1. The VoDKAST Middleware server creates the STB menus by accessing the metadata information of the videos from the VoD cluster (movie name, actors, director, etc.) and the EPG information from the live and playout channels while considering the user access rights and credit information obtained from the PMS. Thus, the menu is customized for each guest.
2. The hotel operator can fine tune the platform through the management console. The Middleware Server also monitors the current state of each part of the system and triggers the proper alerts to the management consoles in case of any problem.
3. The VoD Streaming Cluster stores all the videos in its storage nodes and streams it to the network through the streaming nodes. The platform allows an unlimited number of streamer and storage nodes to increase the storage or streaming capacity independently from each other according to the operator needs.
4. The IP Contribution System obtains the live DVB-S, DVB-C and DVB-T MPEG-2 streams from satellite, cable or terrestrial feeds and injects them into the IP network as IP multicast streams.
5. The Playout Server generates continuous loop streams of stored contents as IP multicast streams.
6. The NetPVR server stores local recordings of live TV channels to provide time-shifting features to the platform.
7. The Digital Signage server controls the digital signage screens and split its layout in several regions that can be filled with any multimedia content, even Adobe Flash.
8. The Ethernet Switches aggregate the outputs of all the servers and carry the video streams to the screens through the IP network.
9. The integrated solution allows several types of STB and screens working together: Standalone STB screen, Standard PCs screens and Low or High Connectivity Digital signage screen. Any IPTV content (live, playout, VoD, etc.) can be displayed in any of the STB types.

mIddleWare nodes
The middleware server is the core of the Blusens IPTV solution. It controls the interaction between each part of the system and the interaction of the system itself with the rest of the hotel services. It is also the entry point for the hotel operator, where he can check the status of the network, the connected STB, trigger alerts to pop up in one or a group of STB etc.
VoDKAST will generate menu screens for browsing all the media library in an integrated way. The interface is coherent among all the applications of the system (i.e. TV, VoD, NetPVR, services). It’s also able of providing screens with local information of the hotel and surroundings. This information screens are very simple to create and edit via collection of templates that the operator can modify online through the management interface. All the modules of this middleware are multilingual and can support any language with any font, for example, Arabic.
The VoDKAST middleware provides mechanisms to interact with several hotel services (room service, laundry, housekeeping, etc…) providing direct communication with the departments where this services are stored and being able also to print text messages with the service required.
VoDKAST has the ability of overimpressing banners over the video of all or only some of the Set Top Boxes. It’s also able of blocking the ability of override the message by locking remotely the IR control of the STB.
The middleware nodes are the servers that conform the middleware cluster. Depending on the number of users the middleware can be a single server or a cluster of multiple machines working together to provide unlimited growing capabilities to the platform.
In hospitality environments a cluster of nodes is rarely required, but, in other case scenarios, like telco operators for example, this requirement becomes more common. Please ask your sales representative to give you more information about the telco approach for larger installations.

The LiveTV and playout channels can be shown or hidden to certain STB or rooms. It’s numbering can be easily resorted and, if provided by the operator, teletext and subtitles are fully supported.
The contents can be marked with any tag defined by the administrator, like action, High Definition, Music Video, Documentary, advertisement, Black and White movie etc. The middleware allows the administrator to sort this tags in any menu/submenu configuration, so browsing thousands of contents is very comfortable.
The price ruling system is very flexible, allowing the hotel to provide different prices according to categories like movie genre, director, length, etc. The system provides a price simulator to check the price charged for the movie to the guest for a particular situation.

The administrator is capable of monitoring what is being played in any room at each STB for any given moment. It’s also capable of rebooting a group or a single STB or even forcing it to tune a specific channel or content and locking the IR control of the STB.
The administrator can check the current billing for any given STB or room at any moment.
The logging system is continuously monitoring the status of the system an can provide alerts when a STB is disconnected from the network or a live TV channel is not receiving content. This prevents any unauthorized access to the distribution network.
The middleware is also capable of gathering use statistics for both VoD and live contents.

The edition of the local information pages is very easily done via the web interface. The administrator does not need any programming or web developing knowledge to create high quality local information pages.
It’s possible to select an specific welcome TV channel according to the nationality of the guest. If the nationality is not registered in the system the welcome channel will be the default one. It’s also possible to run a specific advertisement as welcome video in the mother language of the guest.

The VoD cluster is the group of servers responsible of storing and streaming the on-demand contents to each STB managed by the middleware. The cluster can be divided into several storage and caching levels with one or more specific node at each level. The most common approach is to have one or two levels with one node each.
In the first level, the storage nodes store and replicate the multimedia content library. At the second and further levels, the streaming nodes act as both streamers and caching nodes, providing the capacity to answer the queries from the STB faster than from the first level.When a STB asks for a movie to a streamer, the streamer checks if the movie is stored locally in its own memory. If the content is available locally, the streaming starts immediately, otherwise, the streamer asks the storage to stream the content to itself. The content is then served through the streamer to the STB. At the same time, the content is split in two and cached locally in the streamer to speed up the subsequent accesses from other users to the same movie.
This clustering approach means that the storing and streaming requirements can grow independently from each other making it possible to adapt the system to any installation size.

A transcoding node will enable the operator to load the content in any format and store it in as many ones as required, so that the same content can be streamed in different qualities.

Virtual ticketing is a technology which ensures that the access URL for a media content is created for one specific STB, so it can be only watched by this STB even if the URL is stolen by another user. The unauthorized access to any content is blocked and the incidence is reported.Virtual ticketing is not a DRM mechanism, is an access control mechanism.
load balancIng
Load balancing is an optional feature that is continually monitoring the current streaming load of every streamer. The queries of a STB for a specific content can be automatically redirected to the least busy streamer so the total load of the cluster is equitably distributed through all the streamers.
The streaming nodes are the connection points between the VoD cluster and the STB with VoD capabilities. The contribution head-end, part of the Blusens blu:core line, is the part of the system in charge of obtaining live content from any source and perform the appropriate operations to transform this feeds into multicast IP streams capable of being transferred through the IP network. Once these streams are in IP format, the middleware is the responsible of granting or revoking the access of each STB to them.
According to the source of the live video the contribution can be digital or analog. In the first case the feeds will come from satellite (DVB-S) terrestrial (DVB-T) or cable (DVB-C) broadcasts. On the other hand, for the analog contribution, the input will be composite or s-video, both in PAL or NTSC formats.
As the content distributed in DVB-S/T/C is already an MPEG2-TS stream, the operation performed by the digital contribution is remove the QPSK, QAM or any other transport layer and substitute it by IP. That's why the digital video stream is not modified in any moment and the broadcast quality is maintained during the whole distribution of the channel through the IP network.
For the analog contribution option, the first step is encoding the original analog source into MPEG-2 digital format. Once this step is done, the stream behaves exactly the same as a digital stream being transferred through the network.

The digital contribution IP Streamer offers a complete professional video head-end solution. The analog contribution modules can receive any analog signal in composite or S-Video format and transform it into MPEG2-TS multicast IP streams to inject it into the IP network providing a convenient way to integrate legacy video generating systems in the IPTV system. Once transformed by this modules, the streams can be treated exactly the same as the live TV streams coming from the digital contribution head-end, the playout server or the Digital Signage server.
The analog contribution series consists of 3 different sized models, enabling custom-sized streaming systems: Ranging from the ultra-compact 1 slot chassis (max. one blade) up to the rackable 21 slot chassis (max. 21 blades) for high-density and multichannel streaming applications, the later one with dual redundant power supplies. VoDKAST Network Personal Video Recorder (VoDKAST nPVR) increases the possibilities of the VoDKAST platform with the capability of recording, indexing and managing live video sources. This way, it is possible for the user to record live broadcasts, and store it in the VoD streaming cluster storage space for later on demand recovery, providing several services, for example:
- Schedule network recordings. The recordings can be managed directly from the EPG or manually programmed. The users decide which programs they want to record and this programs are automatically recorded in VoDKAST servers. Later, the users will be able to watch the recordings on demand when needed.
- Legal filing systems. For continuous recording of video broadcasting and their later recovering. The Legal filing systems incorporates the EPG information for easy browsing of the recorded contents. This kind of cyclic recordings can be integrated with video surveillance systems. It also supports Catch Up TV services, or live shows recording for the later on demand re-broadcasting.
The NetPVR allows the implementation of Time Shifting for TV channels which allows to the users that are watching a TV channel, to pause and recover it from the beginning of its broadcast using on demand video controls.
Due to legal reasons, VoDKAST nPVR offers several configuration options of the filling systems:

STEP 1
Select the resolution of the output screen, Pulsar can work with SD, HD, 16:9, 4:3, etc. Any resolution is supported.
Divide the output screen space into any number of regions and select the size for each region with the drag and drop interface
It’s even possible to overlap the regions if desired.
STEP 2
Upload the multimedia content to the server. Any content is supported MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DIVX, h.264, Adobe Flash animations and video, JPEG, TIFF, etc.
It’s also possible to associate an external information source to any resource. This way you can deploy a flash animation with weather information, and the information to fill the template will be gathered form Internet.

STEP 3
Compose a schedule of programs by filling the layouts defined in the step 1 with the resources defined in the step 2.
The layout can change within a schedule so you can deploy a full screen video and then split the screen in four regions with a different RSS feed in each.
STEP 4
Assign one of the schedules defined in the step 3 to any of the screens available in the network.
The administrator can check in real time what is being broadcast in each screen at any moment.

With the playout server, the administrator can generate continuous loops of full screen pre-scheduled contents and inject it in the network as multicast streams. This is the easiest and simplest way of creating Digital Signage information channels.
These streams are created in MPEG-2 TS format and the original contents must be MPEG-2 video as well. The platform supports both standard and high definition streaming and can schedule even stored and live TV contents under a common schedule.

Optionally, VoDKAST Playout can perform seamless splicing for MPEG-2 content, thus generating a continuous, clean stream out of multiple input sources and switches.
Seamless splicing is a technology which calculates on real time the intermediate video frames during the transition between two videos in a sequence. This means when switching from one video to following, the resulting stream won’t be affected by MPEG-2 video noise providing a clean, smooth transition.
By using the advanced scheduling functions the administrator can compose multicast TV channels interspersing Live TV streaming from the satellite or a CCTV camera with local stored advertisements, each 10 minutes for example.
As the stream created shows only one video at once, a channel generator is not required, but high bandwidth network is a must. Any problem in the network connection will be reflected in the video on the screens.

Signage Server Architecture
With Pulsar Digital Signage server the administrator can manage the whole Digital Signage platform. It controls the channel generators, composes schedules of screen templates and manages the resources used to fill these templates. It’s also responsible of uploading the resources to the channel generators in a completely bandwidth controlled way. Finally, the server will monitor on real time what is being broadcast in each screen with the local time in the screen location, triggering the proper SNMP alerts in case of any incidence.

DS.100 Digital Signage Server
Pulsar Digital Signage server can generate any screen composition by dividing the screen into a template with smaller regions. Each region can have any loop of contents in almost any media format and the layout of the template can change accordingly to the time schedule.
A web server gives access to the platform in a hierarchical way, allowing the Digital Signage contractor to resell time slots for specific regions of certain screens to third parties making it possible to get direct revenue from this platform.
Pulsar Digital Signage server can drive as many low and high connectivity channel generators as desired, independently from the IP technology used to connect the server to the channel generators. It can also upload any given template to one or a group of Channel Generators to provide an easy and fast management of large amounts of screens. The server will also manage the synchronization of the channel generators even if they are distributed across different time zones.
It’s possible to link specific contents to a external information system, like weather RSS feeds or queue ticketing systems. The server will get the information from the external sources periodically and will upload the updated info to each screen. In case the internet connection with the server is lost, the signage screens will work with the latest available information avoiding empty spaces in the screens’ templates, for both low and high connectivity channel generators.

The Channel Generators are the devices responsible of composing the final video stream by filling the template defined at the Pulsar Signage Server with the media contents in a single video stream.
Depending on the reliability of the network the streams can be generated at the head-end level with high connectivity channel generators.
The low connectivity solution is best suited to deployments where the permanent connection with the screens can not be 100% assured. In this situations, the STB connected to the screen must have local storage space to ensure 24x7 signage generation even during a network outing.
The channel generator can be deployed at the head-end level, and its output can be transferred through a trusted network.

WhaT´s facIal recognITIon?
The Blusens Facial Recognition system allows the manager of a public crowded place to gather information about the people visiting such venue in real time. Shopping malls, Hospitals, Bank branches, Airports, etc. are places suitable for this kind of systems.
The system consists in a series of small cameras strategically deployed on specific places, such as adverstisement or ailes, where the crowd is expected to walk or to stop and pay attention to the advertisement shown. The system is capable of detecting the face of each person in range and identify the gender and the age, so the administrator can gather statistics about the kind of people at the venue at any given moment.
The Facial Recognition system can even calculate the number of seconds each person spends in front of the camera and determine for how long the person was looking to the camera directly during this period. By using this mechanism the property owner can discover what is the age and gender distribution on a specific moment of the day as well as if the latest changes in decoration or advertising are increasing the attention spans of the visitors.
All the information gathered via different cameras is integrated into one single server to create statistics defined specifically to fit the necessities of every authorized user of the platform. The access to this statistics and reports can be done from any device (tablets, phones, computers, etc.)

ADJACENT CHANNEL REJECTION (dB): The difference between the minimum gain in the channel and the maximum gain (minimum attenuation) in the adjacent channel. The adjacent channel in UHF is C±2 and in VHF is C±1).
AGC RANGE (dB): The difference between the maximum and minimum signal that is necessary for a system with AGC to keep a constant output.
BAND REJECTION (dB): The difference between the minimum gain in the amplified band and the maximum attenuation in the rejected band.
FLATNESS (dB): The difference between the maximum and minimum gain in a certain band or channel.
FREQUENCY RESPONSE: The variation in amplitude within a certain band or channel.

MER (Modulation Error Ratio): is a very similar parameter to C/N and is also a ratio measured in dB. It includes all other signal impairments, not just noise. It can therefore be used to give a more direct indication of decoding margin when, as is often the case, there is co-channel interference as well as noise in the channel.
