Audacity!

First Things First

If someone told you about a free audio editing program, what steps would you take:

• to find more information, and

• obtain a copy of the program?

“Beta” software is a program not yet fully tested and officially released. If there is a “stable” version available, always download that.

FYI: Most Google Software is considered “Beta”

Intel-Based Macs. Your laptops are OS X, PPC (above)

iMacs are OS 8 (will not work)

Internet Explorer Users Alert!

Click the bar along the top and select “Download File…”

That’s so LAMEWindows: you will get the LAME Download page, select any from the list

Step 7

One more LAME tip

• Double-click the “lame-3.96.1” file

• Drag the file lame_enc.dll onto the Desktop

How to Work with

Sound Files

Recording Sound

Make sure Micophone is

selected, and the volume is not low or

too high

Record Button will start Recording

and make a new track automatically

Record:“I, um, like Saturday Sessions”

As you speak you can see your waveform.

Edit:Taking out the ‘UM’

1. Replay the Audio

2. Visually Spot the ‘um’

3. Highlight the area and DELETE it

4. Click the SKIP TO START button

5. Click PLAY and hear it now!

Saving the Project

• Audacity saves its file as a project.

• Always use “Save … As” feature when you first save (for any application – Word, Excel, PP)

• A project is not an audio file and cannot be played without Audacity!

• A project saves the tracks so you can edit later.

Create a New Folder on the Desktop and Save

• Click the Desktop

• Create New Folder icon

• Call the folder “Audio Projects”

• Type a Filename

• Save

Save as an audio file

• Audacity, by itself, can not save a file as MP3

• Click “File > Export as MP3”

• Audacity will ask where your LAME MP3 converter is located

• Browse to Desktop, and select the LAME encoder “lame_enc.dll”
