Cost effective assessment of the commercial attractiveness of IP

Do the right things How do we assess the commercial merit of an opportunity and we are capable of

commercialising them? How do we decide with our limited resource on which opportunities to focus on? How do we ensure that we exploit any opportunity to its greatest potential?

Do things right How do we undertake the assessment in a timely and cost effective manner? How do we ensure that we have real insight and intelligence on the opportunity?

Data Information Insight

Page 5: “ IP M a n a g emen t @ Universities ” Istanbul, May 23 to 25, 201 3

But ...

Data-information-insight is only of value if it allows you to make a better decision

The more detailed / specific the data = greater the cost

True insight only can be only be obtained by interacting directly with the market

IP Pragmatics’ assessment methodologies

1. New opportunity assessment: What is the commercial merit of a new opportunity and how can we best

exploit it?

2. Portfolio assessment: Which of the opportunities in our portfolio should we focus on?

3. Capability assessment: Where are the largest commercial opportunities within the research

group, institute, university etc?

Key message:

The earlier you can effectively interact with the market the sooner you can start to genuinely understand the value of what you have ...

Who will buy it? Why will they buy it? How much will they pay? How many will they buy? What are you competing with? etc.
