2. JOB PURPOSE

To work as part of a team of Dental Nurses, giving clinical & administrative assistance as required to

Clinicians (Consultants, Post-graduate Degree Students, FTTA Specialist Registrars, Senior House

officers, General Professional Trainees, Specialist Dental Practitioners, Orthodontists, Dental Therapists

and Dental Hygienists) during all stages of treatment and care of patients. The post will include all duties

normally expected of a Qualified Dental Nurse required to provide high quality patient care.

To participate in all programmes arranged for the training of Dental Nurses in order to meet agreed

quality standards, to maintain awareness of any changes in dentistry and to participate in continuing

3. DIMENSIONS

As part of WLCHCP, Edinburgh Dental Institute employs in the region of 150 staff & has a wide training

grade base. Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Oral Healthcare are provided through referrals from medical

& dental colleagues in Primary Care or those working in other hospitals.

There are five clinical departments providing treatment for 50,000 patients per annum.

The Client group includes a patient base of both adults and children referred to the Institute for

complex/sophisticated treatments, uncooperative patients, patients with special needs including physical

and learning disabilities medically compromised patients and phobic patients.

The post holder would be given a base department on appointment, but will be required to assist in any of

the other departments as required. The post holder may be expected to work at the RHSC dental

department.

5. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT

The Edinburgh dental Institute provides specialist dental outpatient services in Oral Surgery, Oral

Medicine, Restorative Dentistry, Orthodontics and Paediatric dentistry on a referral basis.

Specific expertise exists for complex multi-disciplinary care which is provided through combined clinics

in the following areas:

Cleft clinic

Orthognatic clinic

Hypodontia clinic

Restorative clinic

Trauma clinic

Biopsy clinic

Implant clinic

Inhalation sedation and Intravenous sedation clinic

Maxillo/facial clinic

The EDI runs programmes for undergoing specialist training and contributes widely to the post graduate

training of all dentists in the south east of Scotland.. The EDI also trains Dental Therapists and Dental

Technicians.

6. KEY RESULT AREAS

1. To prepare the patient for dental treatment and to care for them before, during and after treatment,

giving emotional and physical support and encouragement as required throughout, ensuring their

comfort and therefore making treatment easier for everyone. To prepare instruments and equipment as

required prior to each procedure, including personal protective equipment for operator and patient.

2. To give chairside assistance to the operator during all dental procedures, enabling treatment to be

carried out to a high standard, including dental charting and writing up patient records under

instruction from the clinician.

3. To prepare and mix dental materials ready for use, as required for each procedure and to be aware of

COSHH guidelines for each material. Have up to date knowledge of new materials that are constantly

been used in the EDI.

4. To attend to the cleanliness of treatment areas, dental chairs and accompanying units, lights and other

specialist equipment in accordance with the Control of Infection Policy, including the safe disposal of

clinical waste, sharps and patients teeth and tissues.

5. To prepare instruments and place in appropriate containers ready for removal to Central Sterile

Services Department for decontamination (cleaning, packing and sterilisation) and to place in the

appropriate storage areas on their return from CSSD, ensuring that clean instruments are used in

rotation.

6. To prepare any medicines/drugs required for the patient under the supervision of the clinician.

7. Be responsible for the ordering of drugs/ medicines and the safe storage of same.

8. To deliver pre and post-operative instructions and provide Oral Health instruction, giving the patients

and their carers the knowledge, skills and confidence to improve and maintain good oral health.

9. To be responsible for the decontamination of Dental Laboratory work, packing and delivering to

Laboratory and for collecting and decontamination before fitting or posting out to patients.

10. To check specialist equipment and treatment areas and make ready for use, reporting any faults to

Estates management department in accordance with Health and safety guidelines, thus ensuring a safe

environment for colleagues, patients and their escorts and visitors to the department.

11. To use appropriate manual handling measures and equipment required during the manoeuvring of

patients and equipment.

12. To be responsible for the layout of units and maintenance of equipment and instruments ensuring

adequate stock of materials at units.

13. To carry out any clerical or administrative duties as required including stock control, dealing with

enquiries and complaints from patients, carers or other medical professionals and the triage of patients

presenting for emergency care.

14. Prepare notes and x rays for clinicians prior to joint complex clinics.

15. Attend meetings as required, and to be aware of and adhere to any Departmental, Directorate or Trust

policies and procedures.

16. To act as a scrub nurse in the general anaesthetic theatre, with the responsibility of assisting the

consultant anaesthetist and dental surgeon. Ensuring the correct equipment, instruments and materials

are on hand for each procedure.

17.Prepare sedation suite, checking gas cylinders and tubing for patient sedation.

Involved in the use of specialised dental hand instruments for each and every clinical procedure and

operation performed in the dental surgery including: Dental Inspection, Conservation, Prosthodontics

Periodontology, Orthodontics, Minor oral surgery, Preventive Dentistry.

Daily use and maintenance of all dental equipment including:

Dental chair, dental units including dental light, rotary instruments (handpieces), air scalers, ultrasonic

scalers, curing lights, compressed air/water syringes, surgical drills.

Assembly and disassembly of dental syringes, manual and electronic delivery system (Wand) used by

clinicians to administer local anaesthetics

Amalgamator used to mix dental amalgam and other materials in capsulated form

Acrylic trimmer, stand alone unit used to trim acrylic on dental appliances impression trays.

Alginator, mechanical device for mixing alginate impression material.

Pentamix mechanical device for mixing silicone based and other cartridge type impression materials.

Cameras, Dental-eye and Digital for taking intra-oral and extra-oral photographs of patients as part of

their records.

Intra-oral camera, to display images on-screen to patients for demonstration and as a teaching aid.

Computer used to store patient records, request x-rays, display appointment system, diaries, waiting lists,

audit tool, teaching tool, communication.

Sedation equipment and oxygen cylinders, checked daily and ensure that nitrous exposure levels are

monitored regularly.

Obtura 11 device for placing root fillings.

X Ray viewer for radiographic diagnosis.

Manoeuvring and decontamination of:

Emergency equipment on trolley, including oxygen cylinder and mask, de-fibrillator, and emergency

drugs and equipment required for the management of medical emergencies.

Electro surgery equipment.

Hoist, wheelchair, manual handling aids, to ensure the safe movement of patients with poor mobility.

7b. SYSTEMS

Inputting information to form part of patient records, including, patient details, medical history forms,

dental charting, updating patient details, completing database forms.

Creating patient boxes within the established system for the storage of dental study models and dental

appliances/prosthesis.

Storage and archiving of patients models as part of dental records.

Recording the need for supplies to be ordered on stock sheets

Recording patient details to ensure photographs are returned to the correct clinician.

Reporting and recording faulty equipment and its repair.

8. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK

The post holder will be assigned duties and responsibilities by the Senior Dental Nurse.

On a daily basis the dental nurse will work mainly independently and automonsly.

The duties required may vary and in accordance with the requirements of the Institute and may be

subject to change at short notice if circumstances require.

Work will be reviewed on an annual basis as part of the personal development and performance review

process.

Weekly meetings are held for the nurses within the department.

Monthly meetings are held for the whole department/team.

Quarterly meeting are held for all Institute members of staff.

9. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS

Excellent judgmental and analytical skills are required by the qualified dental nurse leading to

prompt action in a wide range of complex clinical and non-clinical procedures and situations.

Be able to prioritise workload, anticipate urgency and emergencies.

The needs of patients and clinician must be constantly anticipated, interpreted and dealt with efficiently.

Knowing when to seek further advice from a senior member of staff.

Dealing with enquiries and complaints from patients, parents/carers and other healthcare professionals,

including the responsibility of triaging patients who attend the department

Working within and adapting to a constantly changing environment

Working with all types of patients including physically and mentally handicapped, medically

compromised, anxious, phobic and children, all of whom can act unpredictably at any time.

Managing time and patients during acute trauma and emergency clinics.

11. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS

A qualified Dental Nurse is constantly required to liase and communicate with patients and their escorts,

other members of the dental team, such as dentists, therapists, hygienists,

laboratory technicians and radiology staff.

Good communication skills are required to enable the post holder to pass on information to the secretarial

staff resulting in accurate and efficient appointments for the clients.

Due to the wide and varied nature of the patient base and their physical and mental state, excellent

interpersonal and communication skills are essential to put everyone at their ease and to allow treatment

to be provided efficiently and effectively.
