+Purpose of presentation
Students will understand 21st Century Skills, and Federal, State of Colorado and Eagle County School District learning standards so that students may identify with, discuss, and apply such expectations to their individual learning goals.
+What are 21st Century Skills?
Students must learn the essential skills for success in today’s world, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration.
+Twenty-First Century Student Outcomes
The elements described in this section as “21st century student outcomes” (represented by the rainbow) are the skills, knowledge and expertise students should master to succeed in work and life in the 21st century. (see website)

Core Subjects and 21st Century Themes Mastery of core subjects and 21st century themes is essential for students in the 21st century. Core subjects include: English, reading or language arts

In addition to these subjects, we believe schools must move beyond a focus on basic competency in core subjects to promoting understanding of academic content at much higher levels by weaving 21st century interdisciplinary themes into core subjects:

+What is curriculum?
Curriculum represents what should be taught. It is an explicit (very specific ) and comprehensive (all inclusive) plan that is based on content and process standards.
+What are standards?
Standards are the skills and knowledge base expected of students for a particular subject area at a particular grade level.
+What are essential learnings?
Essential Learnings are the backbone of a guaranteed and viable (very successful) curriculum.
Aligned with standards, these focus on skills, content, concepts students are expected to learn so that they will be prepared for the next year of education.
+What is Depth of Knowledge?
Depth of Knowledge is how much you learn in all content areas.
Recall, Level 1: Requires recall of information, such as a fact, definition, term, or performance of a simple process or procedure.
Skills & Concepts, Level 2: Requires students to make decisions on how to approach a question or problem.
Strategic Thinking, Level 3: Requires students to explain, generalize or connect ideas.
Extended Thinking, Level 4: Requires complex reasoning, planning, developing and thinking over an extended period of time, e.g., developing a hypothesis or performing complex analyses.

Outcome – what the student is expected to learn and demonstrate

Alignment means putting items in the right order to make them work most efficiently e.g. alignment of spine
Therefore, alignment of curriculum means everything you learn one year is to prepare you for the following year.
