Why we study English

Задание для учащегося-экзаменуемого. Монолог.

Imagine:You are the leader of the country.You don’t know English well enough.But during your work you have to face up to different situations, concerning English knowledge. You realize, that it’s high time for you to speak English by yourself without anybody’s help.

• Give a talk on studying English. Remember to discuss:

1) Whether you know any historical events the result of which English began to spread throughout the world.

2) Whether you agree that English is a “world language”

3) English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist, isn’t it? Where is English used today?

Use: all over the world; the most widespread language; nowadays; through the centuries; arrive; spread through the world; set up; to be represented in; the official language.

You will talk for 1.5-2 minutes. The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then she/he will ask you some questions.

Why we study EnglishEnglish is spoken practically all over the world. About 20% of the world’s population speak English. English is spoken by more than 350 million people. Geographically, it is the most widespread language on earth. It is nowadays second only to Chinese in the number of people who speak it.English is the official language in 44 countries. The history of Great Britain helps to understand the present condition of English. English is a language of the Germanic group. Many English words were borrowed from the language of Angles and Saxons. Hundreds of French words came into English.From the British Isles English spread all over the world. Nowadays English is the language of progressive science and technology, trade cultural relations, commerce and business. English is called the language of the sky and the sea. Every pilot and ship’s captain must speak English to communicate with each other. Most vocabulary in the modern computer science is in English.English is the language of politicians. English along with French and German is spoken at their summit meetings. 75% of all international business letters are written in English. English is a language of rock and pop music.US and British companies produce thousands of films, videos and TV programmes every year. Nowadays English is the most fashionable language in the world. English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist.
