Hello!

My name is Rhonda Knight

I teach students how to nurse

I was a nurse caring for older people


I am learning myself

I am doing my Doctor of

Philosophy (PhD) at the

University of the West of

England in Bristol


• when you are eating and drinking

• what helps you to eat

• what you find difficult

I want to hear your stories about


I want to be sure that you are happy to talk

to me.

I will ask you if it is OK to talk to you

You do not have to agree to talk to me


When you are deciding if you want to tell me your story

You can have a friend or relative with you

You can talk to them when I am not there


If you do decide to talk to me

I would like to film you telling me your decision using a video camera


You can change your mind

You will still get the help you need

even if you decide not to speak to me

You can decide not to

talk to me even after agreeing to

help me

You do not have to tell me why you do not want to speak to me


When you are telling me your story

It might take an hour for me to

listen to your story


To help me remember what you say

I will film you telling me your

story with a video camera


If you want to stop filming you when you are talking

You can ask me to stop filming

whenever you want


Confidentiality

The videotape and writing will not have your name on itI will not tell anyone your name or where you live


The films and writing will be stored safely

• in a locked filing cabinet in my office

• on my computer in my office


After talking to me

• I will look at the film• I will write down what you

have told me about when you are eating and drinking

• I will compare what you have said with other people who have told me their story

Telling other people at meetings

• I would like to tell people what I have learnt from you at meetings

• I would like to show some of the film when you are talking to me

• This would only happen if you agree to it


Writing in journals

I would like to tell people what I have learnt by writing in journals

This will only happen if you agree to it

Your picture will not be shown but I will write what you have told me

I will not say who you are or where you live


If you agree to talk to me

I will see you four times

Visit 1: I will come and meet you

Visit 2: You will tell me if you are happy to talk to me. I will film your decision

Visit 3: You will tell me your story about eating and drinking

Visit 4: I will tell you what I have learnt from listening to everyone. I would like to hear what you think about what I have learnt.
