Good afternoon and welcome to today’s match in the 2018 Currie Cup, proudly brought to you by Nashua and DirectAxis. The Currie Cup is one of the oldest competitions in world rugby, and we are delighted that the rich history, tradition and passion associated with the competition and the famous gold trophy still remain, since the tournament’s inception in 1891. We know that all the teams involved will give everything they have, in the name of their team-mates and their provinces, and for all of the players, featuring in the Currie Cup always is a memorable occasion. Holding aloft the Currie Cup remains one of the biggest honours and achievements for teams in South African rugby, and we are excited to see the participating sides stake a claim for a place in the final stages in attempt to reach this feat. This year every game will be vital as the competition has been revamped to feature an action-packed single round, meaning every point will count. Adding to the excitement for die-hard fans, the fixture list includes three Saturday triple-headers, something we have not had for many years. And as has always been the case, we can look forward to a new generation of player emerging from the Currie Cup – guys who will stake a claim at Vodacom Super Rugby level and later for the Springboks, where they will do our country proud.
I would like to wish both sides in action today the best of luck for the match, and for the rest of the competition. I have no doubt that they will deliver a high standard of rugby. A special thanks also to the provincial unions for all your hard work to ensure that your teams are well equipped to do their best on the field and for your contribution to keeping South African rugby fresh and exciting. Thanks to the fans who have come to the stadium to support these teams. You are not only showing your support for them, but for the Currie Cup and South African rugby, and for that we are very grateful. Your support will assist us in ensuring that the Currie Cup remains steeped in history as one of the greatest competitions in the world, and one that your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will be passionate about for many years to come. It is an honour for me to welcome everyone to tonight’s Currie Cup promotion-relegation match in in Toyota Stadium.
The Toyota Cheetahs are looking forward tonight’s game and the game on the Guinness PRO 14 match against Munster on Sunday.
The possibility of the Currie Cup and Guinness PRO14 not clashing in the future offers great prospects for the Toyota Cheetahs. It will allow the Toyota Cheetahs the opportunity to put a champion team on the field again.
Free State Rugby looks forward to the unique opportunity and an exciting challenge. The goal is to warm the Cheetah supporters’ hearts with free flowing open rugby that the Toyota Cheetahs are known for.

Welcome to today’s Currie Cup match at the Toyota Stadium.
The Toyota Free State Cheetahs have a very proud, rich and successful history in the oldest domestic rugby competition in the world.
During the Super Sport Rugby Challenge, Daan Human and his technical staff did some remarkable work to lead the Toyota Free State XV all the way to the semi-finals of the competition, and in the process unearthed some promising talent. This has given Franco Smith a fantastic platform to launch the Currie Cup campaign and the Toyota Free State Cheetahs will no doubt hit the ground running.
The Toyota Free State Cheetahs welcome many new players to their ranks, and this brings a good mix of experience, youth and flair.
To Franco Smith, the rest of the coaching staff and the team, we stand alongside you and look forward to writing the next chapter of proudly Toyota Free State Cheetahs rugby with you. We know that the “never say die” attitude will be on display again this season and that you and the players will make everyone proud.
