America’s first National Park

Established in 1872

Located in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho

Home to a large variety of wildlife, including grizzly bears, wolves, bison and elk.

Located on a large volcanic field, that millions of years ago had some of the most volcanic eruptions.

The Earth’s largest concentration of geysers ( Old Faithful etc.) & some of the world’s most extraordinary hot springs.

People & Yellowstone Around 11.000 years ago Yellowstone was use d as home or hunting ground by Native people

In 1872 it became the 1st National Park of the United States

Today it is internationally recognized as one of the most magnificent parks (natural wonders & wildlife)

The importance of FireEcosystem adapted to wildfires

Many of its plants have adaptations that help them survive fires

For example, roots that live even if the top of the plant is burnt

Mammals ( 67 different species)Some of them :Bison , grizzly bears, gray wolf, elk, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, mountain goat and mountain lion.

HabitatsAlpine tundra: dry, rocky, treeless areas near the top of the mountains. There, exist: low growing plants & some mammals: mountain goats & pikaMountain meadows: grassland of thousand of acres. Because of heavy winter snows, they often remain moist. Habitats: elk, pronghorns, deerSage-steppe Grasslands: treeless areas of grass, shrubs & wildflowers, with low moisture and seasonal extremes in temperature. Habitat: bison

Boundary conflictsYellowstone was basically established to preserve the geysers and the hot springs, not necessarily to protect the wide-ranging wildlife.Today, for Yellowstone’s big animals –such as grizzy bear, elf, wolves- it’s not clear where the boundaries start and stop.Many of these species require wide ranges or migration corridors to get to their breeding sites.The result: wildlife migrates outside of the park boundaries into unprotected areas. The area around Yellowstone is a frequent site of conflict between wildlife and people
