Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Samma Sambuddhasa

Homage to Him, The Blessed One, The Worthy One,The Fully Enlightened One

3

If you fear pain, if you dislike pain, don't do an

evil deed in open or secret. If you're doing or will do an evil deed, you won't escape pain: it will catch you even as you

run away.

4

Speak not harshly to anyone, for those thus spoken to might retort. Indeed, angry speech hurts, and retaliation

may overtake you.

5

Irrigators regulate the rivers; fletchers

straighten the arrow shaft;

carpenters shape the wood; the wise

control themselves.

6

Well done is that action of doing which one repents not later, and the fruit of which, one reaps with

delight and happiness.

7

By effort and heedfulness, discipline and self-mastery ,let the wise one make for oneself an island

which no flood can overwhelm.

8

Ever grows the glory of one who is energetic, mindful and pure in conduct, discerning and self-controlled, righteous

and heedful.

9

The evil-doer grieves here and hereafter; one grieves in both the

worlds. One laments and is afflicted, recollecting one's own impure deeds.

10

They do not lament over the past, they

yearn not for what is to come, they

maintain themselves in the present, thus their complexion is

serene.

11

Good is virtue until life's end, good is faith that is steadfast,

good is the acquisition of wisdom, and good is the

avoidance of evil.

12

If for company you find a wise and prudent friend who leads a good life, you should, overcoming all impediments, keep their

company joyously and mindfully.

13

To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to purify one's

mind - this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

14

Though one may conquer a thousand

times a thousand people in battle, yet

one indeed is the noblest victor who conquers oneself.

15

Calm is one's thought, calm one's speech, and calm one's deed, who, truly knowing, is

wholly freed, perfectly tranquil and wise.

16

One by one, little by little, moment by moment , a wise one should remove one's own impurities, as a smith removes dross

from silver.

17

Of all the fragrances --sandal, tagara, blue lotus and

jasmine --the fragrance of virtue is the sweetest.

18

Arise! Do not be heedless! Lead a righteous life. The righteous live happily

both in this world and the next.
