Winstead’s Got Talent
On Wednesday, August 28, you’ll have a chance to see and/or participate in
Winstead’s Got Talent.
The evening will begin with a covered dish dinner at 6:00 pm followed by the
talent show at 7:00 pm. This is a talent show, not a contest. Donations will be ac-
cepted and will benefit the choir.
Do you have talent you would like to share? Contact Kathy Creech with your
talent. They are looking for anything - singing, dancing, reading a story, telling
jokes, etc.
Invite your friends and neighbors and we’ll see you there.

2 The Winstead Connection
Pastor’s Message project.” (Winstead United Methodist Church History, 1948-1993, p. 3)
Winstead Methodist Church was not
born as a building. Winstead was born as
a persistent, prayerful response to Je-
sus’ call to reach out to the surrounding
community with God’s love.
And it did not spring fully-formed from
a comprehensive building plan, where all
of the details of the building were final-
ized and settled. It began with Miss Zell
Winstead’s faith that even though there
was no church building yet, and no prom-
ise of when there might be one, it was
time to give her own money to buy hym-
nals.
This is the faith that has guided us
through the years -- through the con-
struction of a small one-room multipur-
pose building with folding doors that di-
vided the room up for Sunday School, and
four years later a sanctuary, and still lat-
er a Sunday School wing, and finally the
completion of our current sanctuary in
1986.
Each step involved careful and re-
sponsible stewardship of resources. And
each step also involved a leap of faith,
grounded in prayer and trust in the gen-
erous spirit of current members, and
trust that God would bless our faithful
response to His love with new members.
As we begin our move to Airport
Boulevard, let us remember and continue
to build on this glorious history. Like
those original ten Methodists who met at
Mr. and Mrs. Baker’s house, let us turn to
God in prayer for inspiration and guid-
ance on every step of our plan. And let us
turn to God in prayer with every uncer-
tainty that requires a leap of faith.
(Continued on page 5)
I can feel excitement and enthusiasm,
along with a little anxiety, as we move
toward finalizing the sale of our current
church facility, and develop plans for our
new church building. This is understand-
able. Change -- even change that we
have hoped and prayed for for so long --
is both exciting and a little scary.
As I have prayed and sought God’s
word in scripture through this process, I
have been drawn to Jesus’ words in Mat-
thew 24: 1-2. “As Jesus came out of the
temple and was going away, his disciples
came to point out to him the buildings of
the temple. Then he asked them, ‘You see
all these, do you not? Truly I tell you, not
one stone will be left here upon another;
all will be thrown down.’”
Contrary to what some who heard
these words thought, Jesus is not threat-
ening to vandalize the church. Rather, he
is reminding us of what built the church in
the first place, and what the church is
called to be. The church is certainly not
the building materials, which, like all ma-
terial possessions, will one day return to
dust.
The church is our faithful response to
God’s eternal love and grace, and His
commission to us, to be the living and
resurrected body of Christ in the world.
There are folks in our congregation
who remember Winstead’s birth, when “...
a group of ten interested persons met in
the home of Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Baker for a
prayer service. It was at this meeting that
Miss Zell Winstead gave fifty dollars
which was used to purchase twenty-five
Cokesbury Worship Hymnals and other
incidentals. These cottage prayer ser-
vices continued and as the weeks passed
more persons became interested in the

Sunday School Promotion Sunday
It's hard to believe but the summer is
just about to be over and it will be time
for Sunday School Promotion Sunday..
We will have promotion during the
11:00 worship service on Sunday, Au-
gust 18. We will use our children's time
as an opportunity to promote Sunday
School and to promote those moving up
in Children and Youth Sunday School.
This is a special time for our children
and young people as well as our adults.
Please come and show your support of
our children and youth!
Blessing of the Backpacks
We invite all students, educators and
those who help with our school system
to come and be a part of the Blessing of
the Backpacks. This is our annual event
to start off the new school year on Sun-
day, August 25.
All of our youth, children and educa-
tors will process and place their back-
packs on the altar rail.
During the service we will not only
bless the backpacks but pray for our
children, youth, and all of those in-
volved in our children. We know it takes
a whole village of disciple mentors to
raise a young person in the way he or
she should grow in the Lord!
If you have any questions, please
feel free to check with Marty Johnson,
Ann Baker or Mandy Jenkins.
Pray for Me Campaign
We are looking to provide opportuni-
ties for the adults of our church to pray
for our students through the school
year.
We are looking at the possibility of
using the Pray for Me Campaign as our
program for praying for each of our
students as they go through the school
year. We will provide you with seven
essential areas to pray for our young
people and we would like to get at least
two different generations of adults. We
plan to begin on Sunday, September 8.
Please be praying and keep your ears
open as we will be talking about this at
upcoming Sunday morning services.
What a great opportunity this would
give you to pray over our children and
youth students. This will be a great way
for you to grow your faith as well as be
an important person in the spiritual life
of our children and youth!
If you would like more information ,
please contact Marty Johnson.

After a summer break, Women of Win-
stead (WOW) will resume meetings for
the fall, starting in August. WOW will
meet on Saturday,
August 17 at the
church at 10:00 am in
the choir room. Ann
Baker and Mary Smith

sions to make for the

church and community mission. WE EN-
COURAGE ALL WOMEN OF THE CHURCH
TO ATTEND AND HELP PLAN THE WOW
ACTIVITIES FOR THE FALL.
Radical Hospitality Awareness
by Sanda Hight
Radical hospitality is an on-going op-
portunity for our congregation. During
our present time of transition, opportuni-
ties for showing hospitality abound as we
share our space and meet our brothers
and sisters in Christ who are near us. Let
us make a strong effort to call our neigh-
bors by name and greet them with love
and joy during the coming months. We
are all children of God. We need to con-
tinue to extend hospitality to our own
congregation and visitors as well each
time our doors are open for worship and
other gatherings.
I Peter 4:9 "Offer hospitality to one
another without grumbling." Church History
By Sanda Hight
During our transition period, some
members of our congregation might run
across documents or items that need to
be saved in our church history. If you see
pictures, scrapbooks, documents or oth-
er items that you think need to be saved,
please get them to the church historian,
Sanda Hight. We will try to find a place to
store them so that our church history
may be preserved.
Sunday School Picnic
By Pastor George
The Winstead Church Picnic, spon-
sored by our Sunday School program, is
Sunday, August 25 at Rotary Club Park.
Games and socializing begin at 3 p.m.,
with dinner to follow around 5 p.m.
Please sign up to bring a dish on the sig-
nup sheet in the narthex.
And especially, let us keep Jesus’ message firmly in our hearts and minds, that God’s
church is not a building, but the body of Christ that lives and moves through us as Holy
Spirit.

Missing in Action
By Sanda Hight
After cleaning out one of the storage
rooms in Hood Hall, we discovered that a
number of the green tablecloths used for
church dinners and receptions were not
in the storage cabinet with the white,
beige, and yellow cloths. The green ta-
blecloths are frequently needed to cover
tables for church functions. If you have
taken some of them home to launder af-
ter a church function, please call Sanda
Hight and let her know that you have
them. The tablecloths are being stored
and are available for whenever we need
to prepare a meal.
Also, two boxes of used children's
books have been left at church. If the
books belong to you and you need them
back, please call Sanda Hight. Otherwise
the books will be stored and taken to our
new church building to be used in the
nursery. Thanks.

ties for Hand in Hand.

begin on Wednesday, September 4. If
you’d like to make beautiful music while
having a fun time with great people, let
