Examplesofinstructionalmaterialsfor“before”,“during”,and“after”classmeetingsusinganinquiryorientedinstructionalstrategy(theLearningCycleApproach)willbepresentedduringthisworkshop.Theactivitiesforbefore,during,andafteraparticularclassmeetingarelinkedtogetherandaddressspecificlearningobjectivesforthecourse.TheBeforeClassExploration(BCE)isaweb‐basedexercisethatstudentsdobeforetheyattendalecture.Itwillusuallyconsistofadatacollectionactivityusingasimulationprogramalongwithafewquestionsaboutthedata.Theactivitywillrunthroughawebbrowserandshouldrequireonly10to15minutesofastudent’stimetocomplete.UponsubmissionoftheBCE,studentsreceiveacopyoftheirresponsesand,whenappropriate,anexpert’sresponsetothesame
questionsforcomparison.TheinstructorcanaccessallstudentresponsestotheBCEpriortolecturetogainabetterpictureofthestudent’spre‐existingknowledge.TheDuringClassInvention(DCI)willusedatageneratedintheBCEandalongwithquestions/problemsdevelopaconceptthatfocusesonacourselearningobjective.TheDCIisdesignedtobecompletedbysmallcooperativegroupstoallowforsomeself‐instruction.Studentscanreporttheirconsensusresponsefortheinstructor’sconsiderationusingastudentresponsesystemand/orbyturninginawrittenresponse.TheAfterClassApplication(ACA)isaweb‐basedsetofquestionsthatwillallowstudentstoapplytheirknowledgeoftheconceptintroducedbytheBCEand‘invented’bytheDCI.ThequestionsontheACAwillbebothconceptualandalgorithmic.

ThepurposeofthisworkshopistointroducetheparticipantstotheprocessofdevelopingideasforChemicalEducationResearchprojectsintoviableresearchquestionsthatcorrespondtoboththeoriginalideaandthedatathatcanbecollectedtoaddressthequestion.Participantsareurgedtobringresearchideaswiththem.Theformatoftheworkshopwillincludeworkinginsmallgroupstohelpdefineandoperationalizetheresearchquestions.Oncetheresearchquestionshavebeendiscussedandrevised,plansforconductingthestudieswillbeconstructed,discussed,critiquedandrevised.Smallgroupdiscussionswillbeusedtohelpparticipantsdeterminewhetherthedatatheyareproposingtocollectaddressestheresearchquestion.Attentionwillalsobepaidtohowthedatashouldbeanalyzed.

Interestedintransformingyourcoursetobemoreinteractive?Lookingtoincreasethepooloftalentedsciencestudentswhogointoteaching?TheColoradoLearningAssistantModelcanhelp.LearningAssistants(LAs)aretalentedundergraduatestudentshiredtohelptransformcoursestobecollaborative,student‐centered,andinteractive.Meanwhile,LAsmakeupthepoolfromwhichK‐12teachersarerecruited.Since2003,694LApositionshavebeenfilledin9departments,andapproximately35courseshavebeentransformedatCU‐Boulder.LA‐supportedcoursesshowincreasedstudentlearning,and12%ofLAshavebeenrecruitedtoK‐12teachingcareers,triplingthenumberofchemistrymajorsenrollinginteachercertificationprograms.Inthisworkshop,wewillintroducetheColoradoLearningAssistantModel,discussimplementationissues,andprovidematerialstoassistfacultyinestablishinganLAprogram.Ifyou’realreadyusingapproachessuchasPOGILorPLTL,couplingthoseeffortswithanLAprogramcanhelptoachieveadditionalgoalsofrecruitingstudentsintoteachingandfosteringcollaborationamongfacultyfromchemistry,education,andotherSTEMdisciplines.
