Your pro bono data innovation team
Advancing your mission is like driving a car. You wouldn’t use your rearview mirror to avoid upcoming obstacles or a paper map to handle changing traffic conditions.
Unfortunately, that’s exactly how most organizations currently use data.
They look at reports and counts from the past to inform their future strategy,
driving forward by looking backwards.
Descriptive insights help measure your past and current activity.
Predictive insights help anticipate future needs or behaviors.
Prescriptive insights help save time by suggesting next steps.
DataKind can help you use advanced data analytics to uncover not only descriptive but predictive and prescriptive insights to improve your organization’s decision making and maximize your impact.
See what’s possible
Crisis Text Line, a 24/7 text line for people in crisis, needed a quick way to identify “repeat texters,” which often slow down caregiving efforts to critical cases. A DataKind volunteer built a model that helps counselors identify repeat texters much earlier on, saving them so much time that the organization will be able to serve over 100,000 more people in 2016.
Analyzing Text Messages to Reach People in Crisis
Finding Children in Need of Hospice Care Shooting Star Chase, a UK-based children’s hospice, knew 30,000 children in the UK were in need of hospice care but didn’t know how to find them. DataKind volunteers mapped public data to locate children suffering from life-limiting diseases by streamlining referral paths. This ultimately saved nearly 90,000 pounds for children’s hospices around the country.
Predicting and Preventing Human Rights Abuses
Through its Urgent Action Network, Amnesty International rallies individuals to prevent human rights violations around the world. However, they needed a way to prioritize and focus the Network’s efforts to take action on the most urgent threats. DataKind volunteers used 25 years worth of Amnesty International's human rights data to create a model that predicts which threats are most likely to escalate so the organization can target the most critical cases.
We’ve delivered more than $5 million in pro bono data consulting to social change organizations around the world.
We partner with visionary social change organizations that... are mission driven - nonprofits, charities, social enterprises, foundations and government agencies
have a clear Theory of Change and understand how their work leads to real-world impact
work in one of our key issue areas - education, poverty, health, human rights, the environment and cities
have digital data, unexplored datasets or want help finding data to inform their work
have leaders committed to using data to make decisions and learn hard truths, not just to report on their past work
Meet Our Partner Organizations
"Thanks to our work with DataKind, we are now able to more quickly route repeat texters to the long-term care they need, saving our Crisis Counselors time to focus on crisis cases that need immediate response. By identifying repeat texters faster, in concert with our team rolling out products and policies that support repeat texters, we're able to scale our impact - potentially serving 26,000 more people in 2015 than before.”
“This is the best experience I have ever had working with a group of expert volunteers. Our team’s clarity of purpose and diversity of expertise is exactly what we needed to uncover the hidden gems in our data to better serve our students.”
