In the United States, "theSixties", as they are known inpopular culture, is a term used byhistorians, journalists, and otherobjective academics; in somecases nostalgically to describe thecounterculture and socialrevolution near the end of thedecade; and pejoratively todescribe the era as one ofirresponsible excess andflamboyance. Other sub-genres ofrock, particularly glam, hardrock, progressive, art rock, andheavy metal achieved variousamounts of success. AliceCooper, Deep Purple, LedZeppelin, TheWho, Nazareth, AC/DC, BlackSabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, and Kisswere highly popular by the mid1970s.
