as many as dogs” that can be spread out all over the world and lauded to generations to come.
As to dogs' status, the traditional Eastern civilization and Western civilization are having significant differences. Western civilization regards dogs as loyal and noble friends of humanity. In contrast, dogs’ status is not only low in the East, but also inferring degradation. For example, someone who does bad things for villains are called “walking dogs” in Chinese (“lackeys” in English); talking nonsense is called “breaking the dog’s wind” in Chinese (“utter rubbish” in English); bad articles are called “obstructed gas of dogs” in Chinese (“making little sense” in English); those who win the lottery are known as having good dog luck ........... Such examples are way too many to give. Not being thrown into dog meat pots for winter dietary supplementation is fortunate enough. Therefore, the reason why the dictum “former Grand Masters are as many as dogs” is well liked and accepted is because its true-to-life flavor. It represents the 37 years of Tapai Hash’s historical heritage: taking place on schedule regardless of weather changes. Also, it represents all the unpaid
hard-working former Grand Masters who humbly stepped down and returned to an ordinary identity after fulfilling their one-year term of service and gave new Grand Masters the stage to play their roles. After former Grand Masters stepped down, new Grand Masters would give out orders, and host Down Down. When members are upset, they fuss with the new Grand Master in stead, leaving only a long list of former Grand Masters who were in service in particular years to be recorded on a journal which is issued once every two years.
I wish Taipei Hash long live, long live, long long live and welcome to the thousands of new dogs to join our dogs’ clan.
