The temporomandibular joint dislocates during excessive open-ing of the jaw or as a result of trauma. Most dislocations occuranteriorly because of the pull of the lateral pterygoid and thestrength of the lateral ligament and postglenoid tubercle.

The temporomandibular joint may become arthritic, leading toproblems with dental occlusion and joint clicking (crepitus).
