What Should a Management Tool Do?
• Long term goal -- manage 80% of Purdue computers in some capacity; 80% = 20,972 computers
• Begin with Windows platform• Features needed:
– Disk imaging– Inventory – Secure -- patch OS, deliver A-V and A-SpyWare– Deliver software – shared software images in the enterprise– Multi-platform – Win/Mac/Unix/Linux– Decentralized administration for departmental control
• Create a minimal baseline image – preloaded – for maximum compatibility across the enterprise
What We Need To Do
• Identify essential requirements– Short web survey to compile requirements and needs
in each of our areas
• Review and narrow vendors to those that meet our requirements
• Create an RFP and bring vendors in for demos (whole group to attend + others)
• Pick a vendor and acquire tool• Begin incremental roll-outs in various areas
around campus
