As simple as it sounds, most peo- ple will do whatever they can to avoid pain even if that means continuing to live with aspects of life that create misery. The discomfort and insecurity of authentic reflection, change, and subsequent personal growth elicit in many of us the ultimate pain, namely fear. Fear forms the basis of personal stagnation and often finds expression in acts of emotional imma- turity. The middle aged man for example who lives in dread of the aging process and clings for dear life to things that make him feel young instead of embracing new phases in life and the re- newed possibilities they bring, often exacerbates his emotional discomfort by engaging in a lifestyle that simply does not realistically work for him anymore. The experts in the field, namely the mys- tic Saints, teach us the importance of authentic reflection, which can only be achieved by stilling the mind, settling the emotions, and facing the fears. Undoubtedly this effects a certain discomfort in us, like the times you realise how mistaken you have been about something and it strikes you like lightening. At this juncture, the wise person sits with discomforting pain, allows its full emo- tional experience, learns to embrace it as a gift from God and as a key for the evolution of some- thing more beautiful in us. It is here that we often find Christ, in the fear and pain of realisation about our life. It is here we experience repentance as a change of heart, a redirection of our inner being, and as an ecstasy of all that is pure and beautiful in this world. It is little wonder that even the Ancients among our ancestors inscribed “Know Yourself” over the temple at Delphi. As the emotional ravages of daily life assault this journey even among those committed to reflec- tion and Christian life, it is easy and common to lose ourselves and our way. It is easier to deflect rather than reflect. For this reason the Church gives us Great Lent every year before we celebrate the essence of truth and beauty, namely abundant life flowing from the love of God through Christ’s resurrection. Great Lent gives us the tools used by the Mystics. We are given the Fast to settle our body and the physiology of our emotions, a more intense prayer life to focus our mind and nurture our heart, almsgiving to connect us more concretely to humanity, confession to reflect and experience repen- tance in dialogue, Holy Communion more regularly to feed our soul. Over the 20 years of my pas- toral experience I have observed it as a time when many choose to deflect or reflect more intensely.

Priest’s Message Deflect or Reflect?
Within every human person there are two great potentials. On the one hand we have an impres-
sive ability to deny, suppress, or manipulate reality to suit our psycho-social existence at any given
time in an attempt to contain the status quo of our life no matter how miserable at times. On the
other, we possess an almost unlimited capacity for deep reflection, which unleashes growth, crea-
tivity, and miraculous prospects for personal and social evolution. While the former often leads to
psycho-spiritual paralysis, the latter endows us with a nascent potential to blossom as Christ-like
flowers in a world of unfolding beauty.
The mystic Saints of our Tradition fought laboriously upon the battleground of these two forces
within us. They dissected the inner dynamics of human psychology and with profound struggles
discovered remarkable truths about human nature, the treasures of which can be accessed in the
writings of the Desert Fathers and other sources. At the crossroads of our choice to deflect or re-
flect in our lives is the all too common human experience of pain. As simple as it sounds, most peo-
ple will do whatever they can to avoid pain even if that means continuing to live with aspects of life
that create misery. The discomfort and insecurity of authentic reflection, change, and subsequent
personal growth elicit in many of us the ultimate pain, namely fear.
Fear forms the basis of personal stagnation and often finds expression in acts of emotional imma-
turity. The middle aged man for example who lives in dread of the aging process and clings for
dear life to things that make him feel young instead of embracing new phases in life and the re-
newed possibilities they bring, often exacerbates his emotional discomfort by engaging in a lifestyle
that simply does not realistically work for him anymore. The experts in the field, namely the mys-
tic Saints, teach us the importance of authentic reflection, which can only be achieved by stilling
the mind, settling the emotions, and facing the fears. Undoubtedly this effects a certain discomfort
in us, like the times you realise how mistaken you have been about something and it strikes you
like lightening. At this juncture, the wise person sits with discomforting pain, allows its full emo-
tional experience, learns to embrace it as a gift from God and as a key for the evolution of some-
thing more beautiful in us.
It is here that we often find Christ, in the fear and pain of realisation about our life. It is here we
experience repentance as a change of heart, a redirection of our inner being, and as an ecstasy of
all that is pure and beautiful in this world. It is little wonder that even the Ancients among our
ancestors inscribed “Know Yourself” over the temple at Delphi.
As the emotional ravages of daily life assault this journey even among those committed to reflec-
tion and Christian life, it is easy and common to lose ourselves and our way. It is easier to deflect
rather than reflect. For this reason the Church gives us Great Lent every year before we celebrate
the essence of truth and beauty, namely abundant life flowing from the love of God through
Christ’s resurrection.
Great Lent gives us the tools used by the Mystics. We are given the Fast to settle our body and the
physiology of our emotions, a more intense prayer life to focus our mind and nurture our heart,
almsgiving to connect us more concretely to humanity, confession to reflect and experience repen-
tance in dialogue, Holy Communion more regularly to feed our soul. Over the 20 years of my pas-
toral experience I have observed it as a time when many choose to deflect or reflect more intensely.

Εκτροπή ή Προβληματισμός;
