On May 14th, you’ll be asked to vote to grow the government, or vote to grow the economy

KNOW the facts before you vote! The future of British Columbia rests with the outcome of this election as North Island voters are asked to choose between two drastically different plans. One plan is rooted in spending beyond our means and is vague on details, while the other plan is founded on the principle of spending only what we can afford, and charts a vision for B.C.’s continued prosperity.

Nick Facey• North Island raised.

• Formal education in business, doctoral candidate, University

business instructor.

» Supports responsible resource development and resource jobs.

» Supports staying on path with John Hart Dam rebuild.

» Supports building hospital, and extended care facility as laid

out by local project teams.

Claire Trevena• Background as union activist in Britain, BBC Journalist.

• Achievements during 8 Year as North Island MLA:

» Opposes development of resource jobs.

» Opposes basis for building new hospital, and will likely do

so again for planned Extended Health Facility - placing it at

risk under NDP.

PORT HARDY—North Islanders were urged to pitch in to maintain the shoreline last week as Will Soltau of Living Oceans visited the Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre to talk about the organization’s Clear the Coast program.

The issue of shoreline debris has been in the spotlight recently with predictions that this summer will see an upsurge in detritus from 2011’s Japanese tsunami.

While preparing to collect and dispose of these articles, Soltau also used the additional spotlight to draw attention to the wider problem of ocean waste.

“It is a growing problem,” he said. “From DFO figures, 6.4 million tonnes of marine debris enters the ocean each year.”

The majority of this waste is plastic, he explained, which is broken into small particulates, eventually entering the food chain as it is ingested by marine life.

Living Oceans divides waste into three categories, depending on its behaviour in the ocean.

Sub-tidal waste,

the majority of which is lost or which becomes ‘ghost’ fishing gear, remains below the waves. Soltau explained that, “Lost crab traps continue to fish. One trap works out to 16.9 crabs per year. That’s one trap — there’s thousands of them out there.”

Soltau has been going around to gear shops with wallet cards explaining best practices for equipment.

Surface waste is, in large part, beached and abandoned vessels. Disposing of these vessels was described as, “a bureaucratic nightmare of underlapping

jurisdictions.” Living Oceans is working on a pilot local disposal program which will aid in future costing and disposal methods.

The third category is inter-tidal — the debris that washes up on the shoreline through tidal action.

“This is not a new problem,” said Soltau. “The tsunami event is a blip — we’re faced with the fact that debris is now accumulating on our beaches at an increasing rate.”

The source of the debris does present other issues however, notably the transfer of non-native species to the Canadian coast.

In one example cited by Soltau, a section of dock destroyed by the tsunami washed up on our shores and was surveyed for marine life. Thirty distinct non-local species were discovered, disproving the conventional wisdom that few, if any, would survive the journey across the Pacific.

Living Oceans has experience in dealing with this debris, having held the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup on Malcolm Island

since 2008. Now the organization is seeking more volunteers and more reporting ahead of the expected influx of tsunami debris.

The group’s website contains a sign-up section for those wanting to get involved as well as background information. The site also includes a reporting form for debris. The group hopes to receive reports from the public about where they have seen debris, what kind of debris and so on.

This information will be added to an interactive map, allowing the organization to build a more complete picture of the scale and scope of debris.

Soltau also plans on creating a Facebook group to consolidate and coordinate cleanup efforts.

“Our coast is a pretty unique place,” he said. “It’s a pretty special part of the world and it’s been pretty good to us.

“The question is, do want to leave this legacy to our kids?”

email: [email protected] Warmer weather is here but the sh are being a little bit stubborn on local lakes. River shing has improved and I’m still waiting for the ant hatch. The public boat launches in Campbell River are quite active as the weather turned for the better and anglers are getting out. There are no catch reports from Discovery Pier. Salmon shing will be very good in the next month or so but anglers getting out now have had

little or no luck and have stuck with prawning. Last year Peter Woodward caught a 30 pound spring in the rst week of June. The

winter springs will be caught at Kitty Coleman and Bates

Beach and the sh size goes anywhere from 14 to 30 pounds. Anglers have also had good catches of salmon on the south end of Denman Island and at Deep Bay. Some nice trout are been caught at Roberts Lake trolling along the east side of the lake. This lake is hard to sh at times because of the wind and guys getting out are trolling deep to get to the big ones. The family fun free shing derby will be held Saturday September 21st. If your shing north of Campbell River try Stella Lake, which is located on the Elk Main logging road close to 20 kms off the main highway, this road is rough most of the time and is well, used in summer. Signs are posted along the way and Stella Lake will be a good destination to try shing in weeks to come.

COURTENAY — What do you get when you combine the skills of an overachieving physiotherapist with an astute chartered accountant?

You get The Joint Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre on Eighth Street in Courtenay.

Soon after opening in June 2009, they were busting at the seams; therapists were working compressed hours and space was tight. In this current and difficult economic time with

businesses downsizing, struggling, and even closing, owners Eddy Betinol, orthopedic physiotherapist and Donna Cloutier, chartered accountant with Pateman & Company, have expanded their clinic.

“By Year Three, we started looking seriously at proceeding with an expansion,” Cloutier says.

The vision to expand was always there, however the timing had to be right.

“Our business model has never been about taking another piece of the pie. It is about the services

that are not currently being provided in the Valley,” Betinol says.

The Joint is the first facility in the Comox Valley to offer the Worksafe BC Hand Therapy Program. Injured or post-surgical clients no longer need to travel to Campbell River or Nanaimo for therapy.

Betinol is adding a board-certified clinician for musculoskeletal ultrasound. This service will assist in clarifying the diagnosis and treatment path plan of the client, a first for the Comox Valley.

Before the end of 2013, Betinol will be certified in pain management, a multi-disciplinary post-degree program offered

at the University of Alberta.

“In pain management, when people understand the pain and they learn how to manage it, that adds to their quality of life,” Betinol says.

The Joint was also the first locally to offer intramuscular stimulation (IMS).

Besides offering more services, The Joint has increased in size from 1,600 square feet to 3,800, offering clients a larger gym and floor exercise area, plus additional treatment rooms.

Soon to open (mid-summer) is a physiotherapy pool. Betinol explains that the in-house pool will offer patients flexible scheduling and a greater degree

of privacy during their therapy.

Office manager Jessica Dyck is ecstatic about the expansion.

“We have grown so much in the three years that I’ve been here,” she says. “This is the extra space that we have needed for a long time.”

Betinol and Cloutier credit clients and staff for their success.

They recognize that clients have a number of great clinics to choose from in the Valley and they readily acknowledge “it is a privilege” to treat the clients who have navigated their way to The Joint.

“We are blessed,” Eddy says. “Our front end (staff of five) is unbelievable and our six physios, the exercise physiologist and our massage therapist are amazing.”

The therapists at The Joint are constantly pushing themselves and continuing with their education. Betinol adds that they are passionate in their drive to learn.

Betinol and Cloutier believe in treating clients with compassion and employees with gratitude.

Thank YouWe are humbled by the number of phone calls, emails and cards from friends, family and customers who called to offer their concern and support after Morris' accident on April 13th. A simple "thank you" doesn't seem to be enough, but we're at a loss for words that can express

our sincere appreciation during this difficult time.A heartfelt thank you to Ed Wilcock of E&B Helicopters for taking the lead to locate Morris' group and for your immediate action; we can't

thank you enough; things could have turned out so differently; To the Campbell River Regional Hospital Emergency Staff and Dr Stubbs on duty Saturday night , thank you for taking such good care of Morris and the others from their arrival at the hospital until they were

all discharged or transferred to Victoria and Nanaimo; To Kent O'Neill from The Lodge at Gold River, your friendship, love

and concern means everything to us, thank you for being there; andTo everyone who called, emailed, and faxed, far too many to name personally, we can't thank you enough for all your love and concern, and words of encouragement. We are so fortunate to have such a great support network that is worth it's weight in gold! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the love; it is that love and support that will

help us to heal moving forward.Morris McNally & Sue Rich

CROSSWORD

According to the B.C. Association of Optometrists (BCAO), one in five children has a vision disorder – such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism. Many of them assume that everyone sees the world as they do and have no idea their vision is less than perfect.

A school-age child’s eyes are constantly at work, whether at school or at play.

It’s been estimated that 80 per cent of a child’s learning is based on vision, and several visual skills that adults take for granted must work together so your child can see and

understand things clearly. If any of these skills are impaired, your child will need to work harder, which often leads to headaches, fatigue and, often, an apathetic attitude toward school.

The BCAO reports that one in six school-age children diagnosed with a learning disability actually has a correctable vision impairment.

As you can see, it’s incredibly important to get your child’s vision checked regularly; that’s why annual eye exams are

covered by the B.C. Medical Service Plan for children under the age of 18.

Possible signs of a vision problem include covering or rubbing the eyes, tilting the head (or another unusual posture), losing place or confusing words while

reading and otherwise performing below his or her potential.

If you notice any of these symptoms, book an eye exam with an optometrist.

Even without symptoms your child should have a complete eye exam

at six months, before starting kindergarten and annually throughout the school years to ensure optimal eye health and developmental progress.

One of the reasons I joined the Mosaic team last summer is because it’s a family-oriented practice in a growing community. Pediatric care is something I especially enjoy; if you don’t yet have an optometrist for your child, I’d be happy to help.

Dr. Adam Reid is an optometrist with Mosaic Vision Care in Courtenay. To make an appointment, call 250-334-4512 or visit www.mosaicvisioncare.com.

Arthritis? Asthma? Diabetes? Aches and Pains?Fibromyalgia? Not Sleeping?

Celliant® and Cellitex® latex are revolutionary new technologies that harness the body’s natural energy, as well as infrared light, sunlight, and other lights through the use of optically responsive minerals and fibres. Celliant and Cellitex in the My RecoveryMattress has been clinically proven to increase blood flow and in turn bring needed oxygen to the body. Increased oxygenlevels in the body helps naturally boost recovery and creates the optimal environment to help you feel better, balance bodytemperature and reduce pain.
