Feast of the Discovery of St. Mary’s Box According to tradition,
while en route to Jerusalem on a pilgrimage, two Greek princes come
across a chest that once belonged to St. Mary. In Galilee, they see
a large crowd gathered in front of a Jewish woman’s house. They
inquire and find that the sick are being healed due to the
inexplicable power of the chest. The princes bring the box to
Constantinople and present it to the Patriarch, who places it in
the Church of St. Mary. The Patriarch then establishes the Feast of
the Discovery of St. Mary’s Box. The Armenian Church celebrates
this feast upon the order of the Catholicos Simeon from Yerevan,
who accepted this tradition from the Greek Orthodox Church in the
late 18th century.
Feast of the Holy Translators St. Sahak and St. Mesrop On
Thursday, June 25th, our church celebrated the feast of the Holy
Translators. Catholicos St. Sahak Partev and Archimandrite St.
Mes-rop (Vardapet) Mashtots are the founders of Armenian literature
and ecclesiastical bibliography. Following the creation of the
Armenian Alphabet, St. Sahak and St. Mesrop opened a school for
translators in the city of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin). There they
begin the translation of the Holy Bible into Armenian and did it so
perfectly, that centuries hence the Armenian Translation is called
the “Queen Translation of the Breath of God”. The first sentence
translated from the Holy Bible is the opening verse of the Book of
Proverbs: “To know wisdom and instruction, to per-ceive the words
of understanding”. St. Mesrop Mashtots passed away in Vagharshapat,
and was buried in his home village of Oshakan. According to
tradition, during the entire journey of transferring the remains of
St. Mesrop to Oshakan, a canopy of light fell upon the pilgrims and
accompanied them until they reached the tomb. The Church of St.
Mesrop Mashtots, which exists to this day, was built over his
grave.

Today, please take a moment to remember in your prayers Lucine
Adourian, Arshaluys Kaleli, Gale Perzigian,
Catherine Papalian, Dorothy Koresian as well as all the sick and
recovering members
of our community. May God touch His faithful servants with His
healing hand, and
grant them good health & recovery. Please inform Der Hayr if
you have friends or family who are suffering
any physical or spiritual distress and are in need of prayer,
and he will add them to his prayer list where they will be
remembered before “the Holy and
Immortal Lamb of God” during the Eucharist. We all need prayer –
both to say for others and to be said for us.
Let us on this day remember in our prayers all fathers,
grandfathers, Godfathers, and reverend fathers, asking God to give
them the strength to meet their responsibilities and the challenges
of each day with the help of our Lord’s merciful love and
guid-ance.
As we read in the Bible, “keep your father’s commandment and
forsake not your mother’s teach-ing. Bind them always on your
heart; fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide
you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they
will speak to you.” (Proverbs 6:20-22).
Fuller Center for Housing in Armenia (FCHA) celebrated their 5th
year anniver-
sary in 2013. This commemoration marked an important milestone
not only for the
FCHA, but also for the Republic of Armenia. Since its inception
in 2008, FCHA
has built or renovated hundreds of safe and decent homes for
needy families in
remote regions of Armenia.. The anniversary also marked the
completion of its
250th home. During the summer of 2013, this home (now the
residence of the
Margaryan family in the village of Ujan) was dedicated and
blessed by local
clergy. Members of St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church
in White Plains,
NY sponsored the construction of this house. Dedicated and
faithful Parish mem-
bers, inspired by (the late) Harry Keleshian, have set a goal of
“10 houses in 10
years”. Right on track, 2016 will mark completion of St. Gregory
the Enlightener’s
5th sponsored house since fundraising began 5 years ago!
Everyone is invited to join us at our annual All-American BBQ to
benefit FCHA

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS
The first reading is from the Letter of Paul to the Romans
8:31-10:4 What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who is
against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us
all, will he not also give us all things with him? Who shall bring
any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies; who is to
condemn? Is it Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the
dead, who is at the right hand of God, who in-deed intercedes for
us? Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall
tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness,
or peril, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being
killed all day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who
loved us. For I am sure that nei-ther death, nor life, nor angels,
nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor
powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
The second reading is from the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ
according to Matthew (13:24-30)
Our Lord Jesus Christ:
Another parable he put before them, saying, “The kingdom of
heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field;
but while men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among
the wheat, and went away. So when the plants came up and bore
grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the
householder came and said to him, `Sir, did you not sow good seed
in your field? How then has it weeds?' He said to them, `An enemy
has done this.' The servants said to him, `Then do you want us to
go and gather them?' But he said, `No; lest in gathering the weeds
you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until
the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather
the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather
the wheat into my barn.'”
