The Pioneers are ranked 7th in total defense (373.3 ypg), 5th in passing defense (217.0 ypg) and 8th in rushing defense (156.3 ypg). All-American running back Tanner Clark is 3rd in the OAC in rushing averaging 112.3 ypg rushing and is tied for 2nd with 9 rushing TDs. RECORD SETTING: Senior wide receiver Andrew Barker has already broken the school record for career TD receptions. Entering the season, the old mark was 19 shared by Antonio Hutton (1994-97) and Jason Curry (2003-06). Barker broke the record with his 20th career TD reception in Marietta’s Homecoming loss to Heidelberg. He currently has 22 career TDs. With 8 TD catches this season, Barker needs one more to break the school single season record currently held by Hutton (1997) and Curry (2006).
NATIONAL LEADER: Junior defensive back Tay Pryor is ranked 5th in NCAA Division III with 2.1 passes defended per game. Senior quarterback Kyle McSweeney ranks 22nd nationally with 19 TD passes. Senior running back Tanner Clark ranks 19th nationally with 9 rushing TDs and is 23rd averaging 112.3 ypg rushing.
HOLD ON TO THE BALL: Marietta College is ranked 4th in NCAA Division III lead with 1 fumble lost this season. The Pioneers have put the ball on the ground nine times through the first seven games and lost possession for the first time last week against John Carroll.
SENIORS HONORING CLASSMATE JOEL WUNNENBERG: The six seniors on
this year’s team will alternate wearing jersey #38 to honor Joel Wunnenberg, a classmate who passed away unexpectedly in March of 2017. Wunnenberg was a linebacker and running back from Springdale, Pa. He was majoring in Petroleum Engineering at Marietta College. TJ West wore the #38 jersey in the season-opener at Hiram and Tanner Clark rushed for 214 yards and 3 TDs in #38 when the Pioneers beat Muskingum, 31-25. Quarterback Kyle McSweeney passed for a school record 440 yards wearing #38 against Heidelberg at Homecoming and wide receiver Andrew Barker had 3 receptions for 72 yards and a TD in #38 last week against John Carroll. Defensive back James Knox will wear it against Otterbein and wide receiver Ryan VanMeter will in the season finale against Mount Union.
