Coo1act FREDERICK M. HERRMANN. Ph. D~~ Release: IMMEDIATELY Executive Director May 21, 1987 (609) 292-8700
State Senate and Assembly candidates in the 1987 June primary have raised
$1,460,132 and spent $574,772 on their campaigns through May 8, 1987, according
to figures released by the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission.
In a statement made today, Frederick M. Herrmann, Executive Director of the
Commission, said that the 29-day preelection reports indicate that candidates
for the State Senate raised 52 percent of the total funds collected by all
legislative candidates, or $755,346. He also said that 51 percent of the
expenditures made by such candidates, or $297,382, were attributed to Senate
candidates.
Herrmann said that Assembly candidates raised $704,786 and spent $277,390.
The first figure represents a 29 percent increase in contributions over 1985.
There was a 22 percent increase in expenditures from that year. Assembly
candidates received $545,572 and spent $227,038 by this time two years ago.
Comparisons to 1985 for Senate candidates cannot be made because there was
no State Senate election in that year.
"Overall, Democratic candidates have raised slightly more money than
Republicans, $732,918 to $727,214," said Herrmann. On the other hand,
Republicans have outspent Democrats by $88,692. The Republicans spent $331,732
and the Democrats $243,040."
-more
According to Herrmann, the Senate candidates in the Democratic primary
raised $394,285 in contributions and spent $109,986. Their counterparts in the
Republican primary received $361,060 and expended $187,395.
Democratic Assembly candidates raised $338,632 and spent $133,053.
Assembly Republicans raised $366,153 and expended ~144t~37.
"Spending by Republican Assembly candidates," said Herrmann, "increased by
100 percent over 1985 levels ($71,843). Assembly Democrats, however, are
spending at only 86 percent of the 1985 level ($155,195)."
A profile of campaign receipts and expenditures shows that $982,199, or 67
percent, has been raised by incumbents and $477,932, or 33 percent,
by challengers. Incumbents have outsp.ent challengers $319,917 to $254,855.
There are a total of 105 incumbent candidates running in the primary, 40 of
those incumbents are Senate candidates while 65 incumbents are running for the
Assembly.
Incumbent Senate candidates received $509,603 or 67 percent of the $755,346
in contributions made to all Senate candidates, compared to $245,742 that went
to challengers. These same incumbents have spent $154,195 to the $143,186
spent by Senate challengers.
Herrmann added that in the Assembly, contributions to incumbents have
increased by 28 percent over 1985 while spending by incumbents has increased 11
percent. Likewise, contributions to challengers has increased by 31 percent
over 1985 while their spending has risen by 44 percent.
He said that Assembly incumbents raised $472,595 in 1987 compared to
$368,174 in 1985. They have spent $165,721 this year compared to $149,524 in
1985. Challengers for the Assembly received $232,190 compared to $177,398 two
years ago and spent $111,669 compared to $77,513 in 1985.
