Stage 1: The Blender

The Players: Mouth – Mechanical

breakdown Salivary Glands –

chemical breakdown Esophagus - transport Stomach – complete

breakdown

- Mouth: The Pulverizer, big pieces into little pieces

- Salivary Glands: secrete enzymes in saliva

- Esophagus: lined with smooth muscle and mucus.

- Stomach: secretes HCl and digestive enzymes. Contracts and churns to aid in digestion

Esophageal sphincter

Stage 2: The Filter

The Player: Small Intestine

Duodenum : Adds bile from bile duct, more digestion (10 inches)

Jejunum: Nutrient absorption (3 feet)

Colon– Water absorption. Bacterial digestion = vitamins and methane.
