The assassination on 28 June 1914 of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria is the cause of the start of this war.
The first World war was the first general world in Europe for 100 years. They fought with the new weapons and explosives of modern industry.
Over 15 million people died in the war. Germany was in chaos. France was not much better. The allies were deep in debt, mainly to the USA.
By the war's end, four major imperial powers the German, Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires had been militarily and politically ended and the last two, disappeared.
• In the East, the Russian army was in war against the Austro-Hungarian forces but were forced back by the German army.
• The conflict opened with the German invasion of Belgium, Luxembourg and France.
• The Austro-Hungarian invasion of Serbia and a Russian attack against Prussia.
Before World War II, the war was also known as The Great War, The World War, The War to End All Wars, The Kaiser's War, The War of the Nations, The War in Europe, and "The European War“. World War I ends in 1918.
