In this past August, a group of junior students from Bangmod Wittaya School won the NFL flag Football World Championship in China. Flag football is a version of American football, but a lot simpler. Instead of tackling players to the ground to stop play, the team on defence must pull one of the two flags hanging on each side of the waist of the player who has the ball.

In 2001, coach, Ms.Chanpen Nitiyanan and her team started learning about the sport. When they started out, they knew nothing at all about flag football or even American football. But with hard work, strick discipline and unwavering unity, they’ve made unbelievable progress at the World Championships. They finished seventh in Mexico in 2002 and seventh in Canada in 2004 before taking first place this year.
This year also marks the first time an Asian team has won the title. Even more impressive, in the final game, the Thai players won a thrilling 25 -19 victory over the Americans – a team that has American football running through its veins.
“ Nobody expected us to win. They thought we were just newcomers with no potential.” Chanpen said.“ However, our abilities eventually captured the media’s attention. Even the American team sent scouts to spy out how we played.”
The coach and her team worked hard. A month before the big competition in China, the Thai team stayed each night at school for training. “Our path wasn’t paved with roses. We faced lots of difficulties”,Chanpen said. “ Our school field had no floodlights, so we had to practice inside the building at night. That was dangerous because the floor is concrete. Luckily, There were no accidents.”
Behind the success of Bangmod Wittaya School is a training team from NFL Flag Football. It taught Thai team about tactics and game analysis. In addition to the technical assistance, Buddhist meditation played a significant role in their accomplishment. After each day’s practice, Chanpen had her athletes meditate for 30 minutes. เบองหลงความสำาเรจของโรงเรยนบางมดวทยา คอการฝกซอมทมจาก

According to 14–year–old center Suppanut, it was a really big help. “Meditation was very useful. It helped us to stay calm in critical situations during the games, especially when we were tie 19-19 with the American team in the final” he said. “The American players panicked” 14-year-boy quarterback Rachaphan recalled.“They couldn’t control their nerves. We might have had the same level of ability, but with better spirits, we eventually beat them.” (ADAPTED FROM STUDENT WEEKLY , NOVEMBER 14, 2005)
