Texas-Louisiana Division and Greenspoint Area Chapter =Texas-Louisiana Division and Greenspoint Area Chapter =A FANTASTIC TEAM!A FANTASTIC TEAM!by Donna M. Rodgers, CPS

WOW!  This past weekend started out on Thursday afternoon with the arrival of a huge storm!  Little did I know that by Friday, the sun would be out again and the mid-May T-L Division conclusion would be as brilliant as the sunshine outside of the Crown Plaza Hotel at Greenspoint.  Not only did the weather turn out to be more than anyone could have hoped for, but the entire T-L Division meeting was definitely above and beyond my expectations.  The Friday seminar sessions were excellent, the speakers were eloquent and the Greenspoint Area Chapter did themselves proud! I know that with all the networking I did, there’s a lot of interest in CLNAC’s sponsorship of the 2012 meeting and I know that we won’t disappoint anyone!   My thanks to the CLNAC for enabling me to attend the 2011 T-L Division meeting and I really look forward to 2012!  See everyone at South Shore Harbour!

““What’s In Your Toolkit?”What’s In Your Toolkit?”   By: Lisa Kumbalek

“What’s In Your Toolkit?” was the theme of this year’s Texas-Louisiana Division Annual Meeting hosted by the Greenspoint Area Chapter.  I was one of the lucky recipients of our chapter’s scholarship to attend this great annual meeting.  I can honestly say one of the most important things I have in my toolkit is membership to IAAP and, specifically, to the Clear Lake/NASA chapter.  I want to thank our chapter for this scholarship and for the chance it gives our membership to attend these division meetings  when company funds/support are not available.  I feel like I have gone full circle, having won the chapter’s scholarship back in 2003 to attend my very first Texas-Louisiana Division Annual Meeting which was also hosted by the Greenspoint Chapter.  That 2003 meeting and all of its great speakers (Jim “Mattress Mack” McIlvane, Rory Aplanalp who introduced the “Starfish Story” to me, and the other speakers) paved the way to inciting in me the desire to make a difference one life at a time—whether at work or at home.  It was also at this conference where I got to know Bernice, Frances, Michelle, and others from our chapter better, and they, as well as other chapter members through the years, have all been such great role models for our profession and chapter.  By the way, Michelle Spradley won one of the other chapter scholarships in 2003, and it was her first division meeting as well, and look at the difference she has made since that 2003 annual meeting.  To see Michelle’s on-stage presence and to listen to her farewell speech as the 2010-2011 President of the Texas/Louisiana Division, how you cannot see that membership and involvement in IAAP is one of the most important tools you can have in your toolkit.Because of the impact the 2003 Greenspoint annual meeting had on me, I have since attended every IAAP Texas/Louisiana Division Meeting and have missed only one IAAP international conference.  My membership in IAAP and my Clear Lake Chapter have afforded me the tools to confidently perform and meet the challenges at my various jobs at Enron up until I was severed in late 2006 and to help me successfully meet the challenges in my current job.  Again, I thank the Clear Lake Chapter for the scholarships I have won, because that first scholarship back in 2003 started me on the path to performing with “Passion and Purpose.”I encourage all of our chapter members to attend our chapter meetings, division meetings, the IAAP annual meetings, and more importantly to get involve in some way in our chapter. Since the Clear Lake/NASA Chapter will be hosting the IAAP Texas/Louisiana Division Meeting next year, there are so many ways (big and small) that you can help. The knowledge, networking opportunities, and friendships that you will gain will help you obtain some very valuable business tools. Come “Sail Away…Navigate Your Career” with us as we plan and develop our 2012 Texas/Louisiana Division Meeting at South Shore Harbor. Your assistance in making 2012 great could positively impact your career, as well as the career of others

The Texas-Louisiana Division & Greenspoint Chapter did an awesome job of planning and executing the Annual Meeting and Education Forum that occurred on May 12 through May 15 in Greenspoint / Houston. I enhanced my personal tool kit with things such as knowledge on how to step outside of my biology - to elevate into my humanity; realized that I am a generator; the importance of the CHIRP method; that intent does not equal to impact; to put away my teeth; parliamentary procedures; do’s and don’ts during the IAAP business meetings, and PowerPoint tips just to name a few.  This was by no means a boondoggle.  I learned a lot about IAAP as a whole, networked with IAAP members from other chapters, enjoyed shopping at the various vendor tables—and I ate too much.  It was a wonderful educational conference!  I look forward to assisting in making the 2012 TL conference an even better success.

Those were the days!

My First 20 Years at The Boeing Company My First 20 Years at The Boeing Company by Donna M. Rodgers, CPS

I was hired by Tom McNassar (Avionics & S/W) and began with The Boeing Company on June 8, 1995.  The actual date is actually irrelevant since my 4+ years at MacDac were added in when THE MERGER occurred. That time was traumatic!

My first assignment was to support the DIT Team in SCTF working for Chris Christensen (“How are you?”  Reply:  “Peachy, just peachy!)  NOT!

In the 1st 5 or so years, I did a lot of manual labor – nothing was automated, like timecards, remember those?  I also brought a bunch of Seattle engineers to Houston to work ISS!  There were a lot of them!

I was encouraged by Jeanetta Wilson and Dick Cogo to join the PRIDE Team.  I really enjoyed the comraderie and events we planned and executed.  It wasn’t long before I found myself elected as their leader and I forged ahead with the team for probably 5 or 6 years.  I attribute this involvement to the improvement of my public speaking skills that I now have as well as the development of my creative side.

I was recruited by Mr. Raftery to work for him in Tower II with the A&S/W group and supported him for a really long time – seems like forever…  I volunteered to take on the CEV Proposal effort in 2005 and moved to LA along with my 2 cats.  (That’s a whole story on its own!) Yes I was a red-head for

several years!

Pre-August 2009 2005 and beyond! As you can see, I’ve lost some hair over the years, but meeting

astronauts and being able to call some friends is wonderous to me.  This career has been my dream ever since I saw the first Star Trek episode.  Star Wars blew me away and now anything related to space is definitely on my agenda!  I’ve pined to see a launch over the last 20 years and had an opportunity in 1998, early in the ISS construction.  But alas the bird didn’t fly after 3 tries and I had to come home.  I am very proud to say that I’ve been a part of ISS since Freedom and now through U.S. completion.

I’ve gone through many personal changes over the past 20 years of course, but they have been for the most part positive changes.  Joining the ISS Product Support Team in 2005ish has given me so many opportunities and I am forever thankful for the experiences!

I believe that I have contributed in many ways to the improvement of our work life here at Boeing, Houston.  I’ve volunteered for many activities through Boeing and NASA as well and had wonderful experiences as a result.  I saw the ISS for the first time while standing outside the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo probably back in the late 90’s.  I promote the Space Program anytime I can and I have nieces and nephews who think I’ve been to space…OK I am kinda spacey at times, but they are little kids and I get all excited when I start talking about astronauts, shuttles and most of all ISS.  If I had the money, I would definitely book a seat to go to ISS!

I thank everyone who has traveled this path with me over the last 20 years.  I’ve made some lifetime friendships and learned so much.  I appreciate every day (even the bad ones) that I’m employed by Boeing!

On May 2nd, Natasha had another surgery to remove an ovarian mass. Natasha had complications from the surgery on May 2nd that compromised a portion of her bowel. She had to return to surgery to have that portion of her bowel removed on May 8th. She was in ICU and has a colostomy bag that will remain for 3 - 6 months; she will then have another surgery to remove it. As you can imagine, her family is under a lot of stress and needs our help. Natasha was in the hospital for several weeks. Due to the complications Natasha will be out of work longer than anticipated. From the day she went into the hospital until the day she is able to return to work will be unpaid time off. With the medical bills piling up and her not receiving paid leave the family is going through a difficult time. Natasha has a long road ahead of her. Please come and help raise funds for this family in need.
