Observations The Royal Academy of Arts (RA) is an independent institution supporting artists and promoting interest in the arts through a comprehensive exhibition programme. It was founded in 1768 by Sir Joshua Reynolds. With a million visitors a year the RA is currently among the top ten attractions for paying visitors in London. The brief for Foster & Partners was the refurbishment of the Victorian Diploma galleries located on top of the original Burlington House, and the rationalisation of internal circulation in the building as a whole. The geometry of the galleries is dictated by the plan of the original Burlington House on top of which they sit. The height is restricted by a planning requirement that they should not rise above the line of the existing parapet to the South.

The geometry of the galleries is dictated by the plan of the original Burlington House on top of which they sit. The height is restricted by a planning requirement that they should not rise above the line of the existing parapet to the South.

One of the key design objectives was to bring Light down ������������ ����� � ��� ��� ������������������������the reception space is glazed. Low oxide glazing has been used which admits diffuse north light to the space. The Western edge of the Reception is glazed, allowing direct sun

to illuminate the space. Light is admitted to the three spaces through the continuous skylight and modulated through a series of automated louvres. Fins span the length of the skylight providing a depth designed to exclude lower angles of sun.

A comparative analysis of lighting conditions over the course of the day was possible for the Tondo Space and the sectional study through the Reception and Sackler Galleries. It is clearly demonstrated that the impact of daylighting in ���� �� �� ��� ������ ���� ���� � ��� ����� � ������ � ��

not possible for the Sackler Galleries however, given that the ������� �������� ��������� ����� ���� ���������������������and operation of the louvres could not prevent direct sun from entering. It was found that the East-West louvres were more effective than the North-South louvres. The analysis of Daylight factors provided a useful starting point for further investigations.
