WMBC Whatcom Falls Pump Track Proposal

Eric Brown - Trail Director, Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition

Objectives:

• The WMBC proposes to construct a bicycle pump track in Whatcom Falls Park.

• We are asking the Parks Board to recommend an amendment to the Whatcom Falls Master Plan to allow for the pump track construction.

Benefits: • Pump tracks are fun for riders of all ages and

abilities. Whatcom Falls Park is a great location with easy access from 4 neighborhoods.

• Bikers on their way to/from Galbraith Mountain will be able to utilize the pump track.

• Families ride bikes in the park, making the use consistent with the park today.

Whatcom Falls site:

• Ideal pump track location. • Flat topography with plenty of light. • Big shade trees. • Easily accessed by small children and parents. • Good safety with clear sight-lines. • Location is used very sparingly by park goers.

What are pump tracks? • Manmade closed circuits with rollers in

between and berms at each end. • Designed to be ridden without pedaling. • A full-body workout, riders use their body to

pump—or push down into the dip after an elevation and pull up before the crest of a mound—throughout the continuous loop.

How does the bike move forward?

• By absorbing and compressing your bike over rollers, you convert gravitational force and downward thrust into speed.

• Today, pump tracks can be found in parks worldwide and a well-built pump track can be enjoyed by all levels of riders.
