+ PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Woodside North Rankin A Reliability Upgrade Project (A $8 million)

in the North West Shelf, Western Australian included a 3 Phase upgrade

of the site that took place between 1991-93. The Upgrade aimed to

elevate the safeguarding and control integrity of the platform and improve

the security of supply to the WA domestic gas market. For this project

Worley Parsons and Exerne formed the joint owned I&E Systems Pty Ltd,

a specialist EPCM contractor in the engineering of integrated software-

based instrumentation systems.

+ OUR SERVICES

On an EPCM basis, I&E Systems upgraded the existing instrumentation

and electrical system without compromising the platform’s operating and

technical integrity. This included

< Upgrade of emergency generator controls.

< Replacement of critical functions digital process measurement

instruments with analog transmitters.

< Upgrade of the platform safeguarding system .

< Migration of systems whilst the platform maintained full production.

+ THE RESULTS

The total project was performed with minimal impact on normal

production by maximising “live” cutover strategies and taking advantage

of schedule maintenance shutdowns.

Replacement of the safeguarding system with Triconex PLC’s. Upgraded

the DCS to Honeywell LCN.

Installation of new vital power UPS’s and distribution systems,

Revamp of hot oil heater instrumentation.

Signifi cant increase in facilities reliability and maintainability.

The project was of world-class signifi cance for scale and complexity and

received an Engineering Excellence Award for Project Management in

1994.

+ OUTCOMES

The project was a huge success for both I&E Systems and Woodside

Energy Ltd. The working relationship between these two companies

continues to fl ourish to this day.
