The body needs a combination of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in order to function well.
Your body also needs vitamins and minerals, which maintain energy levels and generally keep your body healthy. These can be obtained by eating a good balance of foods from these three groups.
Carbohydrates and proteins contain roughly the same amount of energy (i.e. the same number of calories) per gram.
Fats are calorie-rich and contain more than twice as much energy per gram as carbohydrates or protein.
Typically, we need to eat more carbohydrate than protein or fat. It should make up about 60% of our diet. It should include wholegrain foods, as well as fruits and vegetables.
Fat should make up about 25% of our diet. It should include unsaturated (‘good’) fats like those found in nuts and olive oil.
Protein should make up about 15%. It should include a range of sources, e.g. poultry, beef, eggs, tofu, cheese, etc.
