Academia, infrastructure, alumni, faculty, placements, and rank-ing among the top colleges are some of the parameters that mea-sure how successful an educational institution is; but what really separates a good college from a great college is the feedback of its students and their opinions and suggestions being implemented on the administrative level for their greater welfare.

Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, has always been recognized for its excellent academic record and world-class facilities in addi-tion to its strong alumni base. The college has witnessed colossal progress not only in the field of education but also in the field of student activities in the form of running clubs and societies and conducting three major fests: Pantheon, BITOTSAV, and VAJRA.

« MESSAGE FROM OUR DEAN STUDENTS’ WELFARE

BIT Mesra has been achieving unprecedented heights since its gene-sis. As we respect our past and turn our concentration to the future, I know significant achievements lie ahead. The major motive of this edition of the e-newsletter is to provide the students with an over-view of the ongoing research work being carried out by the profes-sors of the various branches.

The word ‘research’ vents a whine from those who simply have no idea as to where to commence from. This is a typical reaction, espe-cially in case of engineering students who look down upon research. The fact is, many of us hesitate when it comes to doing research be-cause we just don’t know how to do it. I have observed that the pres-sure amongst the students is more on passing examinations rather than a hands-on learning experience. Hence according to me, we need a R&D push.

The significance of research in engineering has grown to levels of sophistication. Undergraduate re-search is a pedagogical tool that helps channelize the vitality and ardour of the students into conceptual learning. Research activities thereby stimulate their grey matter to explore the world around them with curiosity.

This initiative of the News and Publication Society will definitely help the students to become aware of the multitudinous research activities being carried out in BIT Mesra. “Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity”. I hope all of you make the most out of the opportunities that BIT Mesra offers for the overall development of a student. Wishing all of you the best of luck for all your future endeavours!

  • Imagine getting your bachelor’s degree in engi-neering from BIT Mesra and going back to your home without a job. No, it wasn’t bad luck that de-nied you a job opportunity. You chose not to apply for any of those high paying jobs that your batch mates crave for. To top it off, you tell your parents that you want to start your own business. Your dad, who has been a government employee for more than three decades is not enraged. Instead, he doesn’t know what to say to you. Baffled, con-fused, out of wits and about to burst into hysterical ramblings, your mother puts her hand reassuring-ly on his shoulder and offers him a glass of water. She looks into your eyes, fear and concern fighting tears of disappointment. Growing up in a mid-dle-class family, you were taught that the only way to become successful in life is by studying hard so that you are hired by a reputed firm. Your father, who has been riding the same old Vespa to his of-fice since he started working, had helped you with mathematics and science while you were in school. Ever since your sister was born, your mother, who was initially a housewife, started working as a home tutor to help with the finances. Vacations to snowy hill stations or sunny beaches were a rarity, the annual trip to your grandparents’ house was the only fixed occurrence. All their lives, your par-ents had saved up their hard-earned money so that you could go to a good college and finally, help re-duce the burden on their shoulders by getting a job. And yet, nothing could change your mind.

As your mother approaches you, you feel the noose around your neck tightening, gasping for air in a room filled up to the brim with tangible ten-sion. She asks you a single question, “Are you sure about this?” You had always known the answer, of course, you did. “Yes, I am more than just sure.”

The idea of working for MNCs and earning six-fig-ure salaries is no longer what the entirety of the Indian youth craves for. Instead, it is the spirit of entrepreneurship that is wreaking havoc in these fresh minds. Of course, eyebrows are raised and attempts at discouragement are commonplace, but passion is impervious to dissuasion. The very thought of being out of the sophisticated clutches of corporate life and being set free of the chain that hung around your feet as a contractual slave fills you with joy. You are no longer the employee, you are not dictated by your superior and most impor-

tantly, you are no longer confined in the inescapable pit of dependence. Yes, you are now the employer. You are the master of your own self. And that feeling of independence is indescribable.

Although I have been emotional so far, do not be overjoyed as to overlook the key requirements of be-ing a successful entrepreneur in your pursuit of hap-piness. The term entrepreneur, originally French, means “the owner or manager of a business enter-prise who, by risk and initiative, attempts to make profits”. The first thing you need is an idea for the business. Peyush Bansal, a former developer at Mic-rosoft, and Amit Chaudhari, a BIT Mesra alumnus, recognized the potential of e-commerce in the op-tical store business in India when no one else had thought about it. This led to the birth of Lenskart.com, an online bazaar for glasses, frames, lens and what not. But an idea can only turn into a business if it has the necessary potential. So the next thing you have to ask yourself is who will you be selling your service to? When Gautam Sinha, a computer science graduate from BIT Mesra and a highly experienced technical expert, returned to India after spending years in USA, he didn’t want to work for an MNC. Instead, he joined the Times Internet, which was a media company back then. Quickly, he realized the vast potential that the future of internet-based media held and played a key role in expanding the Times Internet into a digital media giant. Today, more than half of India’s entire internet users are engaged in its products like the TOI, Gaana, Cricbuzz and Magic-bricks.com. But what use is an idea without the nec-essary backing? That is where your investors step in unless of course, you are magnanimously rich. The amount of funding depends on the type of product or service you wish to sell. For example, a former BIT Mesra student, Abhishek Sinha, co-founded Eko financial services in 2007 along with his brother Abhinav Sinha, with an initial investment of half a

million dollars collected from friends and fami-ly. Their firm initially provided peer-to-peer cash transfers, cash deposits and withdrawals amongst other financial services with the noble aim of pro-viding affordable banking services to the unac-knowledged and utterly poor immigrant labour population of India. Although initially shaky, their firm was handed a major boost when they received a grant funding worth $ 1.78 million from CGAP Technology Program in 2009, which is funded by both the World Bank and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Now that you have the necessary funding, it might sound as if the task is almost done. But this is where most of the budding entrepreneurs are wrong. It is only after the funding, that the real challeng-es present themselves. So far, your idea was con-ceived, approved and funded. But does that mean it will sustain itself in the market? Nine out of ten start-ups fail to succeed and that is mostly because of their inability to turn their theoretical strategies of marketing into actual profiteering ones. But fail-ure is no stranger to successful people, it is, in fact, an insightful teacher. Elon Musk, the living and slightly less heroic version of Bruce Wayne, was ousted from Paypal, a company he founded him-self, while on a honeymoon in the early 2000s. As recently as 2018, he had to step down from the po-sition of the Chairman at Tesla, the revolutionary electrical vehicle makers he had been comman-deering for more than a decade.

Human beings are easily tempted by the idea of working less and gaining more. And to the vast majority of people, entrepreneurship sounds like an escape from the toils of corporate life and into the bliss of billion dollar wealth. And they couldn’t be more wrong. Steve Jobs, the legendary founder of Apple, had to resign from his own company. Yet, he didn’t stop. He went on to start Next Computers and Pixel entertainment and re-joined Apple as its CEO in the late 90s. Therefore, while it may appear that innovation, persuasion and leadership are the qualities that make for a good entrepreneur, the ability to work relentlessly even when desolated in the lonely oceans of failure, is a priceless gem. So, I hope that you become the next big thing, but always remember your mother’s words, “Are you sure about this?”

    « BECOME YOUR OWN BOSS?

« IN CONVERSATION WITH: DEAN ALUMNI & INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSstudents. The majority of the placed students are from the circuital branches. We are trying to get students from the non-circuital branches placed too but the problem is that they are unable to match the expectations of the IT product sector. In the IT sec-tor also, they need candidates from the non-circuital branches but students are unable to perform because they lack exposure to the modern concepts related to the IT sector. So that has become a hindrance to us, as far as the non-circuital branches are con-cerned. Almost all students of the circuital branches have been placed.

We cannot guarantee 100% placement, but that is not our mistake. All companies have certain eligibility criteria relating to backlogs and CGPA. Students are unable to fulfil these criteria even after getting many chances. This time we decided to put a bar on the number of attempts that a student can make. I lim-ited the attempts to 10 companies but then I found that many students couldn’t secure a placement even after they were allowed 10 attempts. So we yielded and allowed the students to sit for more than 10 campus placement processes. By this, we also man-aged to save our relationship with the recruiters. The thing is when you commit a large number of students for campus placement, companies come ac-

This year, BIT witnessed an increase in the num-ber of companies offering on-campus internships and placements. To throw more light on the place-ment scenario, we had an exclusive interview with Dr. Utpal Baul, who apart from being the Dean Alumni & International Relations is also the Pro-fessor Incharge of the Training & Placement Divi-sion. Here are some excerpts from the interview.

Q- How has this year’s placement process been different from the last year?A- It has been different this year because we have tried to bring in more core companies to the cam-pus and according to the statistics, by the end of September, we have been able to place 55% of the

cordingly. They too make their own plans and pro-grams and build a panel accordingly. Once they find out that there are 100 students out of which only 40 students have turned up, they feel really bad and they refuse to come to the college next year. So that sabotages our relationship. That is completely unacceptable, therefore I told my stu-dents to think very carefully before applying for a job. If you are applying for a job, you have to turn up and you have to give it your best shot.

Also, I found that many students who are deserv-ing enough are unable to get placed because of their lack of soft skills or because of the way they present themselves. Apart from the technical ex-pertise and knowledge, the way you present your-self is also equally important. This has also been pointed out by a number of recruiters. We are very concerned about the students who have appeared for a number of placement processes and are yet to get placed.

Q- Is anything being planned for such students? Are they being trained to develop their soft skills?A- Based on the feedback that we have received from various recruiters, we have had discussions on starting training programs with the heads of various departments and the Dean of the Academic Program. We are trying to chalk out a program wherein we can start a crash course for the students, which would give them exposure to whatever is happening in the IT sectors including the contemporary practices. We plan to train them to achieve their dreams. As far as the Government of India is con-cerned they are sending in a lot of money to all educa-tional institutions for skill-development under TEQIP. It has become mandatory for the institutions coming under TEQIP to implement programs teaching soft skills. It is similar to a finishing school. So this program will be fi-nalized within a time period of six to eight weeks. I don’t know the exact details but we were discussing it with the TEQIP coordinator just two days back. Another factor is that there will be employability skill enhancement pro-grams, also sponsored by TEQIP. This will start from the next semester, i.e., spring 2019 which will be beneficial for the next batch that will be coming in 2020.These are some of the few plans that we have in mind and we have already identified the areas which we need to work upon. They have asked for students to have good exposure to Big Data, Machine Learning, AI, etc. We had a discussion with some teachers from the Computer Sci-ence department. I also had a long discussion with the Dean Students’ Welfare of BIT Mesra, Dr. Mahesh Chan-dra. All of us got together and we have put together a plan for certain programs. These programs, which will be funded by TEQIP, will train the students on the skills which are necessary to secure a job in the present scenar-io. Hence, the benefits will definitely be there.

Q- Sir, as you mentioned that the placement scenario in the IT sector is robust but when it comes to core place-ments, our college lags behind colleges like NIT Jamshed-pur. What is the reason for the same and will it change in the near future? Where are we lagging behind?A- BIT Mesra has had a very good beginning. All of you know and are proud of the fact that Microsoft started the placement season and recruited 20 students and is pro-viding them with the package of 39 lakhs. Microsoft was followed by Goldman Sachs and SalesForce, who also gave away huge packages (placements as well as intern-ships).As far as core placement scenario is concerned, I am try-ing my best to do something about it. See, it is all about the market demand. The market demand in the core sec-tor has come down to a constant, hasn’t it? They do not require too much manpower. If such companies require manpower, they usually go to the IITs and NITs for re-cruitment. They do come to BIT but with a different kind of a package. In the IITs, they usually offer a package of 15-16 lakhs whereas in BIT they offer a package of 4-5 lakhs only. That is another problem.

Q- Sir, is it because the students are not concentrating on their core papers and running after the software companies?A- Yes, they need to understand and realize that they need to have a very clear concept of their subjects, they have to answer the questions that are being asked to them. Also, soft skills play an important role. I would like to tell you that there are three different institutes that are coming to the campus and offering free soft skills training programmes- IMS Learning Resources, Career Launcher and B Factory. They are conducting CAT sessions as well as Soft Skill training sessions, but the students are not attending those classes. So, we have everything to offer but if you do not take it then what can we do? I myself conducted a session last year, on AI and Big Data Analytics, an in-house training program. It was conducted on a Saturday and Sunday. Out of the 200 students who registered, only 25 turned up. I also need some kind of encouragement from the students but that is definitely lacking. Anyway, I am not saying that there is a shortcut. I cannot say that I will excuse myself from the responsibility of placing my students in good orga-nizations. It is my responsibility, to see to it that they are well placed in good organizations but at the same time, we need a little bit of support from all the students.

Q- Talking about the consultancy companies, this year the companies that visited the college changed their job profile, as they came for the post of a Business Analyst which requires the knowledge of Machine Learning and SQL. So sir, what according to you are the reasons behind this sudden shift?A- We had an academy industry interaction/sympo-sium and this was the first time that it happened in BIT Mesra. It was very successful and the companies were also very interested. So we had an open discussion with them. See, they say that their business scenario is chang-ing by the day and maybe, it is, in some sort of way, cyclic in nature. The kind of skill set they need is very dynamic, it changes very swiftly. It all depends upon the business situation. So, these are some of the skills that are definitely required and are very important for the students to develop. In consultancy organizations also, without these skills, you won’t be able to survive.

Q- A common grievance has been that the students who get placed in a particular company are not allowed to sit for other companies which they deem to be better for them. Why is that so?A- See, we have our standard operating procedure and that exists in all educational institutions. A standard op-erating procedure is an outcome of a series of meetings

that take place in the T&P department where all the members of the T&P committee are present in order to decide a permit. Let me talk you through the procedure. If you get placed in an ITES (Information Technology and Engineering Services) company with a package below 5 lakhs, you will get an opportunity to apply in some company offering better package. But if you get a job in the core sector, you cannot reapply. Suppose you get placed in TCS or say Wipro with a package of 3.5, 4 or 4.5 lakhs, then also you have an opportunity to go for a higher package. Also, whenever we find that there are companies who are going to offer very good packages, say above 14 or 15 lakhs, and the placement season is almost over, then we have a meeting and decide upon whether to open those companies up for everybody. We call it giving the company a Dream Status. So, for a Dream Company, all the students are allowed to apply. Like Adobe, for girls, it was a dream job. Anybody and everybody could apply, irrespective of whether they al-ready had a job or not. It is true that many students who have a job are not go-ing to get another opportunity because we feel that it is our responsibility to ensure that more and more stu-dents get placed. At the same time, suppose we make a commitment to a company and the student says, yes I am going to take this offer and if he/she does not join, then that spoils our relationship. There are many com-panies who have stopped visiting just because of this practice. Even after one or two months of joining, if our students leave, the blame is upon us. We have to main-tain our relationship because they are the givers as well as takers and if we are not able to make them happy, they are not going to come to us. The core companies are not paying enough salary and many students leave for higher paying jobs or higher studies. Once we make a commitment, we try to ensure that it is fulfilled but at the same time, we give our students a chance to secure dream jobs. If our students are getting an opportunity to grab a package of more than 15 lakhs, we can risk spoiling our relationship with the recruiters. We try to make them understand that the students are getting a package of 15 lakhs whereas their company is offering a package of maximum 4-5 lakhs. In case of ITES companies, they do not mind as they are mass re-cruiters. If 10 or 12 of 100 students selected by them leave, they do not mind. They always recruit with that mindset.

Q- Is it realistic for a student of a non-circuital branch to dream of being placed in Microsoft if he is into cod-ing?A- Honestly, no, because they don’t fulfil the eligibili-ty criteria which is defined by the recruiters. They are generally into students from the circuital departments. The companies usually are in a search of students with circuital exposure. They usually ask for Computer Sci-ence/IT students or ECE students at most-no matter how good the non-circuital branch students are.

« ON GOING RESEARCH IN BITIn the previous edition of BIT by BIT, we listed all the various projects undertaken by the departments of our institutes and the funds allocated for the same. In this edition, we bring to you more details of the researches, currently going on in each department as described by the faculty members themselves.

» Department of ChemistryThe department of Chemistry has a number of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and excellent professionals who are currently pursuing research in various areas. The upcoming research areas are inclusive of non-linear dynamics, electrochemistry, fuel cells, renewable energy sources, nanomaterials, organic and medicinal chemistry, environmental and inorganic chemistry, biopolymers, chemical oscillation and pattern formation. The projects received have been funded by agencies like DST, BRNS-DAE, SERB etc.

  • BIT BY BIT February 2019 4

» Department of Space Engineering and RocketryThe department’s research work can be narrowed down into two categories- Aerodynamics and Rocket Propulsion. In India, research on Rocket Propulsion is exclu-sively offered only in BIT Mesra. Recently the department has fabricated a new low-cost wind tunnel. Research on the flow of cylinder bodies, jet flows, combustion efficiency and jet propellants are being carried out by the scholars. Aerodynamics projects include cavity flow dynamics, oscillatory flow in a cavity at supersonic speed and high angle of attack of cylinder body aerodynamics. The projects received have been funded by agencies like ISRO, DRDO, SERB-DST etc.

» Department of Chemical EngineeringThe department of Chemical Engineering is presently working on two projects. The objective of ‘Development of Electronic Nose for Detection and Biomarker Vapour Blends using Conductive Nanocomposite Sensors’ is to diagnose lung cancer by detecting volatile organic chemicals, like ethanol and water vapour, that are present, in traces, in the exhaled human breath. However, the exhaled breath of a patient suffering from lung cancer consists of these chemicals in higher quantities. The electronic nose is being designed to detect the mixture of traces of such gases in the artificially created Biomarker Vapour Blend. The second project is ‘Devel-opment of Advanced Polybenzimidazole based Nanocomposite Materials for Potential Defence Application’. The projects received have been funded by agencies like SERB, DRDO etc.

» Department of Bio EngineeringThe department of Bio Engineering has excellent academic and research environment that nurture young minds. Presently, major research in the department include ‘Identification and Molecular Characterisation of SNARE genes in Wheat in Response to Leaf Rust Disease’. This will develop a rust resistant variety of wheat. Differ-ent projects in OCT will help in the development of non-invasive method of tissue imaging. Preservation of local mushroom ‘rugra’ is also being studied. ‘Rugra’ is a seasonal mushroom that has not been cultured so far but is aimed for preservation. This might prove to be an additional source of income for the farmers and could also make tastier mushrooms available to the people. Apart from these, research in areas like proteomics and bioinformatics is also going on. The projects received have been funded by agencies like ICMR, DBT, CSIR etc.

» Department of Mechanical EngineeringThe department of Mechanical Engineering is currently working on many new domains. An innovative approach for the simulation of energy conservation in build-ings has been initiated. The students are focusing on solar energy trees and systems so as to lessen the consumption of electricity. A major area of research that has been undertaken by the Post Graduate students is the medical approach to reverse engineering challenges. The students are working on hip implant and maxofacial surgery techniques which shall lead to the reduction of time in pre-surgery. If successful, this can also be regarded as a ‘Make in India’ concept. Another research project taken up is on the Sterling Engine and the students are trying their best to design one such engine. The projects recieved have been funded by agencies like MHRD, SERB etc.

» Department of Remote SensingThe department of Remote Sensing is carrying forward a national project on ‘Land Mapping’. It is based on the India-level land cover mapping. 21 districts of Bihar and 37 districts of UP have been looked over by the department for the last two years. The work was reported to the National Remote Sensing Centre, Hyderabad (NRSC) who then compiled the inputs from every centre and developed a report for the nation. Other projects like the ‘National Waste Land Mission’ and the ‘Land Degradation Mission’ have been taken up too. Students have been recruited to collaborate in these projects that involve satellite studies, critical understanding and hence, an analysis of the topographical features. Currently, a project called ‘Mangalyaan’ is being conducted in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Orga-nization (ISRO). As a part of the project, a workshop was conducted in collaboration with the India-UK Water Centre(IUKWC). The centre has organised many brainstorming workshops concerning drought and its impact on the nation and its economy. Our esteemed Head of the Department was one of the delegates who represented the issues and challenges in the University of Lancashire, UK. Students are also working on the research components of climate change like the melting of glaciers and its challenges. The department is also responsible for the proposal and analysis of the data collected by satellites, for the projects like ‘Mangalyaan’ and ‘Chandrayaan’. The projects received have been funded by agencies like SAC-ISRO, GOI-NRSC etc.

» Department of Electrical and Electronics EngineeringThe department is working on ‘Grid Integration of Renewable Energy Sources’ to develop an autonomous control for 5kW solar energy, 3kW wind emulator and a battery storage with utility grid. The department is also working on ‘Design of Efficient Controller for Electric Vehicle’ to develop a cost effective and energy efficient design of an electrical drive system to meet the requirements of electric vehicles. Design of vehicle to grid integration system is also in progress. The department is now trying to develop an adaptive control based navigation and control system for an unmanned ground vehicle. Under its project ‘Analysis and Development of Hybrid Microgid’, the department is working to develop a platform with suitable control technique of bringing AC and DC distribution system on a single platform. After completing the simulation work, the department is in the process of procuring the required components. The projects received have been funded by agencies like UGC, DST etc.

» Department of MathematicsThe department boasts of the extensive research on ‘Algorithm Analysis’ and ‘Statistical Computing’. Research is also being done in financial mathematics and sta-tistical mathematics. ‘Music analysis’ is the other arena that puts into application the techniques of Statistics to analyse and understand the therapeutic effects of Hindustani Music. A medical team also works in RIIMS, that is working on the use of music in brain therapy. « A REJUVENATED CAMPUS

    « RUN UP TO BITOTSAV’19

Every major university across the world has its own distinctive modus operandi of keeping its students en-grossed in college activities. One space, perhaps, where all the people running these gigantic educational insti-tutes agree on, is the organization and student super-vised conduction of college fests. And for the right rea-sons, college fests are a classic means of breaking the hackneyed routine of classes and letting yourself loose for once or maybe twice a year. No matter from where you belong, there is always that something special about the fests that your own institute organizes.

After the successful organization of Pantheon, the tech-nical fest, and VAJRA, the sporting extravaganza, BIT Mesra prepares for its cultural fest, BITOTSAV. “BI-TOTSAV is an affluent celebration of the rich cultural heritage that resides in our country. It is an attempt to revel in the euphoric essence of India’s cultural poten-cy. BITOTSAV has a plethora of events to realize its cause of bringing students from all spheres and from all places, together, to enjoy culture while supporting something of societal importance.” – Team BITOTSAV.It is on these lines, that the foundation of one of the largest cultural celebration in Eastern India was laid down several years ago. This time, 28 years since its inception, it has come leaps and bounds and is one of the most sought-after events that the college students

around the country aspire to be a part of. Our campus has witnessed some of the most prolific performers that include a star-studded slew of Bollywood talent. We have seen a variety of performances, from Salim-Su-laiman and Farhan Akhtar to the scintillating beat mu-sic of the Sunburn Campus, from the soulful music of Kailasa and Jal to the Bollywood mesmerising tunes of A-listers in the form of Sunidhi Chauhan, and Amit Trivedi. And that’s not all, the grandiose of BITOTSAV has always been exemplified by its theme and its social cause and campaigns, and of course, the huge variety of the events themselves.

With BITOTSAV’19 drawing ever closer, let’s take a look at what we have in store this year. The fest marked its grand return with the theme release event back in No-vember 2018. The theme for this year is, “A Celebration of Cultures: Colours of Asia”. With this theme, the scope is huge, both for the organizers and the participants. It deviates from the dull and trite theming scheme of In-dian cultural fests and rises to International standards. It aims at bringing together different cultures residing in the continent and exposing them to the grounds of el-oquence and magnificence. In order to accomplish this task, Team BITOTSAV’19 has worked and is still work-ing tirelessly in the months leading up to the mega-fest. The first event of a series of pre-events was the celebra-

tion of Makar Sankranti at the Upper Lawn. The kite flying competition ‘Kai Po Che’ was a massive success as students and teachers flocked together in tradition-al attires for the event. This event was soon followed by a weekender, ‘Aagaz’. Students gathered in numbers to witness the various bands of the college performing at the IC Arena in what was an amazing musical dis-play. In the subsequent weekender, ‘Udghosh’, the stars for the Heritage Nite, Band Nite and EDM Nite were revealed. The crew of stars included the famous poet, Amandeep Singh, the bands Naalayak and Moong-phali, and world-renowned EDM artists DJ NYK and DJ Candice Redding. The anticipation leading up to BITOTSAV reached its zenith at ‘Sparsh’, the final weekender where the Pro-Nite artists were revealed: the scintillating duo Sachin-Jigar and the melodious singer, Shalmali Kholgade. The next day, BITOTSAV LIVE was organized at Nucleus Mall, Ranchi. It was the perfect event that opened the doors of BITOTSAV to the audience in Ranchi.

BITOTSAV is a manifestation of joy, a brilliant plat-form to exhibit one’s talent and to explore one’s latent abilities. It is the culmination of the planning and efforts of students across the college, belonging to different branches and batches, who work round the clock to organize this colossal event. Over the years, it has grown to become the cultural identity of the col-lege. As the grandeur of BITOTSAV keeps on grow-ing, this year’s BITOTSAV is set to be majestic: bigger and better than ever before. With enthralling events, mesmerizing nights, enticing performances by prom-inent celebrities, and a whole lot of dance and music, BIT Mesra is all set for BITOTSAV ‘19 which will be held from 15th to 17th February.

Marios Tsatsos, a Doctor of Philosophy in Theoretical Physics, is a published researcher, international trav-eller and consultant. He cares about both dissemina-tion of fundamental scientific knowledge and business practices and has recently commenced the blog atom-genius.com.

    Q. You describe yourself as a ‘result-oriented tech-sav-vy network-loving innovative atomic physicist and quantum scientist’. How important is it to be result-ori-ented?As a PhD student in theoretical physics, I was strug-gling to grasp all these new ideas, catch up with the new trends in the field, be competitive and learn as much as possible. Eventually, I failed – and I am happy that I did so. Later in my career, inside and outside aca-demia I came to realize that our values as scientists and humans working towards a goal are immense, beyond the grades or awards one achieved in school. There are a plethora of problems waiting to be solved out there and each one of us can be significant, important and helpful in innumerous ways. Start by helping and not asking. See, being oriented towards results is vital for me. It condenses life lessons and a stance towards life: your career (and life) is not about what you can obtain;

it is about what you can give.

    Q. How important is learning and discovering as a student of science?Learning, as I said, is vital. I consider it as one of the most beautiful activities in which young or elder men always engage. Personally, what I stand for is charm-ingly summarized in Bertrand Russell’s famous mes-sage for the future generations: “When you are study-ing any matter or considering any philosophy, ask yourself only what are the facts and what is the truth that the facts bear out. Never let yourself be diverted either by what you wish to believe, or by what you think would have beneficent social effects if it were believed. But look only, and solely, at what are the facts.”

    Q. How do you think ‘Physics’ can be promoted and students can be convinced of the huge expansion of knowledge it offers?Theoretical physics and physics, in general, is beauti-ful and fun on its own merits. However, I believe, peo-ple (students, scientists and the general public) will enormously benefit when they realize the fact that the gigantic technological progress that we are currently enjoying would not have been possible if we would have not arrived at the revolutionary ideas that Phys-ics has offered us in the past century. In other words, we need to motivate people to study both the theory behind but also the applications and the history of the big discoveries. It is the remedy in today’s generalized ‘blissful ignorance’.

    Q. You’ve done your Bachelors, Masters and PhD in three different countries. How was this experience?Surprising, alluring and rewarding. I was blessed to be able to travel, interact and integrate into different scientific and local cultures and learn valuable les-sons, both on the technical and social side. Travelling and living abroad, while keeping your antennas all ac-

tive, is something that I recommend to any young (or not) student.

    Q. How do you perceive the efficiency of the educa-tion system in different environments and cultures? Which one is your favourite, personally? It is hard to discern and pick up one. Surely, Europe has set a robust educational framework. Students have access to massive libraries and can interact with leading scientists and keep themselves motivated throughout their studies. However, working in less friendly or newly established research environments offers challenges that can strengthen one’s resilience and focus.

    Q. MOOCs have been trending recently, what would you say about the methodology of education that they promote? Also, do you suggest online courses over the traditional ways?Generally not. I believe the direct contact and expe-rience one gleans in the traditional educational norm is irreplaceable. A good layman-mentor relationship should always be on the core of the education and for-mation of an integral future scientist. That said, today MOOCs and other online sources can be functional too and close the gap between solid ‘old’ knowledge and new trends, technologies and fast-paced infor-mation. After that, integrating a MOOC or other technologies into their daily routine will not be prob-lematic.

    Q. Any message for the students aspiring to become Theoretical Physicists?Theoretical physics offers valuable insight and a close look to the universe’s best-kept secrets. It is difficult, yet a beautiful journey that will, in most cases, carve an individual’s way of thinking for the rest of their lives. This, together with open-mindedness and love for scientific knowledge, applications and results are surely going to assist a successful life and career.
