What Happened to iCluster SMB?

• iCluster SMB (5733-ICS)– Introduced in 2007 to address small

and medium business market– Also addressed commoditization of HA

marketplace– Limited to 3 replication groups– Very low pricing

• Challenges:– Lengthened sales cycle due to pre-

qualification– Partners wanted to lead with SMB due

to price point– Customers wanted full functionality of

iCluster at SMB price

– Not aligned with PowerHA

Building Blocks: IBM i Clustering Architecture

Yep! Are you still running?

ProgramRun in case of failure

What does Clustering Do?• Cluster management• Cluster Administrative Domain functions• Heart beating• Facilitates switchovers & failovers • Enables automated application restart and

cluster-enabled applications

What is Clustering?• Defines partitions and applications into

Nodes and Resources Groups (CRG)

• Creates “awareness” of one another for switchover and failover purposes

What does it Look Like? Auto-configuration

• Why should the customer have to configure the product?• One command creates nodes, journals, sets product values, and creates replication groups and specifiers!• Done in 3 minutes!

Autonomics

• Integrity and readiness of backup via sync checks:

– Dataarea contents– IFS and physical file attributes– Object existence – Physical file contents via hash– Always active sync check

• Reduced administration

– Automatic re-sync of suspended objects

• Increased awareness of HA status:– EMAIL sent for suspended objects and

errors– Alarms and alerts when latency

thresholds exceeded – Monitor indication of refreshes, reorgs,

access path rebuilds files/members

iCluster for i 5.2 Enhancements • Complete integration with IBM i

– iCluster is now installed as a licensed program with licensing by standard IBM i license keys– fixes will be delivered as PTFs– one-stop for Support, with PMRs and APARs to track issues across both iCluster and IBM i.

• Usability– consolidation of multiple sync check types into easy-to-use groupings– consolidated, simplified reports– continuous Sync Check option which always runs as part of mirroring– checking attributes of non-journaled objects– better integration between Sync Check status and auto-recovery (suspension) status.

• Remote journaling performance and recoverability– faster startup when starting from manually set initialization points (set position, mark position).– enhanced recovery option for source system failure – force journal scrape

• Integrated clustering support– ability to configure and interoperate iCluster in pre-existing cluster configurations– easier control of recovery domain upon node failure.

Adding License Keys

• Purchase licenses for every node on iCluster, except in LPAR Box

• Licenses are issued on a machine class basis

• If sent as a file, use ADDLICKEY and prompt PF4 to specify *LICKEYFILE

NOTE: Key specified here is a sample only – use keys specific to your HW

Upgrading from Previous Versions

• Save current iCluster product library DMCLUSTER into a savefile

• Install iCluster 5.2 into ICLUSTER product library

• DMIBMUPGR – mirroring starts from last apply position
