01 Introduction

General Information:• Capital of Saxony with about 500.000 inhabitants.

Road Traffic Safety:• Overall about 15.000 accidents (including material damage) in 2005,

more than 2.500 people were injured.• Every year about 100 persons get injured in accidents at turned-off

traffic lights.• Every year about 90 collisions of left-turning drivers with oncoming

traffic take place at traffic lights.• Approximately 500 persons are injured in right-of-way-accidents

involving bicyclists every year.

2. Medium-term strategies:

End of project

• Duration of one year. • Mainly activities dealing with quality

management.

• Duration of two further years. • Primarily activities in the range of

network analysis as well as road safety audit.

03 Major IssuesAction plan for 60 black spots

Approach:• Based on the ranking of black spots, an action plan was worked out in

order to eliminate 60 black spots in Dresden.• The spots were ranked by means of benefit-cost-estimations.

Results:• The investment costs for the measures suggested amount to about

2.800.000 €.• The annual cost can be estimated at around 380.000 € p. a..• The benefit adds up to 5.600.000 € p. a..• This leads to a benefit-cost-ratio of approximately 15.

04 ConclusionsResults:• The City of Dresden is now fitted with a short-term concept in order to

improve the road traffic safety at 60 spots effectively .• The action plan is ranked by means of benefit-cost-ratio and allows a

highly efficient use of resources. • Results are provided to support a safe development of road

infrastructure in the long-term. • The analysis of safety potentials throughout the main road network

builds a basis for an appropriate consideration of road traffic safety in the future planning process.
