The Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge, Mass

Parody or homage? A January 1962 cover of The Saturday Evening Post features an older man eying a painting that looks like a Jackson Pollock. The painter? Norman Rockwell.

Titled The Connoisseur, the painting is interpreted as a mix of art criticism (is this true artwork?) and bravado (but I can do it too!). It mixes Jackson Pollock’s trademark drip painting with Rockwell’s trademark illustrations. Rockwell used Pollock’s painting canvas on the floor method, before adding the gentleman viewer to the work.

God Particle: Higgs Boson And Other Quantum SecretsSarbmeet Kanwal, PhD, physicist

Sometimes called the Goddamn Particle because it took almost 50 years and billions of dollars to find, the Higgs Boson is the missing link necessary to complete what is perhaps the most beautiful and elegant theory in physics regarding the fundamental building blocks of our universe. Rewarded by a Nobel Prize in 2013, this thrilling discovery was the crowning glory in a 100-year journey to understand the stuff from which everything is made – a journey that revealed a whimsical world of tiny invisible particles that can appear and disappear at will, tunnel through walls and even be in two places at the same time. (No background in physics is required for the course.) 4 SESSIONSFri, Oct 6-Oct 27, 10:30 am-noonFee and Code: $79, XPERS 278

Irish Heritage 21

History of Ireland – The Irish Identity: A Continuation...Henry McNally, M.A, M.S., Irish historian

The early days of 20th Century Ireland saw a confluence of imperative movements and events. Some historical, cultural and literary, some political and social, some outright revolutionary, these forces produced something extraordinary; an Irish Republic. A nation, however, must exist before announcing itself to the world as a free Republic. This program is a new approach to contemporary Irish History and includes a series of recorded lectures describing the establishment of a Celtic identity. We’ll look at the way in which historical, cultural and literary developments allowed for, almost demanded, political agitation and rebellion. This fall we’ll focus on the 1916 Rebellion and the Irish War of Independence. First class is a review of the completed summer program. Returning students are welcome and new students are encouraged to attend. 6 SESSIONSWed, Oct 18-Nov 22, 10 am-noonFee and Code: $89, XIRIG 125

End Of An Era? The Geopolitics Of East Asia In The Age Of Trump Laura Neitzel, Ph.D. Director of Studies/Committee on Global Thought, Columbia University

With the economic and military rise of China, the ongoing nuclear posturing of North Korea, and the nativist leaning of the new U.S. administration, we may be witnessing a reconfiguration of the geopolitical order in East Asia established in the aftermath of World War II. What would be the regional and global implications of a reduced or redefined role for the U.S.? Are we witnessing the end of the post-World War II order in East Asia? If so, what might we expect next?Thurs, Oct 26, 7-8:30 pmFee and Code: $19, XWWTS 303

Down Melody Lane Lifting the Clouds of War – The Music of World War II“Down Melody Lane” is a musical duo of performers Gilda Healy and Barry Rosenzweig. Don’t miss this interactive-lecture with audience singing (and dancing?) to the music. “Down Melody Lane” explores the music of the 1940s and provides many interesting facts about music and life during WWII.

Gilda Healy began studying music and voice at St. Anne’s School in Jersey City, NJ, where she grew up. Gilda Holds a Master of Arts Degree in Museum Professions from Seton Hall University (South Orange, NJ). Since college days and until recently, Gilda has been an active participant in the Music Ministry as Soloist and Choir Member at St. Catharine’s Church in Holmdel, NJ. An evacuee from Tower 2, Gilda Healy is a survivor the NYC/911 terrorists attacks and has recently published her story of survival. Ms. Healy is a volunteer with both the Center for World War II Studies & Chhange at Brookdale Community College and the National Guard Museum, Sea Girt, NJ.

Barry Rosenzweig has been a musician since the age of eight, when he started playing the piano. Barry has received his BA & MA degrees in Music from Rutgers and Trenton State College (now TCNJ), respectively. Mr. “R” (as he likes to be called) served two years active duty as a Lieutenant with the U. S. Army Field Band of Washington, D. C. Mr. “R” retired in 2006 after forty years as an educator within the New Jersey public school system. Although classically trained on the piano, Barry, like Gilda, loves all genres of music; with a penchant for the music of World War II.
