ภเขาแหงพระวหารของพระยาเวห จะถกตงขนเหนอยอดภเขาทงหลาย

และจะสงกวาบรรดาเนนเขา นานาชาตจะหลงไหลมาทภเขาน

ชนหลายชาตจะมาและกลาววา มาเถด เราจะขนไปยงภเขาของพระยาเวห

ไปยงพระวหารของพระเจาของยาโคบ แลวพระองคจะทรงสอนวถทางของพระองคใหเรา

เราจะไดเดนตามทางมรรคาของพระองค เพราะวาบทบญญตจะออกมาจากศโยน

และพระวาจาของพระยาเวห จะออกมาจากกรงเยรซาเลม (อสย.2:2-3 )

ขาพเจาไดศกษาเรยนรเกยวกบพระวรสารนกบญมทธวและเชอมโยงกบพระ

คมภรภาคพนธสญญาเดมลกซงขนท�าใหเขาใจและรกการอานพระคมภรมากขน

โดยน�ามาประยกตใชในการสอนและแบงปนใหกบนกเรยนและเพอนครในโรงเรยน

2.ประชาชน (The People)

ไดแลกเปลยนเรยนรกบเพอนๆทแตกตางวฒนธรรมมาจากหลากหลายประเทศใน

กลมทEcceHomo

ไดสมผสการด�าเนนชวตดวยความศรทธาของประชาชนชาวอสราเอลทมแตกตาง

ในศาสนาแตสามารถอยรวมกนไดดวยการเคารพซงกนและกนเชนศาสนาอสลามศาสนายวศาสนาครสตเปนตน

และเปนประจกษพยานแหงความเชอความศรทธาของครสตศาสนกชนซงสะทอนมาจากนกจารกแสวงบญทหลงไหลเขา

มาทเยรซาเลมดนแดนศกดสทธดวยการภาวนาเดนตามทางมรรคาศกดสทธรวมพธบชาขอบพระคณเปนตน

เปนก�าแพงสงใหญดานทศตะวนตกของเนนพระวหารหรอภเขาโมรยาหซงเปนท

ตงของโดมครอบหน(DomeoftheRock)ทเปนสเหรามสลมก�าแพงตะวนตกนาจะเปนจด

ทส�าคญทสดของชาวยวในแผนดนศกดสทธเปนสญลกษณของการทคนอสราเอลไดหวน

กลบคนสแผนดนพนธสญญาเปนสกการสถานศกดสทธทสดของคนยวและเปนทนมส

การและอธฐานภาวนาส�าหรบคนทวไป

ก�าแพงนเปนสวนทเหลอจากก�าแพงพระวหารหลงท

สองทสรางเรมขนตงแตศตวรรษท6กอนค.ศ.ในปท37กอน

ค.ศ.เฮรอดไดรบการแตงตงใหเปนกษตรยของชาวยวพระองค

ไดปรบปรงกรงเยรซาเลมใหสวยงามและสรางพระวหารขนใหม

ใหใหญโตกวาและสวยงามกวาพระวหารของกษตรยโซโลมอล

เพอเปนการเอาใจชาวยวนคอพระวหารทพระเยซเจารจก

ปค.ศ.70กรงเยรซาเลมและพระวหารถกจกรรดตตสท�าลายหมดสนคงเหลอไวแตก�าแพง

ลอมรอบวหารทสรางดวยกอนหนขนาดใหญมากเราจงไดเหนกอนหนทมอายสองพนกวาปทน

หลงสงครามปลดปลอยอสราเอลชาวยวประกาศตงรฐอสราเอลในปค.ศ.1948โดยม

เยรซาเลมเปนเมองหลวง แตสวนทเปนเมองเกาอยในสวนยดครองของประเทศจอรแดน ชาวยวถกหามเขามาทก�าแพง

ตะวนตก จนกระทงอสราเอลชนะสงคราม 6 วน กบประเทศอาหรบ และไดปกครองเยรซาเลมทงหมด ชาวยวจงเขามาท

Western Wall Tunnels (อโมงคก�าแพงดานทศตะวนตก) ThetourofthewesternwalltunnelsisoneofthemostpopulartouristsitesinJerusalem.Theseunder-groundtunnelsconnectthewesternwallprayerareatothenorth-westsideofthetemplemount,passingalongthesideofthetemplemountandunderthepresentdayhousesintheOldCity.Alongitspathareremainsfromthesecondtempleperiod,aswellasstructuresfromlaterperiods. The Jewish Quarterislocatedjustwestof theWesternWall .TheJewishQuarterisathrivingmodern community with morethan1,000families. Ithasbeenrebuiltoutoftherubblethatwasleft from Jordanian occupationof the area from1948until theSixDayWarof1967.Sincethedestructionwassevere,theJewswhoreturnedtotheOldCityin1967 excavated the quarter’sarchaeologicalremainsfirstandthenbuilttheircityover,aroundandbesidetheancientdiscover-ies. Today there are numeroussynagoguesandschoolsforJew-ish studies, alongwith contem-poraryshopsandrestaurantsupand down the streets. The an-cientRomanCardo Street (135AD)with its oldByzantine ba-zaar (325 AD) has been pre-servedand is filledwith trendynewbusinesses that sell awidevarietyofitems,includingorigi-nalartworkbyMuslimQuarter.

The Four Quarters of the Old City

The Muslim Quarter is the largestandmostpopulatedofthefourquartersintheOldCity.DevelopedbyHerodtheGreat,organizedby theChristianByz-antineEmpire,andthenoccupiedbytheChristianCrusaders,eventhissectionisfull ofChurchesandChristian shrines.Themainstreets,El-Wad(which leadstotheDamascusGate)andViaDoloro-sa (which runs from theLionsGate tointersect El-Wad), are bazaars withMuslim shopkeepers ready to sell theChristianPilgrimaplasticcrucifixorol-ive wood nativity set. When Jesuswalkedthroughthesestreetstohiscru-cifixion theywere busy even then andwouldhavebeenfilledwithshops.Clos-ertotheTempleMount(orastheMus-limscallittheHaramesh-Sharif,mean-ing “TheNoble Sanctuary”), buildingsfromtheMamelukes’reconstructionofthecityfrom1250to1516canbeseen.This area today preserves some of thefinemedievalIslamicarchitecture.ArmenianQuarterThenationofArme-niawasthefirstnationtodeclareitselfaChristian nation.They did this in 301,

before the days ofConstantine,but Armenians had been livinginJerusalemsince95B.C. The Armenian Quarter wasestablishedonMountZion301.RightbeforetheCrusaderperiod(1099-1187A.D.)theArmenianQuarter began to develop. Itreached its current size duringthe Ottoman period (1517-1917). Today the Armenian“quarter”coversaboutone-sixthoftheOldCity.

ThewChristian Quarteristhe most visited quarter of theOldCitybecauseitincludesthesite of Jesus’ death, burial andresurrection—theChurchoftheHolySepulcher.Thisquarter isclutteredwithaseeminglyend-lessclusterofchurchesandholysiteswhoseroofs,domesandfa-cadesarebuiltsoclosetogetherthat they are undistinguishable.The streets are filled with nar-row storefronts leading intoshopsthatcontinuelongnarrowpaths to the back. The marketstreets are noisy with modernpilgrimsandshopkeeperstryingtolurethemintotheirstores.

TherouteoftheViaDolorosabegins

near the Lions’ Gate in the Muslim

Quarter and ends at theChurch of the

HolySepulchreintheChristianQuarter,

covering 500meters and incorporating

14StationsoftheCross.Unfortunately,

theViaDolorosa can prove a difficult

placeforprayerandcontemplation,asit

travels through busy streets linedwith

snackbarsandtouristshops.

Shabbat Blessing and Rituals: As thesunbegins tosetonFridayevening,theJewishtradi-tion calls for Jews around theworld to gather in their homesand synagogues to kindle the“Shabbat”(Sabbath)lights.Inamoment of mysterious transi-tion,theworriesandresponsibil-itiesoftheweekfadeaway,andthejoyofadayofpeaceandrestbegins.Traditionally, thewom-anlightsthecandlesandsaysthe“brakha”(blessing),surroundedby her family, who all say,“amen” to the ancient formula,“Blessed are You, Source ofLife,whohasdrawnusclosetoYou in holiness through Yourcommandments,andcommand-ed us to kindle the flames ofShabbat.”

There are at least twocandleslit,butsomepeoplehavethe customof lighting a candleforeachpersoninthefamily,orforeachpersonpresentthateve-ning, so that everyone is repre-sented by a glowing flamethroughoutthenight.Followingthe candlelighting, theBride ofShabbat is welcomed, either

throughsingingsongslikeShabbatSha-lom and L’kha Dodi (Come My Be-loved)orbysaying theeveningprayerservice,calledMa’ariv, inthehomeorsynagogue. Then family and friendsgather around the Sabbath table fordinner.

The table issetwithawhiteorfestivecloth,freshflowers,andyourfa-voritedinnerware.Therearemanyritu-als that takeplacebefore thefirst tasteofchallah(aspecial,braidedbreadusedon the Sabbath). The beautiful hymn,“Shalom Aleichem,” (Peace Be UponYou), is sung towelcome the Sabbathangelsintothehome.Somepeoplehavea new custom of passingAngel Cards

(available in New Age book-stores) around the table so thateachpersoncandrawtheangelswho accompanyhimor her forthat Shabbat. These angels aredescribedinqualitieslikeLove,Trust, Balance, Creativity, Sur-render, etc. Then we bless theangelsinourlives,ourchildren.Blessing is a major theme forShabbat,becausewhenwetaketimetoappreciatelife,weopenthegatesofloveandblessing.

The parents place theirhandson the headof the child,remembering the preciousnessof each soul in their care. TheboysareblessedwiththewordsthatJacobgavetothesonsofhisbeloved son, Joseph, “May theHolyOnemakeyoulikeEfraimandMenasheh,”while the girlsareblessedwiththenamesofthe

fourmatriarchs,“MaytheHolyOne make you like Sarah,Rebekah, Rachel, and Leah.”Theseblessingsarefollowedbythepriestlyblessing,“MayGodbless and keep you. May theradiance ofGod’s Presence liftyouandbegracioustoyou.Maythe radiance ofGod’s Presenceshine upon you and bless youwith peace.”Personal blessingscan also be whispered to eachchild, creating a very specialmoment between parent andchild.Sincenoteveryonehasachild, but everyone likes anddeservestobeblessed,theadultscanbless theever-presentchildin each other, and the childrenmight even have a blessing fortheirparentsandfriends.

The meal begins withKiddush,theblessingoveracupofwineorgrapejuice.Thefruitofthegrapevineisasymbolofabundance and rejoicing. Theintroductorypartofthekiddushrecalls the six days of creationwhich culminated in a seventhday of rest for the Creator andfor all of creation. Then theprayerover thewine is recited,“Blessed are You, Source ofLife,whocreatesthefruitofthe

vine.”ThisisfollowedbyadescriptionoftheexodusfromEgyptandtheimpor-tanceofadayofrestasanexpressionofourtruefreedom.

Thenitistimetowashthehandsinaceremonialactthatrecallsthepriest-hoodoftheHolyTemple.Withauniquetwohandledwashingcup,wepourwateroneachhandthreetimes,liftourhandsandsaythefollowingbrakha(blessing),“BlessedareYou,SourceofLife,whohas drawn us close toYou in holinessthroughYourcommandments,andcom-mandedustoraiseupthehands.”Afterdrying the hands, it is customary toreturninsilencetothetable,whichhasnow assumed the status of an altar.Everyone waits quietly or hums a“nigun,” a wordless melody, togetheruntilthebreadisshared.Thisisaplay-fulandsimplewaytoteachchildrenandadultstofocustheirattentiononaritualandtoperformitwithawareness.

Shabbat shalom means“Peace be on you this day ofrest.” Normally they only say“Shalom” but from the Fridayevening until Saturday eveningtheygreeteachotherwiththesewords“ShabbatShalom”;whichmeans “Peace Shabbat” or as“PeaceonShabbat.”

Thetowniscitedinallfourgospels(Matthew4:13,8:5,11:23,17:24,Mark1:21,2:1,9:33,Luke4:23,31,7:1,10:15,John2:12,4:46,6:17,24,59)whereitwasreportedtohavebeennearthehometownoftheapos-tlesSimonPeter,Andrew,JamesandJohn,aswellasthetaxcollectorMatthew.OneSabbath,JesustaughtinthesynagogueinCapernaumandhealedamanwhowaspossessedbyanuncleanspirit(Luke4:31–36andMark1:21–28).ThisstoryisnotableforbeingtheonlyonecommonbetweenthegospelsofMarkandLuke,butnotcontainedintheGospelofMatthew(seeSynopticGospelsformoreliterarycomparisonbetweenthegospels).Afterwards,hehealedSimonPeter’smother-in-lawofafever(Luke4:38-39).AccordingtoLuke7:1–10,itisalsotheplacewhereJesushealedtheservantofaRomancenturionwhohadaskedforhishelp.CapernaumisalsomentionedinMatthew9:1–Mark2:1–12,andLuke5:17–26asthelocationofthefamoushealingoftheparalyticloweredthroughtherooftoreachJesus.
