Wynonna, born Christina Claire Ciminella, became a solo artist when her mother, Naomi, had to quit the group in 1991 due to chronic hepatitis. Moving from Curb/RCA to Curb/MCA – and produced by legendary producer Tony Brown – Wynonna’s first release as a solo act, “She Is His Only Need,” reached number one on the Country chart. “No One Else On Earth” was her third single as a solo artist. That song also reached number one on the Country chart, remaining there for four weeks; additionally, she reached the Hot 100 and was Top 40 on Billboard’s Hot Sales chart. Wynonna has had 30 chart singles, including four num- ber ones and a total of 11 that were Top 10. Her 2004 Curb album What The World Needs debuted at number one on the Billboard Album chart. Later, she had a Top Five single on the Billboard chart with her recording of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is,” which featured legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck. Frankie & Johnny was a 1991 film directed by GarryMarshall, starring Michelle Pfeiffer as a waitress(“Frankie”) and Al Pacino as a short-order cook(“Johnny”). It was based on the stage play written by

Terrence McNally. Peter Beckett and Jeanette Clinger performed “Until

You Let Go” in this romantic comedy.

Mark Miller moved to Nashville withkeyboardist Glen “Hobie” Hubbard, andthey were soon joined by a fellow Floridian, drummer Joe Smyth, who had taught at theUniversity of Miami. In Nashville theyadded bassist Jim Scholten and guitaristBobby Randall and named their groupSavannah, which was soon changed toSawyer Brown (after a road in Nashville).

Bobby Randall dropped out of thegroup and was replaced by Duncan

Cameron, who then left and was replacedby Shayne Hill. “Step That Step,” releasedon Curb/Capitol, was Sawyer Brown’ssecond single and first number one on theCountry chart; after this, they released 50chart singles on Curb, including 17 thatwent Top Five.

“Some Girls Do” is a defining song forthe band, with the line “I ain’t first classbut I ain’t white trash” articulating whothey – and their audience – are.

Tim McGraw’s father, legendary baseball pitcher Tug McGraw, sent Curb Records promotion man Mike Borchetta a tape of hisson. Borchetta, a baseball fan, brought the tape to the attention oflabel president Dick Whitehouse and Mike Curb.

McGraw had been performing “Indian Outlaw,” but it was notrecorded on his debut album for the label. During Fan Fair in 1993,Mike Curb and Phil Gernhard saw McGraw perform the song andencouraged him to record it for the label.

“Indian Outlaw” was the fifth single McGraw released for Curb– the other four didn’t get into the Top 40 – but this song went to

number eight when it was released in 1994 and established McGrawas a major act. His follow-ups included 24 number-one singles and12 number one albums. “Something Like That” in 2010 became themost-played song of the first decade of the 21st century.

By 2011, McGraw had 65 chart singles, including five with hiswife, Faith Hill, whom he married in 1996. One of those duets, “It’sYour Love,” was number-one for six weeks and won the CountryMusic Association’s award for Vocal Event of the Year.

McGraw has expanded his career to include acting; he hasstarred in Friday Night Lights, Blind Side, Black Cloud and Flicka.

The Osmonds were originally a barbershop-type quar-tet who became a pop/rock group that hit the Rhythm &Blues chart with “One Bad Apple.” On “Down By TheLazy River” – their fourth chart record on MGM whileMike Curb was president – the group became a rock n’roll band, playing their own instruments in this recording.

“Down By The Lazy River” reached number four onthe Billboard Hot 100 and was one of 23 chart records byThe Osmonds with Mike Curb. “Crazy Horses” was theireighth single and charted again 25 years later when theacclaimed Utah Saints remixed the record and proclaimedthe Osmonds “the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world!”

Mrs. Whigfield was the name of the piano teacher ofSannie Charlotte Carlson, so the singer took Whigfield asher name when she began recording. A European pop star,Whigfield was born in Denmark but grew up in Africa.

She became a model, and then began her singing

career in Italy when she recorded “Saturday Night” inLarry Pignagnoli’s studio. The song was an internationaldance hit and sold more than three million copies world-wide. In the United States, the song went Top 20 on theBillboard Club chart.

Curb Records has a strong international presence, anddance music has been an important part of the label. Curbsigned the Hamburg, Germany-based dance group FunFactory in the mid-‘90s.

The original group broke up in 1997, but a new FunFactory continues to record and tour. “I Wanna B With

U” landed on seven different American charts inBillboard: Club (number 10), Dance Sales, Hot 100, HotAirplay, Hot Sales, Main Top 40, and Rhythm & BluesTop 40.

This multi-racial group combines rap beats with verymelodic songs.

Junior Brown is known in the music world as theinventor of the “guit-steel,” an instrument that combines asix-string guitar and a steel guitar; it was built by luthierMichael Stevens in 1985 from Brown’s ideas.

Brown grew up in Kirksville, Indiana. He taught guitarat the Hank Thompson School of Country Music – part

of Rogers State College in Claremore, Oklahoma – thenmoved to Austin, Texas, to pursue his musical dreams. Hesigned with Curb Records in the early 1990s and hisrecording of “Highway Patrol” reached the BillboardCountry chart in 1995. His recording of “My Wife ThinksYou’re Dead” won the CMA Video of the Year award.

The Four Seasons were formedin Newark, New Jersey, in 1956.They were known as The FourLovers until Bob Gaudio, formerlyof the Royal Teens (“ShortShorts”) joined them in 1960.Gaudio became the group’s majorsongwriter, penning hits such as“Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry”and “Walk Like A Man.”

At the end of 1975, theyreleased “December 1963 (Oh,What A Night),” and the singlebecame a number one record forthree weeks in 1976, remaining onthe charts for 27 weeks. Thisrecording was one of the first sin-gles released on Warner/Curb, theventure Mike Curb had formedwith Warner Brothers Records.

In 1994, a re-mixed version ofthe song was released again by

Curb Records and included in thefilm Forrest Gump. This led to thesingle re-entering the Billboardcharts in August of that year. Thesingle reached number six on theMain Top 40, number eight on theHot Airplay, number 30 on theHot Sales and number 14 on theHot 100 – remaining there for 27weeks. These two 27-week stintson Billboard’s Hot 100 chartmeant the single was on that chartfor 54 weeks total; thus, it becamethe first record in the history ofthe Hot 100 chart in Billboard toremain on the chart more thanone year.

In 2008, The Four Seasons’Broadway show, Jersey Boys, wonmultiple Tony Awards and in 2014Jersey Boys became a hit film pro-duced by Clint Eastwood.

Gordy, released in 1995, was a Disney movie about atalking pig. The producers of the film needed an act tosing the song “Pig Power.” Mike Curb was in charge of

putting together the soundtrack album, and he found therap group Tag Team – who had a hit with “Whomp! There It Is” – to record the song for the movie.

When Garth Brooks was hot, a num-ber of Nashville songwriters wrote songsthey hoped he would record. Mike Curbwanted to find a singer who could doGarth Brooks-type songs and signed JeffHerndon, who did many of the demosintended for Garth.

The label changed Herndon’s name toJeff Carson and released “Not On Your

Love,” which went to number one on theBillboard Country chart and was also onthe Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Carson also recorded the Curb-pub-lished song “The Car,” which won theAcademy of Country Music Video of theYear award. Both records were producedby Chuck Howard.

Duane Eddy had a number of instrumental hits begin-ning with “Rebel-Rouser,” which reached the Top Ten in1958. He signed to Jamie Records after dropping out ofhigh school at 16 to work with a dance band. Dick Clarkfeatured Eddy on his American Bandstand TV show andon the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars.

Eddy was produced by Lee Hazelwood, a Phoenix discjockey who became his mentor. In Eddy’s band were

Larry Knechtel on piano, Al Casey and Steve Douglas.Performing on his custom-made Chet Atkins modelGretsch guitar, Eddy performed instrumental versions of anumber of pop and country hits.

“Ghost Riders In The Sky” was written by Stan Jones, and was a number-one pop hit for Vaughn Monroe in1949. Eddy’s rock version was produced by Bob Gaudioand released on Curb Records.

Paul Anka is one of the most successful artists of theearly rock n’ roll period. He was born in Ottawa, Ontario,Canada, and wrote major hits for artists including BuddyHolly, Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra. As an artist, he had60 songs that hit the Billboard Hot 100, including 12 Top

Tens and three number ones: “Diana,” “Lonely Boy” and“Having My Baby” which are now part of Curb Records.

His recording of “Freedom For The World” featuredIsraeli singing star Ofra Haza, and has become a rockanthem around the world on Curb Records.

Whiteheart was formed originally in 1982 by GaryLunn (bass), Steve Green (vocals), David Huff (drums),Mark Gersmehl (keyboards), Dann Huff (guitar) and BillySmiley (keyboards, guitar and vocals). The name of thegroup came from Steve Green after he saw a video by JoanJett and The Blackhearts and thought the group shouldreflect an opposite point of view; hence, “Whiteheart.”

This pioneer Christian rock group’s core membersBilly Smiley and Mark Gersmehl are the major songwrit-ers. In 1995, Whiteheart released Inside, its debut albumon Curb that featured “Even The Hardest Heart,” whichreached number two on the CCM Christian Chart. Thegroup went on to have eight chart records with Curb.

The Banana Splits, a late 1960s kids show in England, and Roxy Music’s Pyjamarama gave the band Bananaramaits name. The trio was formed in London in late 1981;none of the members could play an instrument, and thegroup refused to do concert tours. Still, they became themost successful British girl group in pop history until The

Spice Girls in the 1990s. In 1986 they released a cover of “Venus,” a hit for

MGM by The Shocking Blue when Mike Curb headedthat label. “Every Shade Of Blue” reached the BillboardDance Sales chart in 1996 on Curb Records.

Trini Triggs is an African-Americancountry singer from Natchitoches,Louisiana. His debut record on Curb wasreleased in 1998, and he had three chartsingles: “Straight Tequila,” “Horse ToMexico,” and “The Wreckin’ Crew.” Triggsalso recorded the Chuck Berry classic

“You Never Can Tell” which Mike Curbpersonally produced.

“Trini Triggs was a major talent anddefinitely ahead of his time,” said MikeCurb. “We were proud to have him on ourlabel and proud of his accomplishmentson the Billboard chart.”

Tim McGraw had been releasing hits forfive years before he recorded “It’s Your Love”with his new wife, Faith Hill. Initially, McGrawwas reluctant to release the song as a singlebecause he had always led off with an up-temponumber to introduce a new album.

Mike Curb finally persuaded McGraw torelease “It’s Your Love” as a single, and it wentto the top of the Country chart and remainedthere for six weeks; it remained on the CountrySales chart for 12 weeks in the number-one

position, and on the charts for 61 weeks intotal. The single also crossed over and reachednumber seven on the Hot 100 and numberthree on the Hot Sales charts in Billboard.

“This record bridged the gap of that two-year period when Faith was in between records, and it introduced her to Byron Gallimore, whobecame her producer and recorded ‘This Kiss’and ‘Breathe’ with her,” said Curb.

The record became the CMA Vocal Eventof the Year.

As a child, Michael English sang withhis family group, The Singing Samaritans;after high school he joined The SingingAmericans and, in 1985, joined The BillGaither Vocal Band.

Gaither encouraged English to embarkon a solo career and, in 1994, Englishswept the Gospel Music Association’sDove Awards; however, a personal issuewas revealed and his gospel label droppedhim. Nevertheless, Curb signed English as

a pop gospel singer. His debut albumFreedom was released in 1996 and featuredthe single “Your Love Amazes Me,” whichreached number 10 on the AdultContemporary chart.

“Gospel Ship” was recorded by TheCarter Family in 1935; the song datesback to the 19th century. MichaelEnglish’s recording demonstrates hisability to sing black gospel music.

Mike Curb first heard LeAnn Rimes on a tape he playedwhile traveling with his family to the Smoky Mountains fora weekend vacation. The song was “Blue,” and it hit theCountry chart in May 1996, went to number 10 and won aGrammy when LeAnn was 13.

Her first number one single was “One Way Ticket” andby the end of 2013 she had charted over 40 singles on CurbRecords, 11 of them were Top 10. In 2013 she released her14th album on Curb Records titled Spitfire, including“Gasoline and Matches” featuring Rob Thomas and JeffBeck and in 2014 released her 15th album featuring themusic from the television show Eddie and LeAnn.

LeAnn’s biggest hit was “How Do I Live,” which wasscheduled to be the title song for the movie Con Air,produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Rimes had recorded thesong for the movie, but the film’s producers elected to gowith a version sung by Trisha Yearwood, who released it as asingle in the country market.

LeAnn’s version of the song was floundering until achance encounter at LaGuardia Airport in New York.Mike and his daughter, Courtney, met LeAnn and hermother, and Courtney Curb suggested the song bereleased to the pop market. It rose to the number-oneposition on the Adult Contemporary chart, remaining inthat position for 11 weeks and stayed on that chart for anincredible 65 weeks.

The record catapulted LeAnn Rimes from country star tointernational superstar; her version of this song reachednumber one on the Dance Sales, number two (for fourweeks) on the Hot 100, number three on the Hot Airplay, number two on Hot Sales, number four on Main Top 40,number one on Dance Sales, and number one on Country

Sales (remaining in that position for 32 weeks and on thatchart for 309 weeks!), an all-time record for chart longevity.

“This also became the longest-running record on theBillboard Hot 100 charts in the entire 20th century,” saidMike Curb. “We have a philosophy at our company ofturning negatives into positives, and there’s no betterexample than this record, which was initially rejected bycountry radio – our intended audience – but became anincredible pop crossover hit.”

Jerry Bruckheimer produced the movie Coyote Ugly forDisney. It was directed by David McNally and starred PiperPerabo, Adam Garcia, John Goodman, Maria Bello, IzabellaMiko and Tyra Banks. Ordinarily, Disney Records wouldcompile the soundtrack album but the label did not believethey would be able to clear the permissions for all the songs,so they passed.

“Please Remember” – a ballad written by Diane Warrenfor the film – had not been recorded, so Mike Curb went toHollywood at the suggestion of super agent Tom Ross towatch the movie, because they felt the song might fit LeAnnRimes. Curb met with Kathy Nelson, who was in charge offilm music at Disney, about the soundtrack and told her hewould like to work on the album if it could come out onCurb Records.

“At first they said ‘no’ but then came back and said ‘yes,if you can clear all the songs.’” said Curb. “That led toLeAnn Rimes recording four songs for the movie, including a hit song by Diane Warren, ‘Can’t Fight TheMoonlight.’ We ended up putting LeAnn on four songs. Infact, LeAnn also sang the vocals for Piper Perabo, the leadactress in the film.”

Family Tree, released in 1999, was directed by DuaneClark and produced by Curb’s film production companyheaded by his sister, Carole. It starred Robert Forster,Naomi Judd, Andrew Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence andCliff Robertson. The movie, written by Paul Canterna,

was about a kid whose best friend is a tree. The title song was written by Deborah Allen and

Mike Curb and was sung by Mary Griffin. “We Can GetThere” was her biggest hit, becoming a Top 40 record onBillboard.

Bill Anderson is one of the greatest songwriters in thehistory of Nashville, having had hits in five differentdecades. Bill also had an amazing career as a recordingartist, and Curb Records was very proud that his 80th andfinal chart record was released on its label. In addition to

his great career as a songwriter and artist, he appeared inseveral movies and tv shows including his own show. Atone time he worked as a sportswriter and a DJ and lateras a game show host, as well as on Opry Backstage.

Mike Curb brought Jonathan Pierce, Nicol Smith ofSelah and the lead singer of Whiteheart with him to the1994 Dove Awards. After Michael English sang, Curbasked Pierce, “Can you sing like that?” and he replied, “YesI can – I can sing like that.”

Curb had just told Larry Strickland he was looking forthe next Michael English. Jonathan’s first record, “HealingHands,” was a great song for the Adult ContemporaryChristian market. Pierce quickly hit number one on theChristian charts and recorded several hits.

Riley B. King was born in Indianola, Mississippi, andmoved to Memphis when he was 20. He was a radio DJknown as “The Beale Street Blues Boy,” later amended to“Blues Boy King” and then “B.B. King.”

His first hit was “Three O’Clock Blues,” recorded forRPM, a subsidiary of Los Angeles-based ModernRecords. King played his Gibson 355 named “Lucille” and

his jazz-influenced blues influenced a whole generation ofyoung guitarists.

King’s biggest single hit was a cover of the RoyHawkins song “After The Thrill Is Gone” in 1970.

Thanks to Lee Atwater, B.B. King recorded his classicrecordings of “Buzz Me” and “Red, Hot & Blue” for CurbRecords.

“People Get Ready” was a classic Memphisrock/gospel performance featuring five of the greatestR&B artists in the history of Memphis music: ChuckJackson, Carla Thomas, Sam Moore, Billy Preston and

Isaac Hayes. The song was originally a hit for TheImpressions in 1965; it is a Grammy Hall of Fame andRock and Roll Hall of Fame recording.

Isaac Hayes played a key role in the Memphis musiccommunity, which became the creative center for soul musicin the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was a member of theStax house band in the mid-1960s and formed a songwritingpartnership with David Porter. Hayes and Porter wrote “SoulMan” and “Hold On, I’m Coming” for Sam and Dave.

In 1967, Hayes began recording solo albums forEnterprise, a subsidiary of Stax. His biggest hit was the

soundtrack to the movie Shaft, and Mike Curb and AlBell played significant roles in putting the album together.

Billy Preston was a childhood prodigy. He played organfor Mahalia Jackson and then worked for Sam Cooke andLittle Richard before joining The Beatles for “Get Back.”

“I’m In The Mood” is a bluesy, soulful recordingthat captures the Memphis sound of the late 1960s andearly 1970s.

“Written In The Stars” came from the Broadwaymusical Aida, written by Elton John and Tim Rice. RogerAmes used to be Curb’s distributor in England when heowned London Records, before he became president ofPolygram and then president of Warner Brothers.

In England, Ames and Phil Cokell played a key role inbreaking “How Do I Live” by LeAnn Rimes. He suggesteda joint venture between Elton John’s Rocket label and CurbRecords to help solidify LeAnn as an international artistand help Elton domestically. The result was a worldwide hit.

Quest For Camelot was an animated film directed byFrederik Du Chau from the novel by Vera Chapman. Itstarred Jessalyn Gilsig, Andrea Corr and Cary Elwes, andfeatured the voices of Steve Perry, Bryan White, AndreaCorr and Celine Dion singing.

Bryan White sings “I Stand Alone” for the WarnerBrothers film about a young girl who dreams of becominga knight and ends up saving the kingdom. The soundtrackalso featured “Looking Through Your Eyes,” recorded byThe Corrs with Bryan White.
