Of all gifts, the gift of a lamp during the month of Kartik is the best. No gift is its equal." The Pushkar Puran states, "The person who lights the lamp of sesame (til) oil in the name of Lord Shri Hari in the month of Kartik (during Sandhya) gets unlimited prosperity, beauty, blessedness and wealth."

Temple will be brilliantly glowing with decoration of more than a thousand oil lamps! Temples would light a Deepam and would bring the large deepam to the top of the Dhwaja Sthambam Pole and tie it there on Karthika Pournami. This deepam is called as Akasa Deepam and Vishnu Deepam is observed on the full moon day in month of Karthika Masam. It is observed by lighting a bonfire based on the legend of Thrivikrama (Vamana Avatar) of Lord Vishnu.
Deepothsavam is celebrated with many names such as Pancharatra Deepam (SV Lotus temple follows pancha-ratra agama and will be celebrating as such), Karthika Deepam on Pournami with Kruthika Nakshatra(Star) in the constellation. On this day many temples in south india celebrate by burning dry palm leaves (popularly known as Sokkapanai). It is believed that Sri Mahavishnu on this day presses his feet on Mahabali sending him physically lower but lifting Mahabali's soul upwards for the promise he kept up. Most people in southern parts of India celebrate this festival by lighting lamps usually made of clay all around their house and do special pooja at home with varieties of Deepam offered to the Lord. People also offer Pori or Moorilu or Bongulu or Borugulu as it is called with shapes of cone etc. In karnataka many celebrate this festival as 'Ane habba' or elephant festival by gifting silver elephants to daughters of the house.
At SVLT, the Temple will be brilliantly glowing with decoration of more than a thousand oil lamps!
The legend associated with Vishnu Deepam is an interpretation of Lord Vamana asking three steps of land from King Bali. Here instead of land it is based on the movement of sun and earth. It is said that the two steps of Lord Vamana are the Uttarayan and vernal equinox. And the third step which sends Bali to the underworld is the autumn equinox and the bonfire lit on Vishnu Deepam remembers this evening.
