Theme For World Health Day 2010

Urbanization is a challenge for public health in relation to water, environment, violence and diseases.

Virtually all population growth over the next 30 years will be in urban areas.

The major determinants of health in urban settings are beyond the health sector, including physical infrastructure, access to social and health services, local government and the distribution of income and educational opportunities.

The urban poor suffer disproportionately from a wide range of diseases and other health problems and include an increased risk for violence, chronic disease and for some communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

The campaign

With the campaign events are organised worldwide during the week of 7-11 April 2010.

1000 cities; To open up public spaces to health whether it be activities in parks, town hall meetings, clean-up campaigns, or closing off portions of streets to motorized vehicles.

1000 lives; To collect 1000 stories of urban health champions who have taken action and had a significant impact on health in their cities.

Over the next 25 years, the urban population in Pakistan is likely to increase by 140%

In 2030, the urban population in Pakistan will constitute 50% of the total population of Pakistan.

A natural by-product of urbanization will be the emergence of a middle class of over a 100 million individuals, who will not only create a skilled workforce that can become the engine of growth and source of innovation.

The Health Profile Of Pakistan

Infant mortality rate is 77 per 1000 live births. Under-5 Mortality Rate is 103 per 1000 children. Maternal mortality rate is 350 per 100,000 live

births. 25% of babies are born with low birth weight. Over 35% of children Under-5 are short for their age. Over 10% are underweight for their height. Half are anemic. The major cause of mortality is;a. Malnutritionb. Acute Respiratory Illnessc. Diarrhea

The solutions do not mean simply over-powering oneself with lots of money, only the COMMITMENT LEVEL to rise above and do some quality work would do the wonders, we’ve been waiting for the past 62 years !!
