A. Use the conditional of “poder.”

B. Use the full verb "haber" after the use of "podria."

C. Use a past participle.

It looks like this:

“podria” + “haber” + a past participle

Vamos a tomar el ejemplo mas famoso del mundo.

You could have done that.

Podrias haber hecho eso.

Juana could have read the book at her office.

Juana podria haber leido el libro en su oficina.

The employees could have done a better job.

Los empleados podrian haber hecho un mejor trabajo.

This Spanish course couldn’t have been better!

¡Este curso de espanol no podria haber sido mejor!

POREJEMPLO

yo podria

tu podrias

usted, el, ella podria

nosotros podriamos

Como formar “could have”

A. Here are some greetings and closings...

“Dear”...

“Estimado” if a man “Estimada” if a woman “Estimados” if more than one man or a mixed group “Estimadas” if more than one woman “To whom it may concern” “A quien interese” “Sincerely” “Sinceramente” “Atentamente” (“Atentamente” is more common.)

“With love” “Con amor” “Con carino”

“Hugs and kisses” “Besos y abrazos”

B. Here is some general advice about writing letters and emails in Spanish.

• Follow the same structural rules that you use in English.

• If you are writing a business letter and don't know the person well, use "usted" rather than "tu."

• Follow the same rules of etiquette that you would use in English.

• Learn how to use capital letters correctly.

C. If you’re verbally giving your email address to someone in Spanish, spell out the letters. You can find the Spanish alphabet in Appendix C at the end of this manual.

D. To say “@” in Spanish, say “arroba.”

To say “.” in Spanish, say “punto.”

To say “com” in Spanish, say “com.”

My email is... [email protected] It would be said...rgonzalez...arroba...spanishpower...punto...com (This is not Ricardo’s e-mail address)

When to use capital letters

There are a few things to know here.

• English uses capitalization more frequently than Spanish. Because ofthis it is easier to learn what not to capitalize in Spanish rather than learning what to capitalize.

• If it’s not on the following list that tells you what not to capitalize, then do what you would do in English.

• “en minuscula” means “in small letters,” and “en mayuscula” means “in capital letters.”

Here are the times to leave the words “en minuscula.” In other words, here are the times that you do not capitalize a word in Spanish that is normally capitalized in English....

Measurements

I just want to mention here quickly that in Appendix D of this manual there is a great section on communicating different measurements. I think that it would be very helpful for you to begin learning how to give measurements properly.

Also, in regards to measurements, there is one word that is really important to understand and it is the word “medio.”

“Medio” means “half” and can be used either in the measurement of things or also in time, when talking about “half an hour.” Here are a few examples of this, so that this is clear for you....

Half an hour Media hora

In that "medio" is an adjective and "hora" is feminine, you change "medio" to "media" in this instance.

Half a cup Media taza

The same thing applies here. "Taza" is feminine so you change "medio" to "media."

Half a glass Medio vaso

In this case "vaso" is masculine so you leave it "medio."

There is one fun thing that is used as an expression with “medio” and it is the saying, “media naranja.” Literally, this means “half an orange.” As an expression it refers to your sidekick or your spouse.

"Cecilia es mi media naranja."

Another common expression is “medio, medio” which is used to say either “half way” when talking about a job not being done well or to mean “so, so” when talking about how someone feels.

"Rafael hizo ese trabajo medio, medio."

¿Como esta hoy? Medio, medio porque perdi mi trabajo.

Some people confuse the words "medio" and "mitad." The difference is that "medio" is used to give measurement and means "half," and "mitad" is used to express the idea of "being half way done with something" or "in the middle of something."

Ellos estan a la mitad del proyecto.

We are in the middle of this lesson.

Estamos a la mitad de esta leccion.

The children are half way done with the game.

Los ninos estan a la mitad del juego.

You can see that you say “a la mitad” to say in the middle of something. There is more to the use of “medio” and “mitad,” but for now that will allow you to express most things correctly.
