The Most Promising Application Idea

The Most Promising EGNOS Application Idea

WHAT ?acoustic binaural + GNSS =

guidance people among the pre-defined track

FOR WHOM?blind, partially sighted

people, people working in environments with low

visibility

HOW ?spatial paths could be

represented as a sequence of acoustic cues

Technical description

The sequence of the bell rings allows any person to build a mental map of the path.

Although the sound is the same it is perceived in a different way depending on the distance and orientation

Absolute positioning

Relative positioning

Considering position and orientation of the user the next track points are converted into binaural acoustic cues allowing the user to perceive the position and shape of the track.

The track can be considered as a route compound by a discrete set of geo-referenced waypoints. GNSS is used to calculate user position.

A spatial path can be represented as a sequence of acoustic cues

Technical description

Visual impaired people require guidance support in outdoor activities.

Emergency & Rescue teams require guidance assistance in no visibility conditions

Neither research, patents nor products have solved the problem of giving a non- visual track perception.

Technical description

Track perception would allow blind people to imagine the geometry of he path and walk along it autonomously.

Binaural sounds create the illusion that sounds produced by a stereo headphone emanate from specific directions and distances.

The sequence of the bell rings allows any person to build a mental map of the path.
