3. DIMENSIONS
As part of WLCHCP, Edinburgh Dental Institute employs in the region of 150 staff & has a wide training
grade base. Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Oral Healthcare are provided through referrals from medical
& dental colleagues in Primary Care or those working in other hospitals.
There are five clinical departments providing treatment for 50,000 patients per annum.
The Client group includes a patient base of both adults and children referred to the Institute for
complex/sophisticated treatments, uncooperative patients, patients with special needs including physical
and learning disabilities medically compromised patients and phobic patients.
The post holder would be given a base department on appointment, but will be required to assist in any of
the other departments as required. The post holder may be expected to work at the RHSC dental
department.

5. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT
The Edinburgh dental Institute provides specialist dental outpatient services in Oral Surgery, Oral
Medicine, Restorative Dentistry, Orthodontics and Paediatric dentistry on a referral basis.
Specific expertise exists for complex multi-disciplinary care which is provided through combined clinics
in the following areas:
Cleft clinic
Orthognatic clinic
Hypodontia clinic
Restorative clinic
Trauma clinic

Inhalation sedation and Intravenous sedation clinic
Maxillo/facial clinic
The EDI runs programmes for undergoing specialist training and contributes widely to the post graduate

6. KEY RESULT AREAS
1. To prepare the patient for dental treatment and to care for them before, during and after treatment,
giving emotional and physical support and encouragement as required throughout, ensuring their
comfort and therefore making treatment easier for everyone. To prepare instruments and equipment as
required prior to each procedure, including personal protective equipment for operator and patient.
2. To give chairside assistance to the operator during all dental procedures, enabling treatment to be
carried out to a high standard, including dental charting and writing up patient records under
instruction from the clinician.
3. To prepare and mix dental materials ready for use, as required for each procedure and to be aware of
COSHH guidelines for each material. Have up to date knowledge of new materials that are constantly
been used in the EDI.
4. To attend to the cleanliness of treatment areas, dental chairs and accompanying units, lights and other
specialist equipment in accordance with the Control of Infection Policy, including the safe disposal of
clinical waste, sharps and patients teeth and tissues.
5. To prepare instruments and place in appropriate containers ready for removal to Central Sterile
Services Department for decontamination (cleaning, packing and sterilisation) and to place in the
appropriate storage areas on their return from CSSD, ensuring that clean instruments are used in
rotation.
6. To prepare any medicines/drugs required for the patient under the supervision of the clinician.
7. Be responsible for the ordering of drugs/ medicines and the safe storage of same.
8. To deliver pre and post-operative instructions and provide Oral Health instruction, giving the patients
and their carers the knowledge, skills and confidence to improve and maintain good oral health.
9. To be responsible for the decontamination of Dental Laboratory work, packing and delivering to
Laboratory and for collecting and decontamination before fitting or posting out to patients.
10. To check specialist equipment and treatment areas and make ready for use, reporting any faults to
Estates management department in accordance with Health and safety guidelines, thus ensuring a safe
environment for colleagues, patients and their escorts and visitors to the department.
11. To use appropriate manual handling measures and equipment required during the manoeuvring of
patients and equipment.
12. To be responsible for the layout of units and maintenance of equipment and instruments ensuring
adequate stock of materials at units.
13. To carry out any clerical or administrative duties as required including stock control, dealing with
enquiries and complaints from patients, carers or other medical professionals and the triage of patients
presenting for emergency care.
14. Prepare notes and x rays for clinicians prior to joint complex clinics.
15. Attend meetings as required, and to be aware of and adhere to any Departmental, Directorate or Trust
policies and procedures.

8. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK
The post holder will be assigned duties and responsibilities by the Senior Dental Nurse.
On a daily basis the dental nurse will work mainly independently and automonsly.
The duties required may vary and in accordance with the requirements of the Institute and may be
subject to change at short notice if circumstances require.
Work will be reviewed on an annual basis as part of the personal development and performance review
process.
Weekly meetings are held for the nurses within the department.
Monthly meetings are held for the whole department/team.
Quarterly meeting are held for all Institute members of staff.

Excellent judgmental and analytical skills are required by the qualified dental nurse leading to
prompt action in a wide range of complex clinical and non-clinical procedures and situations.

staff resulting in accurate and efficient appointments for the clients.
Due to the wide and varied nature of the patient base and their physical and mental state, excellent
