‘Why did Jesus have to die?’

“...may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians:6:14

“Forbid it Lord that I should boastsave in the cross of Christ my God;

All the vain things that charm me mostI sacrifice them to His blood.”

Isaac Watts

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of

God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to

Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and

the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.1:Corinthians:1:18-25

‘Why did Jesus have to die?’

The Shadow of Death is a religious painting by William Holman Hunt,

on which he worked from 1870 to 1873, during his second trip to the Holy Land.

It depicts Jesus as a young man prior to His ministry, working as a carpenter. He is shown stretching his arms after

sawing wood. The shadow of His outstretched arms falls on a wooden spar on which carpentry tools hang,

creating a "shadow of death" prefiguring the crucifixion.

His mother Mary is depicted from behind, gazing up at the shadow, having been looking into a box in which she has

kept the gifts given by the Magi.

‘Why did Jesus have to die?’“The Son of Man did not come

to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

(Matthew 20:28)

“Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that

he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life...” (Matthew 16:21-22)

“Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected?”

(Mark 9:12; 9:31; 10:33-34)

“Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures

concerning Himself…. ‘This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from

the dead on the third day.’” (Luke 24:26-27, 46)

“Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

28 They did what Your Power and Will had decided beforehand should happen. ”

(Acts:4:28)

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
