“What is Christmas?”Christmas Day, December 25, is

probably the most popular holiday

in Great Britain. It is a family holiday.

Traditionally all relatives and friends

give each other presents. They

decorate their houses in the

traditional way that is the Christmas

trees are set up in houses, in the

streets and churches. The Christmas

trees are always decorated with fairy

lights, angels and small toys. In

addition little packets with nuts,

candies and special biscuits are hung

on the tree. Presents are put under

the Christmas tree.

“Santa Claus”Santa Claus got his name

from a man known as St.Nickolas who lived in

Asia in the fourth century. He gave his

wealth to the poor and often to children. After

he died the Dutch brought this legend to colonial America. Soon

the Dutch name became Santa Claus.

“A Christmas Carol”Carol singing is an essential part of

Christmas. Carols may be traditional or

by known composers they can express

different feelings. Usually children come

around in the evening to the front doors

and start singing carols and the people

living in these houses give children

candies, nuts, pies and so on, to thank

them for carol singing. Today we shall

present such famous Christmas carols

as “Ring the bells”, “We wish you a

merry Christmas” and others.

“Christmas Lunch”A typical Christmas lunch

includes turkey with cranberry sauce and

pudding. Every young woman in each house cook a special Christmas dinner. Usually a coin or two are hidden inside the pudding and part of the fun is to

see who finds it. After the lunch they go to the sitting

room to listen to the Christmas speech of the Queen, shown on TV or sing Christmas carols.

History of Christmas FestivalChristmas is the main public holiday in Britain.

This Christian Holy day is held on the 25th of December in

honor of the birth of Jesus Christ.

People usually spend time with their families. They

often see it as a time of merry-making and present –

giving, wishing each other a merry Christmas and

happy new year. On Christmas Eve some people go to a

special church service called Midnight Mass at 12

o’clock at night.

Christmas TreePeople put presents under Christmas

trees decorated with coloured balls,

fairy lights, tinsel and baubles. The

Christmas Tree became popular in

England in 1841 when Queen Victoria's

husband Prince Albert brought a

Christmas tree from his native Germany

and put it Windsor Castle . Every year

people of Norway send a Christmas Tree

to London. It stands in Trafalgar Square,

in front of the National Gallery and is

beautifully decorated.

Christmas dinnerThe traditional meal consists

of turkey served with potatoes and vegetables. This is usually followed by Christmas pudding.

If the pudding is made at home, Some people like to hide

a coin in the Christmas pudding and make a wish, whoever gets the piece of pudding with the coin in on Christmas day is especially

lucky and their "pudding wish" will come true! Other

traditional food include mince pies and Christmas cake.
