When we think about technology-enhanced learning in schools, many of us think that we drive in a bus like this …

3

But, most likely our bus looks more like this … „Come on and

Moodle | DotLRN | … with me!“

4

What brings us from here …

… to there?(*) Research

=> Critical Thinking, Ambition for Improvement,

Methodology

(*) Infrastructure, e.g. Content, Supplies,

Hardware, Support, Structural Capital

5

Methodology: Action Research

1. Design a Content Broker

2. Involve users early up-front

3. Prototype

4. Reflect current implementations

5. Implement & Improve

Lindgren, R., Henfridsson, O., and Schultze, U. "Design Principles for Competence Management Systems: A Synthesis of an Action Research Study," MIS Quarterly (28:3) 2004, pp 435-472.

6

New DotLRN Component: Share!

Mediator Component for the exchange of learning resources

Configurable Metadata Model: LOM, Dublin Core

Configureable License Management

Interfaces: SQI, OAI-PMH, Web Services, HTTP Post

Open Source based Software Framework OpenACS / DotLRN

Future: Social Software Features

7

Bildungspool with 2007-10-05:

35.000 Learning Resources Online

Interoperable Systems:- AEIOU- Institut für Realienkunde- Bildungsserver Burgenland- EUN Learning Resource Exchange

Soon to come:- Bitmedia SBX- Mediathek

Preliminary finding: Balanced Metadata

Model for Learning Resource

Descriptions Simon, B., et al. 2007.

9

Our Recipe

1. Starting points: LOM application profile of EducaNext LOM application profile of Bildungspool (Generation 1)

2. Design use case

3. Include elements required for use case

4. Exclude elements not required for use case

5. Exclude elements not used by users

6. Include elements required for interoperability

(e.g. EUN LRE LOM Application Profile)

Preliminary Finding: Users Want Their

‘Home System’ Connected

A Content Broker should not necessarily become an extra tool teachers need to register with

Instead: Connect their ‚Home System‘

Preliminary finding: Support Collaboration!

No Need for Rights Management

Not needed in that form! Not needed in that form!

Simon, B., et al. 2007.

17

„Rights Management for Open Content“ =

Open Content License + Usage Tracking

Providers don’t care where their material goes, but would like to know who is using it

Tracking is required in order to: report on the effectiveness of the brokerage

infrastructure potential investigation of the correct application

of the open content license attached to the material

providing a first contact point for future collaboration
