An Example: Your Stories from Yesterday

Wiring in stories prepares children for reading success. They internalize the structure of stories from our home culture. Then they learn to read about others. You might want to share with parents.

Meet Teacher Aaron Rhode

“The H.E.A.R. strategy is so important for me to teach I usually teach it at the beginning of school each year. We practice it often.”

Strategy: Chapterscape

Let students act out key elements of a favorite book chapter

Use nonlinguistic learning Great way to build

elements of a story Develop plot, characters,

and motivation

Strategy: Character Smart

Making meaning with visual and kinesthetic experiences

Student selects a character from a book

They then prepare and perform a short dialogue

Example Character Smart

Dressed in a large blue windbreaker with a couple of pillows a fourth grade boy changed himself into Augustus Gloop from Charlie and the Chocolate

Factory. After creating a brief script he summarized his dilemmas in a two minute perfomance.

Strategy for Families: Thinking Strategy (Prediction)

Parents can help students to become expert at predicting by practicing this skill during commercials (mute, recall, and predict). For example, when watching a video or movie ask what do you think will happen next?

The Whole Child

The body, mind, and brain system are one. So, at school we should respect that our students’ mind and brain systems need to be able to move some throughout their learning day so they are ready to learn with all systems ‘go’ for active minds-on learning like this boy.

* BrainSMART Strategy: Teach Comparisons (1 of 25 of Our Thinking for Results Strategies)

Comparisons is a basic core cognitive skill for increasing student achievement. Students need to learn to compare spontaneously.
