1. Read silently for 15 minutes. This will get you immersed within the book and able to understand the exposition(setting, background, character).

2. Be prepared to record golden lines, comments, and connections as you are reading with post-it notes(minimum of two!)

Warm-up: Brainstorm your favorite monsters from fiction and nonfiction.

Word splash- Use the following words in a creative paragraph:

Expert, dinosaur, predator, species, fossil, extinct.

As we read, look out for text features such as subheadings, captions, and graphic aids.

After reading, your group will be assigned one section of the article. You will write a 20 word or less GIST summary of that section.

We will vote on the best summary with only the main idea and supporting details.
