D e a r f r i e n d s .

These past two months I have experienced the two extremes of travelling. First, many thousands of miles to the Galapagos for a fabulously interesting five-day tour, a must for nature lovers. It offersthe most incredible sights of wild life, sights that can only be seen inthe Galapagos.

On the other hand, I recently took a 38 minute (!) flight to Cyprus torenew my acquaintance with this island after 15 years. I was reallyamazed at what I discovered: An place that offers all the true andgenuine hospitality of any Greek Island ... magnificent hotels, greatrestaurants, excellent service and, also important of course, very reasonable prices. In fact you can spend three nights at the beautiful 5-star hotel "Coral Beach" in Paphos for $395 bed-cind-breakfast, orfour nights midweek for $444. We also have many other hotels inLimmasol and Aya Napa.

Besides Cyprus, the cheuter companies are offering flights toRhodes, Crete, Palma de Majorca and Samos, plus a host of cheapdeals to London, Paris, Rome and Munich.

This certainly seems to be the year to travel as prices come downdue to the fierce competition amongst airlines. I think that stock exchange problems may also mean a few more empty seats! As usual, my staff and I will be pleased to assist you with arrangingall your travel plans.

Please give us a call or come in and see us.

Best regards.

Transition and continuityresounding success of the recent

South African election and the occur-- L rence of a peaceful transition to democ

racy is sure to have gladdened the hearts of allwho took part. The lines ofSouth African Israelis who decidedto vote, and waited a long time at the Tel Avivshow grounds to do so, bear testimony to a remarkable, enduring connection we have to SouthAfrica and its people. Some voted simply becausethey have family there. Many voted out of concern for the Jewish communityand itsfuture, andothers for the privilege of participating in anelection which many had thought would nevercome, and to thankfully despatch an era and anideology which reflected poorly on us all.In a letter to South African Ambassador Mr Malcolm Ferguson, Telfed's chairman Mr Nick Al-hadeff said: "It gives me great pleasure tocongratulate you, and through you, the new StatePresident Mr Nelson Mandela and the government of South Africa for the dignified, peacefuland statesman-like manner in which the transition to the new democratic South Africa wasachieved ... We at Telfed look forward to thecontinuation of the traditional close ties that existbetween our countries."Telfed magazine would like to join Mr Fergusonin congratulating Mr Mandela and in reaffirmingcommitment to our role in tnaintaining ties be

tween Israel and South Africa. The full copy ofthe letter as well as our "election special" is to befound on page 20.Our cover story this month - the health andlifestyle of South Africans in Israel - is a topic ofenduringlypopularinterest.Weset ourselves thetask of drawing out patterns of work, exercise anddiet and stress, asking ourselves the question:just how fit is the community in Israel? The story was researched by way of a nationwidephone survey. As far as we can establish, such a"vox populi" is a first for Telfed Magazine. Mythanksgo to themembersof the Telfed EditorialCommittee who spent hours calling around thecountry for data and also to those of you whopatiently took the time to answer their questions. Thanks also for the heartening letters, phonecalls and faxes that have been streaming into theoffice concerning the revamped Telfed magazine. Some are reprinted on the letters page. Ourefforts to serve the community comprehensivelyand entertainingly are only just getting into gear.Comments and suggestions are still always welc o m e .

Finally, we're expanding! With the support ofthe Jewish Agency, ten thousand copies per edition of Telfed Magazine will be distributed inSouth Africa over the next few months.

D e a r E d i t o r . . .A pleasure to seeI would like to commend you on the last edition ofTelfed (May 1994). Your articles were interestingand informative. But most important, it was a pleasure to see that you have realized that life in Israelfor South Africans extends beyond Ra'anana, Her-zlia and Ramat Hasharon. For the past 14 years(since we made aliya) we have found the magazineto have been of no i nterest to us, as it catered almostexclusively to South Africans living in the areasmentioned above. Thank you and please continuein your present style.

J u s t a m o m e n tYou are to be commended for the improvedformat of Telfed, showing evidence of muchthought and effort in its production, and beingboth informative and interesting.Nevertheless, our Jewish sensitivities were quitedisturbed by Mr Goodman's article "Just a moment of weakness". If Israel is to be valued forits wonderful beaches and proximity to Europe, one might as well live where one's physical needscan be better gratified. To live in Israel must be viewed a privilege - a

privilege earned by living according to the To-rah's precepts. Any other criteria for being hereforfeits our rights to the land and endangers ourvery existence in Israel.

Each month we wait inpleasant anticipation for a phone call from Sarah, advising us of the venue for our afternoon meeting. Not only do we enjoy the company of ourfriends, we enjoy the entertainment, or a demonstration or music or maybe a sing-a-long, and ofcourse the cake and cookies. Each year the month of Yom Ha'atzmaut is special: Sarah invites us to a luncheon at her apartment.. This time we drank a toast to Israel's 46thanniversary, several of our members were calledto light one of the memorial candles, and welistened to our musician, Ben, who In excellentvoice sang Hebrew and Yiddish melodies. Thenwe enjoyed lunch. These few words are a tribute to Sarah and anexpression of our thanks for her concern for allo f u s .With Zion's greetings

Affordable housingThe biggest problem feeing our olim, apart fromemployment, has always been and remains affordable housing. Many South Africans today prefer to live in the central area of the countrybecause of its proximity to jobs in the city. Formany of them, buying an apartment Is out of theirreach.

In the light of this. T elfed has always been receptive to new housing projeas which could besuitable for our community, taking into accountlocation and price.Over the years many such proposals have beeninvestigated and some have been realised -those promoted byTelfed directly (for exampleKochav Yair and Tzur Yigal) and those in co-operation with private enterprises (for example, the Tel Aviv Machal Shikun. the hostel inAmishav, and the acquisition of apartments forrental).Motivated by our desire to be of service to ourcommunity, Telfed sent out a letter in May toSouth African residents in Israel, informing themof a particular housing project which we felt metour goal of helping olim.Telfed adhered to its policy of not making available its mailing lists to any third party.

Cover Story

After the swinging '70s and theaerobic '80s, we're well into thenourishment 90's, but the questionremains: Just how fit is the SouthAfrican community in Israel?ADAM GORDON reports.

~ irsc the good news: 80 percent of South^ Africans living in Israel are non smokers.

40 percent exercise three or more times aweek. And 65 percent are concerned about majorhealth indicators such as cholesterol and bloodp r e s s u r e .The bad news? 70 percent, no less, are red meateaters. A full quarter of us do no exercise at all.And three and a half percent, yes, a measley threeand a half, are vegetarians. Most claim to eat a lean diet: fish, chicken, vegetables and grains - or at least try to when they arenot "on" caffeine and chees«:ake. But then, ittakes all types: there was a lawyer in his fifties(who declined to be named) who said he was notat all concerned about high cholesterol and highblood pressure. "Instead I eat boerewors!"Is Israel a stressful place to live? This had ourrespondents really thinking and, in the end, theywere split down the middle. Half said yes, half

said no. Most would agreethat the society is in rapidstructural transition, that financial pressures remain adaily concern and that security worries are never farfrom their mind. All beforethey start dealing with theparticular pressures of beingo l i m .Businessman Leonard Sack-stein says: "The business environment in Israel is notrelaxed. There is a lot ofpressure. Israel is reachingthe unenviable status of being on a par with the worst inthe world. The tension levelis as high as you find anyw h e r e . "To unwind, according to therespondents, our communitytypically reads, walks, cooks, watchesTV, listens to music, works in the garden, goes ontiyulim or goes to the beach.T h a t ' s w h e n w e ' r e n o t d e -stressing with meditation, yoga, lovemaking and get-— ting an old-fashioned good

Bernard Hurwitz, a vet says: "Forrelaxation ... I come home.Nadine Chamey of Ra'anana says: "What do I dofor relaxation? Leave the country!"Says Sackstein: "As the economy improves, there

are extra pressures. Lifestyle here is now on amuch higher level than it was. There is a wholenew level of demand for things. There used tobe a laid-back kibbutz attitude chat predominated. But those days are over.

"I don't chink I deal with stress very well. Butrunning (30 to 40km a week) is very importantfor me, and yachting, my hobby, is really a veryrelaxing thing," says Sackstcin. "I never work onshabbat. I used to be shomer shabbat but nowI'm not, but still I don't work." Also I do my bestnot to work at home.News reader Lea Zinder says: "Yes, life in Israelis stressful. After 20 years here I don't getstressed out by little things like the "lack ofmanners" among the Israelis. I now have a son in

''There used to be a laid-backkibbutz att i tude that

predominated. But those daysare over."

"I'm observant, so I observe shabbat, and it is acomplete break for me. Otherwise, to relax I loveto cook, read and of course, watch TV! How fitam I? Well, my kids think I'm a fanatic. I have ahome trainer twice a week. Otherwise all I do iswalk the dog," says Lea."I'm certainly much more health conscious thanI was. When we lived in Berkeley, California, Iwas in an environment where I became veryaware of food, additives, quality of the water andso on. After a lifetime of dieting I try not to diet,

Checklist: Starting a Business in IsraelPublished by Kesselman and Kesselman,Certified Public Accountants, Israel

This very useful book, published by a leadingIsraeli accounting firm, sets out in clear and concise fashion the procedures and options that apply when going into business in Israel. It is thesuccessor to the same firm's publication: Guide toInvestment in Israel, which focuses on taxation andi n v e s t m e n t i n c e n t i v e s . T h e t w o b o o k s s h o u l d b eread in conjunction by those seriously researching Israeli business possibilities. Checklist'\sbasically oriented towards the larger-scale entrepreneur who plans to set up a limited liabilitycompany, but it covers partnerships, joint ventures and foreign companies investing in Israel. It would also be of use to the one-person businesswith a few employees. For South Africans, the most unfamiliar areamight be the Israeli social benefits structure. This obligates an employer to provide for national insurance payments, severance pay, ad

vanced training and annual leave. These supplements can bump up payrolls by up to 35 percentand have varying effects on tax liability. Againstthis there arc employment incentives for firmstaking on new employees. An important chapter is devoted to incentiveswhich are considerable. These include securingApproved Enterprise status, support from theUS- Is rae l B ina t i ona l I ndus t r i a l Resea rch andDevelopment Foundation and from the Officeof the Chief Scientist. The book has an extensive

two-page table of investment and other incentives, ranging from investment in equity to cashg r a n t s .Checklist provides some up-to-date statistics onthe Israel economy and its economic relationswith the European Union and the USA. Amongmany other useful features are sample government forms, a map showing development areas,a list of important offices with telephone numbers and, in most cases, names of contact persons.

Election Special

Pie^ng the waiting game outside the election hall

Our day in the suno it was badly organised. So it was ridiculousthat there was only one polling station forthe whole country. So it was a day of missed

appointments and broken deadlines and sorefeet. Ja, so what?It was the S' African party of the decade, maybeof all time, in Israel. When again would there besuch a chance to connect with old chevra? Tocheck out who didn't go to Australia. To betreated to a familiar SA-style bureaucratic bungle(in English nogal). Or just to stand in the noondaysun with a Castle in the right hand, and burp:"Howzit my China"?They say you never see an orderly queue inIsrael. Not true. On this fine day in April, suddenly there it was. But then, clearly this was notan all-Israeli event. In fact there were so manytourists around the air was, nostalgically, waftingwith fragments of as old, nearly forgotten tongue... "Chantelle! En wat doen JY hierso in Israel?"What was clear was that many people had madea real effort to be standing there, to be part ofhistory, ushering the country into the future.Ulpan student Ryan Heitner said he had spenttwo hours standing up on a bus from Arad, only

to be faced by another bus ride across town andthen ... the queue! "But I'm pleased I came," hesaid. "I wanted to see who was here ... for thev i b e . "

Everyone who stood and waited for hours wasable to tell a story - of broken appointments, phoning in excuses to the boss, arranging forsomeone else to pick the kids up from school.

One man, one vote, onepolling station, no beer.ADAM GORDON took theopportunity to reflect onthe election day in TelAviv, while standing in line. Some were sympathetic to the embassy staffsorganisational effort, most were not. Dani Rak-ofT, a new oleh from Cape Town, spoke for manywhen he said: "It's a disgrace. The whole thingis completely disorganised. People are leaving in

frustration and their votes are lost. It's a tragedy that this should happenon a day as monumental as this. Ifthey can't do things faster inside, why don't they at least send someone out to explain, to say 'vasbytguys, thanks for waiting'. Its justcommon decency."Howard Klevansky, of Jerusalem, originally from Durban, expresseda n o t h e r c o m m o n t h e m e i n t h ecrowd: "There is some weird personal gratification in voting. It is difficult to know where it comes from. But after eight years out of SA I'vegot the 'koach' to come all the wayto Tel Aviv to stand in a queue forthree hours," he said."And it troubles me. To what degreedo I have the moral right to vote for a future I amnot necessarily going to take responsibility for. Idon't have to face the consequences of my vote. But my mother and family are there, and I carewhat happens."

'Tm pleased I came. 1 wantedto see who was here... / came for

the vibe."

Abe and Beryl Margolis, new olim from SeaPoint, now in Kfar Saba, said: "We're votingbecause we want to help the Jewish communityin SA," to which Beryl added: "I've voted manytimes in my life. I never stood so long in a queuei n S A ! "Hillary Oostendorp, a tourist from Cape Town, said: "History is what brings me here. And it'sgood to see so many others taking the trouble to

wait. But I'm disappointed to see a lack of campaigning, and representatives from the parties. There is not enough information about thechoices to prospective voters. No fliers or pamphlets. I wanted to see people asking questionsand those questions being fielded by representa t ives . "After a while the astute queue jumpers got windthat there was a special line inside the buildingfor over 60-year-olds. This, of course, promptedone jokcster to remark; "If you're not 60 already, you will be by the time you reach the front!Inside many "honorary over-60's" had quietlyinfiltrated the special queue. Out comes an embassy official who, in the Old South African bureaucratic tone announces: "This - queue - is -for - those - over - 60 - only, the rest of you, please return - back - to - the - other - line."Nobody budges. There's a short mutual standoff, finally broken by a woman who pipes up; "Really! Is it our fault if we look so young?!"

As the flag came down

Midnight, April 261994: Amidst a large crowdof South Africans in the JohannesburgCivic Centre square, to the harmonious strains ofNkosi Sekeleli Africa, the new brightly colouredflag of South Africa was raised. Minutes earlier, accompanied by a clapping crowd, the old SouthAfrican flag was lowered to "Die Stem".Viva the New South Africa - VIVA, shouted theMC, and the crowd erupted in spontaneous joy, toyi toying, jiving, embracing and kissing oneanother amidst the popping of champagne corks. This was my first experience of theElection '94 carnival. Over the nexttwo days I was to participate in theIsraeli embassy's 20-person observerdelegation - along with thousands ofother observers representing theUN, the Commonwealth, EuropeanCommunity, Church groups etc-toassess the fairness of the election. My specific job during the two dayswas to pop into polling stations in thePWV area without prior warning andto report any irregularities.I chose to spend the first day inSoweto (my first visit to the township). The atmosphere was bothelectric and euphoric. Crowds ofpeople lined the streets, sometimescircling the polling stations in longqueues, patiently waiting to casttheir votes. Nothing, not even hoursin the hot sun would deter them. What impressed me more than anything else was the complete absenceof violence or unrest. The dayseemed almost too important to expend any unnecessary energy onanything else but voting. Even inpolling stations where the doors didnot open until hours after the officialstart of polling, people waited calmlyor simply moved to a nearby station. The large number of policemen andsoldiers on duty stood around talkingto the crowd, enjoying the friendlyatmosphere. So many scenes on that day inSoweto remain with me, but the oneI will never forget is the 92-ycar-old

woman who arrived at thepolling station in a wheelbarrow pushed by her grandson, and after casting her vote said:"I have waited all my life forthis moment. Now I can die!"

Heal th and Beauty

Beware the bronzed lookSummer is here again and, as always, the temptation is to go out and get as bronzed as possible. But health experts warn everyone about the dangers of sun tanning: overexposure to the sunleads to premature aging, a rough leathery skintexture, freckle-like spots of brown pigmentation, pre cancerous skin growths and, most important, skin cancer. If you want a healthy skin, you should forgetabout looking bronzed and rather go for the porcelain look that was popular in the Victorian era.If you must be out in the sun, wear a hat and astrong sunscreen that provides protection fromultra-violet (UV) radiation. At particular risk are those of Celtic ancestry whohave fair skin and freckles; blonde, red or lightbrown skin, blue or green eyes and who bumeasily.Sunscreens are labeled with SPF numbers. Todetermine from the SPF number the degree ofprotection you will obtain from a product, youmust first know how long you can stay in the sunwithout protection before you burn. This iscalled the minimal eruthemo dose.If you can stay in the sun 15 minutes before youbegin to burn, for example, then using a productwith an SPF of 2 would enable you to stay in thesun for 30 minutes before you burn, SPF 4 wouldenable you to stay in the sun for 1 hour, whileSPF 15 would allow you to stay in the sun fora b o u t 4 h o u r s .

Products with high SPF numbers (15 or more)often protect the skin from both UV-A and UV-Br a d i a t i o n .Newer products on the market include cosmetics, lipstick, liquid make-up and body care products that provide protection from the sun.In addition to sunscreens, proper clothing willprovide some protection. In general, the moretightly woven the fabric, the more protection ito f f e r s .

^ Ifyoti want a healthy skin,go for the porcelain lookthat was popular in the

Victonan era''

A light cotton T-shirt has an SPF of about 7,while cotton denim serves as a complete sunblock. Wet clothing that clings to the skin andthinly widely woven material do not providegood protection. Therefore, wearing a T-shirtwhile swimming is inadequate. Also white material transmits UV light.Umbrellas offer some protection. But the ultraviolet radiation can still bounce off surfaces suchas sand and water. Therefore it is important stillto use effective sunscreen.Children should be protected from burning too,for the sake of their skin later in life. It is estimated that childhood protection from excessivesun exposure can prevent 78 percent of the totalexpected lifetime skin damage and associatedrisk of skin cancer.

Tips to protect children include the following:Children should be indoors during the middle ofthe day as this is when sun rays are strongest. When children are outdoors, have them wear sunhats. Look for special sunscreens for use on children. Remember sunscreens offer re la t ive notabsolute protection. Re-apply frequently as sunscreen is diluted by sweating or swimming.

fully understand it, and they would far rathertake advantage of their foreign currency rights toi n v e s t o v e r s e a s .

But, with hindsight being the exact science it is,the hesitators have clearly missed out on somegreat opportunities and rapid growth over thepast few years. And although the Tel Aviv StockExchange is in a down phase now, after a 30percent drop between January and May, it is stillconsidered one of the most attractive "emergingmarkets" worldwide. So is it the time to take theplunge?UP investment advisor Idan Azoulay, who usedto work as a stockbroker in South Africa, says theeconomic indicators show a very solid picture ofgrowth throughout the Israeli economy."The 3.5 percent growth rate is down from previous years but still high compared with other

westem economies. There has been a 7 percentgrowth in the industrial output, a 10.5 percentincrease in exports and a rise of 16 percent inrevenue from tourism. Investment in fixed assets

grew by 17 percent last year and has doubleds i n c e 1 9 8 9 . "

So why then is the stock market down?Says Azoulay: "We must remember that from1988 to 1993 the T.A.S.E. showed an amazingyield-of800 percent. It is only natural that aftersuch an upturn a correction will come. Manyshares soared on the back of general positivesentiment with no economic justification.Yahav investments manager Arik Sorotzkin saysthat, ironically, the completion of the peace accord has had a negative effect on the market. This was because the market was raised last yearby high expectations and now it has becomeapparent that the "peace dividend" is still someway off. But, says Sorotzkin, the steep drop since thebeginning of the year makes it a good time tobuy, looking two to three years ahead. "Stocksarc a lot less expensive and while the short termmay be up-and-down the long term will behigher somewhere, somehow. I feel comfortablewith the price level of many stocks now."'The underlying economy is in good shape, andit will continue to perform in spite of short termdifficulties. Over the next ten years we will seea steady growth rate of around five percent. Thatperhaps won't match certain places in the FarEast, but it is a much less risky investment.Azoulay predicts that "things will get back to

normal" on the T.A.S.E. in the next few months, but advises some precautionary steps. "Thebond market," he says, "ofTers relatively goodyields and a safe haven in these rainy days. Theexpectation of a stronger US dollar makes theGilboa bond a good alternative."Another inves tment veh ic le wh ich shou ld belooked at is the convertible bond market - thereare some very attractiye bonds which are relatively safe investments on the one hand and aregeared to a positive move in the share."In the equity market I suggest that only companies who have shown an improvement in theirpresent performance should be looked at at thisstage," says Azoulay.

B l o c k e d R a n d u n i t t r u s t s■ following the spectacular rise in popularity ofP unit trusts as an avenue for investment, more

and more specialist funds have become available. In this new environment funds have emergeddesigned for the investor with blocked Rands inSouth Afr ica. These unit trusts offer investment in an income-oriented portfolio of SA gilts (governmentbonds).

Due to recent changes in the tax laws, the incomefrom such unit trusts is now tax free for non-South African residents. In the old days emigrants from SA were advised to put their moneyinto tax-free Eskom stock and leave it there, andmost people did just that. The problem is thatsuch long term bonds have been poor performers, particularly in a high inflation environment.Eddie Shapiro, Investment Department Manager at Pioneer, a subsidiary of Old Mutual, says"buy Eskom" was the worst possible advice, given the way the market has turned out: "Thereturns have declined substantially. In a situationof rising inflation the worst investment is a longterm government bond."The problem, previously, with the unit trustroute is that the returns attracted a 15 percentwithholding tax on non-residents.This tax was applied even if the fund's moneywas invested entirely in gilts, which if held privately, would have paid returns to non-residentst a x f r e e .Over the past few years Shapiro and MichaelKatz, a renowned tax lawyer in South Africa, havelobbied to get this inequity in the tax actamended, and eventually new legislation waspassed in August last year allowing income mu-

tual funds the same tax privileges as private inv e s t o r s .

With the legislation have come a number offunds dealing exclusively in gilts (and cash), offering to manage blocked SA money. The principal advantage of these funds is thatthey offer active principal of the blocked portfolio, which is crucial because the bond market isquite volatile in South Africa.Investment broker Geoff Meyer says the fundmanagers are in the position to "constantly monitor the markets and the complicated interest ratepatterns in order to select the best possible combination of high yielding instruments. They canrespond immediately should factors such as political instability, the balance of payments, money supply or inflation change - all of whichwould impact on the gilt market immediately."Funds can also have the advantage of holdingpart of their resources in cash if the situationdemands it. During the recent election one ofthe funds, with a large holding in cash, went upwhile the Eskom 20-year bond went down 15percent over the same period.Investors should however be aware that, unlikewith the Eskom bond itself, the funds don'tprovide a guaranteed return, and this is often amajor concern particularly to retired people whoneed the money to live on. But. says Meyer, a

spread of gilts is an enormously safe investmentand income fund returns have consistentlybeaten those of individual gilts.Another advantage of the funds is that they payquarterly, instead of every six months. This issignificant if the Rand is dropping sharply. Also the funds offer a total system, doing all theadministration required to get the return cashedand into the client's bank account, wherever theyare in the world. So the client is spared fromdealing personally across continents. Also physically drawing the capital to spend in South Africa(subject to Reserve Bank regulations) is administratively very much simpler-just a question ofselling your units. The remittance takes 48h o u r s .

Traded Endowment policiesIn the previous edition of Telfed magazine wefeatured traded endowment policies as an inter--esting new investment vehicle. Policy brokerFrank Taylor has pointed out that annual bonuses are accrued to the insured's account andcan never be lost. An additional terminal bonusis usually awarded at maturity or in the case of aclaim. The return on the investment is not guaranteed, but conservatively estimated to yieldbetween 11 and 14 percent.

Of all the many things thatex-King David boys get upto in life, there can't be too

many chat work as a mango farmer, afarrier and jeep tour guide in Israel.Meet Philip Berghaus, a mangofarmer on moshav Almagor, whos h o e s h o r s e s a l l o v e r t h e n o r t h w h e nhe's not out in his Jeep taking travell e r s a r o u n d t h e G o l a n a n d G a l i l e e .

Philip, an alumni of Potchcfstroomagricultural school, wears a genuinedesert is lander beard and brownedsalt-of-the-earth complexion. Hemade aliyah in 1979 after travellingand working extensively in Israel,Europe, and the US. (He took hisblacksmiths course in New Hampshire and then worked as, amongstother things, a trucker). He has anIsraeli wife and 10-year-old son.The jeep is, well, no limousine. Butthere's really no beating the sun andwind on your face and holding ontothe rails as the willing machine takesyou off the beaten track, straight upand down mountains, where lesserv e h i c l e s f e a r t o t r e a d .

Philip's tours are tailored to suit each party's personal preferences withinthe Ian/Galilee area. He goes wherever you want him to: places likeWadi Samak, the Hexagonal pools, Dolmens, Old Bnei Yehudah, WadiArbel, Gush Halav, Dishon, the Biriya Forests and more.Somewhere in his full schedule Phillip managed to fit in a two year courseon nature in the northern areas of the country, so his guiding credentialsare more than sound. And as the jeep meanders across the countryside,he becomes an absolute mine of information on the landscape, botany, history, water, and bird life. One of the trips special highlights is the tea break. No fourth rateWissotzky dust here - Phillip picks real wild dill and peppermint herbson the side of the road, pops them into a billy can, and you have anotherunforgettable Golan experience. The cost of a tour ranges from NIS 340 for two hours to NIS 750 for a fullday. The jeep accommodates seven people. Night trips can also bearranged.

Ein Avdat is situated at the upper ravine of theZin river, on Ramat Avdat, between the northernand central Negev highlands. The cliffs wereformed when run-off water flowing rapidly after

heavy rains eroded the softer layers ofrock, causing the collapse of the harderlayers above them. The discrepancy oflevels between the Bessor and Zin riverscaused the formation of high waterfallsat the points where they meet. Thesecontinued to deepen over the years, resulting in the formation of steep can-yons, waterfalls and cliffs often tens ofmeters high, as in the case of the EinAvdat canyon.

The springs arc surrounded by fresh vegetation. The green colour merging with the white chalkcliffs creates a spectacular view. The flora in theravine includes cane and reeds. The pools havealgae, and the moist walls have club mosses andferns. Salt bushes and tamarisk grow here too, alongside the rare Euphrates poplars, and thereis a 250-year-old Pistacio tree, which stands asliving proof and relic of a wetter climate whichonce existed there.

Among the animals living in the vicinity are rockpigeons nesting in the natural coves over thebrook, chukar partridges, swallows and vultures. In the rocks one can often catch a glimpse of rockhares, and if you come early in the morning orlate in the afternoon you are likely to meet theibex, a species of wild mountain goat. Those of you keen on difficult hikes areadvised to park at the lower parking lot (you getthere by turning left at the sign to Sde Bokercollege, then follow the road down the hill). From there you begin a short walking trip whichtakes you past the Ein Mor to Ein Avdat pools. Those interested in climbing to the upper part ofthe canyon must walk up the hewn step path, andfrom there along the river bed to the poplar trees,

and up the ladders - to the upper parking lot.My advice, however, is to leave one car at thelower parking lot, and continue the drive alongthe main road to the second entrance to the site.

were. Avdat is an ancient city which was built inthe 4th century BCE by Nabatean travellers, asa way station along the "spice route". The townwas established for the purpose of offering protection and refreshment for those carrying rareand precious commodities from the Far East toEurope, via the Negev. Today we can see here areconstructed Roman villa, a Byzantine citadel, theremains of two impressive churches, a wine press,a pottery workshop, bathhouse, roman tower, anda few caves with interesting reconstructions such asthe cave of the wine merchant and one used for thestorage of agricultural products.

This leads to the upper parking lot, from whereyou begin an exciting climb down the canyon. The trip is suitable for all ages, on conditionyou're not scared of heights. I've been there withyoung kids as well as with "golden oldie" hikers. It's an experience you won't forget in a hurry. At the end of the trip, drivers go back in the carwhich was so cleverly parked at the end point of theroute, while the rest of the bunch use the toilets, drink some water, and plan their next trip...If you're not too tired, continue along the Be'erSheva - Mitzpeh Ramon - Eilat road {no. 40) toAvdat, situated a mere 8 km from where you

How to get there; It's easy. Get to Be'er Sheva and continuefor about 50 km on the road to MitzpehRamon. Follow the sigrts to Sde Boker if youwant to see Ben Gurion's hut, tomb andcollege, and continue to Ein Avdat as recommended ^ove. Both Avdat and EinAvdat are national parks, so be ready to payan entrance fee. Have a nice trip.

Employment Feature

Riding off into the sunriserecent expansion in Is

rael's economy is mind boggling. The peace process

has had a tremendous positive impact on foreign investment in thecountry and we can confidently expect that this upward swing in theeconomy will be the pattern of thecoming years. The Economist, a British weekly, ina recent special issue on Israel, described our economy as being "acombination of that of a mature industrial state with the ability to leaplike an Asian tiger towards developing markets."One only has to look at the remarkable changesin Israel's export patterns over the past two yearsto see that this description is clearly reflected inthe decline of overall exports to traditional markets in the US and western Europe and theincrease in exports to South-East Asia and EastEurope.A few headlines from articles appearing in one ofIsrael's financial newsletters clearly substantiatethis trend: "Beijing Textiles To Manufacture InIsrael" ... "Communications Delegation VisitsTaiwan To Develop Joint Ventures" (in themeantime Bezek, Israel's telephone company issetting up a telecommunications network inHungary!) ... "Dead Sea Cosmetic Factory ToEstablish Sister Company In Japan" ... "Tempo(Soft Drink & Beer Manufacturer) Taps TheU k r a i n e " . . .

The peace process and burgeoningIsraeli trade with Eastern Europeand the Far East has opened up awhole new job market for peoplewith computer and technicalbackgrounds, reports Telfed'sHead Employment CounsellorN A R D A K O R A K I N .

Taste of Israel, a successful sweets and chocolatefactory owned by South Africans hasalso successfully entered the East European market. BurgerRanch, another South African success story, with54 franchise operations, now has an outlet inHungary!By entering these new markets, Israel has beenable to achieve growth rates which would havebeen impossible to attain in established overseasmarkets. The export emphasis is on goods andservices that are high-tech and expertise-oriented. This development has in turn opened upa whole new job market for people with computer-related backgrounds, engineering or business degrees. There are jobs for computerprofessionals at all levels: technical writers, programmers, systems analysts, marketing personnel and business managers. The government has come to realise that the key

Inc o m e f r o m o v e r s e a s t o u r i s t sreached over 2,25 billion dollars inlast year. New hotels are beingbuilt in all parts of Israel and international hotel chains have and arestill entering the Israeli market. The job opportunities in this Heldare vast and varied, taking into account that people are needed inthe planning and constructionstages and later on in management, maintenance and servicefi e l d s .In the building industry, the massaliyah of the past 4 years whichincreased our population by 10percent has doubled the housingconstruction industry. Theclosureof the administered territories has, while dampening the industrysomewhat, also created a dire needfor workers in the building trade, forcing the Minister of Labour togive the okay for 15 000 foreignworkers to be brought in. The firstwork team of 500 arrives in Junefrom - where do you think? China!

one day told me that I was running in theRa'anana 10km race - no arguments, no discussions. Then the following week the RamatHasharon 10km race. I thought that was that - ashort, sweet running career, but it was not to beas I was then told to report to the Saturdaymorning running group at 7:00am. If running ismadness, this proved it!The Saturday became every Saturday with theRa'anana Road Runners (much to my wife's dismay) - a group of runners doing it for the love ofrunning - is this what they call love? After awhile, the runs became longer and faster andeasier, and competing against oneself the bestidea o f a l l .

Then, late last year, Arthur Lipschitz suggestedthat we do the London Marathon. Brian Braudeand Max Moss had already said yes. I gave onlya tentative yes as it would mean extensive training, increasing our running time and distance, and I had plans to be overseas for a full month, amonth before the marathon. All other workout programmes were put aside, itwas all ninning and diet - cutting down and eventually cutting out dairy products, eating mainlycarbohydrates, and bananas, bananas, bananas. Finally, on Wednesday April 13, Melanie and Iarrived in London for the final countdown. TheLipschitzes arrived that night. The next few dayswere spent on light running in the mornings (so

Saturday lunch time we ail went to the Barbican for their famous Pre-run Pasta Party -only 80,000 people expected (each runnergets two tickets). So many people, such incredible organisation... amazing.Sunday dawned cold and cloudy. After a breakfast of toast, honey and fruit juice we foundourselves on the tube in our running gear. AtCharring Cross, we changed to a special race trainto Blackheath Common, and there we foundhigh excitement.

R a ' a n a n a R o a d R u n n e r sRa'anana Road Runners was started almost15 years ago by South Africans HaroldBrozin and Arthur Lipschitz. They had metone day while on a run and decided to continue running together during the week andon a Saturday morning. They would meet atHarold's flat - and this became the core ofthe running group. The RRR has now expanded to about 50runners (over half of them South Africans)that meet every Saturday morning at theparking ground of Hamashbir in Ra'anana at7.00am. Every week there are about 30 runners who run anything from 10 to 20kms.During the week there are a number ofsmaller groups that run - some in the earlymornings and some in the late afternoons. The club is very informal and there are nomembership fees. Says Arthur: "We allcome together for the love of running andwe want to welcome any new runners thatwould like to participate. There is no needto panic about us being "too good" or running "too fast". There are always runnersthat run short and slow and others that runlong and fast - and in-betwecners.For more information call Arthur Lipschitzat 09-901252.

There were crowds in their tens of thousands,TV and radio crews, even helicopters with cameras overhead - and a freezing wind.Just before the start we put our outer clothing intothe kit bags given to us, and onto trucks speciallydesignated to cany it to the finish for us.And so we waited ...As it was so cold, I wore a T-shirt under myrunning vest, a pair of my wife's cut-ofT pancy

hose over my shorts, socks on my hands as gloves,a big plastic bin bag with a hole cut out for myhead and arms, and a plastic shower cap on myhead to keep out the wind. Believe it of not, I wasnot the only one dressed like this! As I warmedup along the run, I discarded layers. The route was like a cooks tour of London. Can

you imagine a long running snake going past theCutty Sark in Greenwich, over Tower Bridge, around the Isle of Dogs, along Canary Wharf (thenew docklands area) then through the TowerBridge again, along the Embankment, past BigBen and the Houses of Parliament, into BirdcageWalk, past Buckingham Palace, to a spectacularfinish halfway down the Mall. Here we were each given a medal with a handshake, a bag full of goodies. The wives were verypleased to see us, in one piece and on our feet. The organisation en route was faultless - waterpoints every mile, Isostar stations every fivemiles, first aid, police, marshals, no bikes, nodogs, no roller blades. In short an outstandinglywell planned meeting. What a feeling to have achieved something likethis (at our age, to say the least) after months ofhard training. Next stop? finally withdrawn from most of the GazaStrip and Jericho as Israel and the PLO implement the first phase of the Oslo accord. However,as difficult as the last seven months of negotiations have been, the next phases of the accordwill probably be evenm o r e s o .

In their approach to theOslo accord Israel and thePLO are separated by aconceptual divide. It isclear to most Israelis thatthe accord, by recognizingthe PLO and by acceptingC h a i r m a n A r a f a t a s t h ec h i e f P a l e s t i n i a n i n t e r

The conceptual divide rests on divergent popular expectations. Palestinians in the West Bankand Gaza are impatient. After 27 years of occupation they are anxious to see the Israelis leave. The Israelis, after decades of conflict, seek the

phases of the Oslo accord. The period after the implementation of the Gaza-Jericho withdrawal is,

therefore, fraught with uncertainty. It is not clearhow Israel will go about re-deploying its forces inthe West Bank, as foreseen in the Declaration ofPrinciples, while seeking simultaneously to protect the Israeli settlements that are spread allo v e r t h e a r e a .Israel's readiness to redeploy would presumablybe affected by the measure of control demon-

strated by the PLO in Gaza and Jericho and bythe level of terrorism in the rest of the West Bankand in Israel. The PLO and Hamas do not seekconfrontation with each other. As matters standat present they would prefer an agreement andmodus Vivendi, based on a division of power andinfluence in the institutions of autonomy.Yet Arafat could be faced with the di lemma of

having to jeopardize an understanding withHamas, and his domestic stature, if the PLOresorts to force to prevent attacks on Israelis.Complying with Israel's interests may prove to

be too ta l l an order forArafat. But to keep theprocess going, he mayh a v e n o c h o i c e .

might accord too much influence to opponentsof the process. On the other hand, In circumstances of political and economic progress, elections could serve as a vehicle to reinforce the

leadership and legitimacy of the supporters qfthe process.Elections In the West Bank and Gaza would notonly be an important exercise in democracy buta mechanism to transform the PLO into an es

sentially West Bank/Gaza organization. For decades the PLO was an organization primarilyrepresenting the Palestinian Diaspora constituency, for which Israel has no real solution. The shift of the center of gravity or Palestinianpolitics into the West Bank and Gaza, the movement of at least part of the external PLO establishment into the area of Palestinian autonomy, and the holding of elections there would all serveto redefine the Palestinian question as an essentially West Bank/Gaza problem. This Is a muchmore manageable prospect from Israel's point ofv i e w .As difficult as the road ahead may seem, neitherthe Palestinians nor the Israelis have viable alternatives to a negotiated settlement. This remainsthe main incentive for them to make a serious

effort to keep the opponents of the negotiationsat bay and prevent them from poisoning theatmosphere of reconciliation.A lot has happened recently indicating an Israeliintention to shift its negotiating priority to Syriaafter the implementation of the Gaza-Jerichoagreement. A breakthrough on the Syrian trackmay very well give the necessary renewed impetus to the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations. Itcould propel them beyond the obstacles theyface at present and thus pave the way for themuch desired comprehensive settlement.

Elections in Gaza-Jericho couldserve as a vehicle to reinforce theleadership and legitimacy of thesupporters of the peace process.

A powerful Israel can afford to take risks forpeace. We should therefore look beyond theshort and medium term drawbacks, to the longerterm, of an Israel at peace with its neighbours ina stable and prosperous region. Israel owes itabove all else to its own sons and daughters topursue, with strength and caution, every path toa peaceful resolution of the conflict.

U n d e r t h e U m b r e l l a sCafe 55, situated under umbrellas on Piazza LevHa'ir overlooking the main road in HodHasharon, is fast becoming a gathering place foryoung and old.The coffee shop was opened in 1992 by Geoffand Richella Mallach, and last year they werejoined in the venture by Mark Margolls and hiswife Janine. They specialize in good old fashioned Anglo-Saxon food and generous "South African style"helpings, all kosher.Geoff and Richella made aliyah in January 1988.Before opening Cafe 55, they worked at BurgerRanch for four years. Mark ran the Caponcrorestaurant in Sea Point for three years prior tomaking aliyah last year. He received his early

A n a r t i s t l o o k s a tS o u t h A f r i c aI came to live in Israel in 1961 and that was moreor less supposed to be that. For eighteen years Ididn't return and my family visited me from timet o t i m e .

Then, when my mother almost went blind aboutfour years ago, I started visiting the land of mybirth once more. I went during Succot, in anOctober when it rained and rained and rained. Itook a bus tour around the Cape Peninsular andit rained so much that we could see absolutelynothing. So this year I decided to try summer time, Chan-nukah in fact, for another visit to my mother (whois doing remarkably well under the circumstances.)

The Hex River Mountaujs

And I did something quite unusual and extravagant for me. I took an organised tour along theGarden Route, with a guide and driver. Therewere ten of us tourists, six English ladies, oneyoung American and a German couple. Just tenof us in a bus built for 60 people - testimony tothe depressed state of South African tourism. Was I afraid, a womanalone, to go runningaround SA? No , no t

really. I have been living in Jerusalem toolong.W e h a d l u n c h i nS w e l l e n d a m : c h e e s eand ham sandwiches(No ham please, I'm avegetarian). So, rounda b o u t S w e l l e n d a mthe bus would not pullup the mountain. TaniaraRoseT h e n a l o t o f c h a t t e r

in Afrikaans between the driver and the guide, which I translated for the group! No the bus wasno good, we would have to wait for another bus.So we waited in a type of Baghdad Cafe for fivehours and we all got to know each other very well. The thing that really bowled me over was theincredible beauty of the country. I couldn't getover how green it was, how high the mountainswere, how much water there was, the flowers -thousands of varieties, every kind of Protea youcould imagine, and even a squirrel or two.In all, I did much of a trek familiar to many SouthAfricans: Oudtshoorn, Cango Caves, the ostrich

farm, the Wilderness, the green mountains thickwith hundreds of kinds of foliage. And the sea!Oh the beautiful sea!The scenery was quite breathtaking. The Tsitsi-kama forest: tall, tall trees fighting each other forspace and light. Storms River, where you lookdown and see water at the bottom of the imposing mountains. Believe me, I have travelled tomany places but nowhere can compare with thenatural beauty of South Africa.I flew to Johannesburg from Port Elizabeth. Mycousin bought some books on the Garden Route, saying: "Here are some souvenirs for you."I brought them home and. putting them togetherwith my visual memories and photographs, Ibegan to paint and paint all that I had seen.

Kilim carpets make a debutThe Kilim carpet, once the forgotten stepsister to the grander Persian carpet, is making its debut at a new Kilim gallery in TelA v i v .

Gallery owner Skip Treisman, who startedmarketing the carpets three years ago fromhis home in Manofi says the merits of the flatweave Kilims are only now starting to berecognised in Israel.Treisman's gallery in Neve Tzcdek is, hesays, "not a carpet shop!" The idea is topromote kilims as art. Kilims typically contain symbolic expressions, motifs, symbolsof goddesses and animals. They are handmade by the nomadic tribes of Turkey, theCaucuses, Iran and Afghanistan. They usedto be an expression of wealth among thesec o m m u n i t i e s ."Kilims have gained in popularity in the

west in the last few years. They have beenwell regarded in South Africa for somet i m e " .

Treisman, who qualified as an architect attheTechnikon in the 1960's, is also planninga series of lectures on kilims at the gallery.
