My experiences with Marathi My 3-year association with Marathi has gradually evolved into a organic bond, and has become an integral part of our way of life. Being away from home as an immigrant, yearning for motherland ( ) is always there. We all want to pass on a piece of our upbringing to our kids. And I think there is no better way to do that than through our mother tongue. I had heard about other regional language schools. So my kids attending Marathi was kind of like a dream for me. When we moved from Milwaukee, WI to Schaumburg, IL, under Vidya Joshi's leadership Marathi was being started as new initiative. It was a perfect timing and we got on-board immediately. Tejasi volunteered as teacher assistant, kids began their , I soon joined, and our journey began.

It has been a great experience to be a part of Marathi as a teacher. It is amazing how much there is to learn and teach about our language and culture. Also, kids want to know 'why' and 'how' of everything. They are not scared to ask questions and offer suggestions. This makes it very interesting and enriching experience. Marathi is not only limited to classroom learning but extends to participation in cultural activities, social gatherings, interactive play, crafts, parents' volunteering etc. Marathi started as an offshoot of MMC is now standing on a firm footing and will continue to grow, thanks to everyone's enthusiasm. As busy parents, sometimes we struggle to put time and effort in teaching our kids Marathi and sometime we doubt the whole initiative. It may not directly help our kids in their career, they probably will never understand the heart warming humor of .. , but I think this will bring them closer to their roots, and allow them to be comfortable with their identity.
