In 2017 alone, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) reported that 165 people had died and 46 people had been injured in 5 , 485 cases of building structural fire outbreaks nationwide . The fires also destroyed RM 3 . 10 billion worth of properties and valuables . Unfortunately, despite the incidents, the society’s level of awareness on the dangers and preprevention of fire has remained low, with most incidences could have been prevented from occurring . As Malaysia strives to become a developed nation within 2 years time by 2020 , the local fire safety industry must achieve a status at par with other developed nations . Every industry player, regulatory body, professional body and standards agency must move forward progressively within the Malaysian fire safety regulations . Realising the importance of fire safety in Malaysia, the Department of Standards Malaysia (Standards Malaysia) has published MS 1183 : 2015 , Fire Safety in the Design, Management and Use of Buildings under the deliberation of he Technical Committee for Passive Fire Protection System and relevant working groups . Adherence and compliance with stipulated regulations such as UBBL (Uniform Building By - Laws) 1984 as well as MS 1183 : 2015 will positively impact the public by improving the safety of buildings, living quality and public confidence . It will also ensure that the rights of the public to be protected from fire threats and incidences are being met and fulfilled . The seminar will enlighten all parties playing their roles to ensure that the development and enforcement of Malaysian Standards are in accordance with the objectives and expectations of the stakeholders .
